Well let's see if Nunroyd Park can tempt you. The big seller of this beauty for me is the pond. Now I'm not a big fisher (or angler as I know people can get shirty about the difference!?!) but if I were then I'd spend my Sunday mornings here. Just pick up a pass and you're away. For me, I don't need to wait for a fish to get caught on the end of a sharp thing and I'm happy to have a good old meander around. And there is plenty of open grass for me to do that. The beck is nice too and worth a look at. There are also plenty of sports pitches for those who so wish and a skateboard park. Dude, I should really get into this skating lark, it looks rad and like totally awesome. Errmm on second thoughts...

It great for bird watchers and there's a few hides around the reserve. It's also just nice for a walk around and there's a visitors centre where you can get a cup of tea. You can become a friend of the nature reserve for about £7 for the year and then you are invited to special events just at bat walks.

Gotts park is actually used as a golf course, but is perfect for a stroll, flying balls permitting!…read more I always access Gotts Park by crossing the canal coming from Kirkstall Road via the slightly creepy area with the transformer station. After the bridge over the canal there is a really pretty path up through the trees, which create a kind of tunnel. Turning off to the right at the top of the path you reach a gentle hill up toward the mansion, a grade two listed building that seems to watch over the park with its large windowey eyes...or is that just me? Before you reach the mansion's lawn there is a towering dead-looking tree that has a dramatic weather-beaten look, somehow reflecting the sense of history evoked by the grand, imposing mansion behind. Following a path along the side of the mansion leads you to the extremely popular 'spoon', probably the best grassy sledging hill in Leeds, with an amazing view of the city. During our week of snow I doubt there was a moment when there wasn't someone hurtling down it at great speed. When I joined in the fun there was a bunch of snow boarders who seemed to be enjoying the ride. I have yet to explore the entire park, but its combination of perfect slopes and brilliant views gets my vote!

Close to many residential areas so you don't need a car to get to it and open to all it is a far cry from the immaculate greens of private clubs but that's why I felt comfortable (let alone felt like I could afford it) the topography will pride you with a mini-work out and challenging holes. It's got a pretty nice hazy view at this time of year too, try and get there in the afternoon for best light of the surrounding area this may not be the optimum time for a round.

Car parking isn't too bad, although on the day we went (admittedly during half-term) we were lucky to find a space. There was also a slight lack of signage -- since this was our first visit, we could have done with more maps around. Some of the maps we found seemed to be Emergency Maps designed to show where the nearest life-belt was rather than anything more substantive about the place. That said, it is an excellent place for some fresh air -- highly recommended.

I love visiting in the winter when the water is frozen over and the ground is covered in snow. It's beautiful! Just a note: as I am local to the area on my last visit I noticed a fair bit if litter not exactly at the tarn but the surrounding areas.. If we all club together and bin our rubbish or even pick other peoples up and dispose if it we can all help keep this place looking nice for others :-)

First of all, they are metal and have no seats. But to be honest, they'd be in pieces if they were porcelain XD. There is graffiti all over the walls. Kids will love playing in the surrounding woodland and feeding the ducks in the dam, and at least two of the walks are wheelchair friendly, as we used to take my brother there in his. It's easy to get to and a nice afternoon out (especially as there are an ice cream van and plenty of pubs nearby!) I'm not sure how much the car park costs, but there are buses from Wakefield town centre and obviously, the walk is free!

We have water and plenty of it. We've also got electricty and phone lines outside of London too. I know, it's surprising. What I'm talking about is "real" water and what better place to go than Eccup Reservoir. It's a pearler of an area for some real clarity and fresh air. Beautiful walks ahoy then sailor and more natural splendor than you can shake a stick at. They've also invested heavily in preserving the glourious Red Kites and it is now home to over 100 of the bad boys. Great to see them in full flight. So twitchers can have a field day and the rest of us can also enjoy the array of wildlife on offer. There are also rumours and various sightings (not sure if Special Brew was involved) of a mysterious big cat in the area. Personally I don't believe them as the Yeti would've eaten it. A sure fire hit and worth a trip out to Alwoodley for anyone's money.

My boyfriend convinced me to go on a cycling mission to Eccup reservoir recently. He has a knack of…read moremaking a million miles away sound really close and as I was pressed for time I began to whinge part way there when I realised this wasn't the 15 minute bike ride I'd planned for, being about seven miles up hill! Upon arrival I stopped whingeing immediately. The sun was just beginning to set, and the reservoir, which is HUGE looked absolutely breathtaking! We stopped to catch our breath and as we gazed out across the water I couldn't believe we were within cycling distance of home. Before it got too dark to see much we cheekily jumped a couple of gates to get closer to the water. The reservoir was so still and the trees formed silhouettes against the darkening sky as we stood on the pebbly shore. If you feel the urge to get out of the city for some peace, fresh air and beautiful views, Eccup reservoir is the perfect place!
