The entrance off Kaierstrasse might cause you to look twice - go through an old passageway, on your right is the cloakroom and up the stairs is the Orange Peel bar itself. Unlike many other places in Frankfurt, this is an easy-going, un-self-conscious venue, with a friendly atmosphere, unostentatious interior and broad mix of clientele. We got there just after 9pm for the Tuesday blues night, and the crowd (thin at 9.15pm, packed out by 11.30pm) was a mix of students, middle-aged types, hipsters and grey-haired blues fans. The booze was pretty cheap and the bar service was quick and friendly. No food - eat before you come! Most importantly, the music was very good. The house band played for an hour, serving up well-executed blues tinged with a hint of funk - one or two standards (like Hoochie Coochie Man, which they nailed) and some rarities. Although the leader is Tommie Harris on drums, the MC'ing was done by the guitarist, who chatted away to the crowd in a mix of German and English (at least half of the band are originally from the US as far as I can tell). The second half of the evening was 'open stage' with all comers welcome to join the house band for a number or two. Fun times; we were sorry we had to leave before the night was over. The crowd were still cheering on the band and the open stage guests, who ranged from OK to excellent. If you bring your guitar, and you know the opening licks for 'Jonny B Goode', then you too might be able to join in ...

Compared to the other cities, Frankfurt's market was on the larger end of the scale and extends for several blocks beginning near the river and winding its way up through the city in no real discernible pattern. Unlike other markets, it also has much more of a focus on food and drink with a broad variety of items beyond just the traditional foods of the region as was characteristic of other markets. Because of its meandering layout, it's a bit more difficult to be sure you've seen it all. Like all the markets, the centerpiece is a giant lighted Christmas tree (white lights only) and this market is set amidst a scenic square of reconstructed half-timbered houses making for a beautiful backdrop. Not my favorite market despite its scenic nature and for me not a destination I would seek out on a Christmas market vacation, but worth a visit if you happen to be in town during Christmas.

The Christmas market is quite expansive, going on for several city blocks. It would be difficult to not feel holiday cheer when walking along the stalls. I know the festival is focused on Christmas, but people of all religions would enjoy the this event. There are carousel rides for the kids, fun music, and the best of all, lots of food and beverages! Carnivores have a wide variety of choices, with huge grills full of sausages. I heard from several meat-eaters that the food is delicious. They have offerings for those of us who do not eat meat. Of course, lots and lots of french fries smothered in mayo, as well as sweet and savory crepes. The cheese crepes are so good, served on a big wafer cookie instead of a plate (smart idea.) The best part, though, is by far the yummy varieties of beverages. Since it super cold in the winter, the hot Gluhwein is a real winner. Mulled wine, hot enough to warm you up but not boiling to where the alcohol content is diminished. The mix of Apfelwein and Gluhwein, served with a slice of orange, is also tasty. There are also many stalls with bottled alcohol for sale. Some of the best I tried were varieties of alcohol made with honey. Rum, whiskey, even grappa! The employee gave out samples and it was easy to spend a lot of money there! Early evening is the best time to visit if you hate large crowds. Make sure you secure your valuables. There are many pick-pocketers, so men need to keep wallets in front pockets and women need to wear purses that cross their bodies. Our friends experienced some Syrian refugees literally sliding their hands in their back pockets. Just be aware of your surroundings and you will have a great time!

The CPhI show that I attended used 11 halls I believe, and several were using 2 floors. To get between each hall you must use interconnecting walkways, but from Hall 1 to Hall 11 is quite a trek. There is a shuttle that runs between them also, but the line was also quite long. The halls are clean and well lit. Most have very high ceilings, but a few were much lower and felt cramped (and hot). There were plenty of restaurants available for lunch, and the food was of decent quality and price. Getting to the Messe was easy as there was a subway station located within the center. Getting onto a train after the show can take awhile however. The Messe is about 20-25 minute walk from the city center shopping area. Overall, it is not one of my favorite venues for trade fairs.

Your could trail around this for a full day (we did) and still not get to see every hall. We managed 9 out of around 15-20 but that was definitely enough. There are a couple of things to say. Positives are that it has good transport links, there is a shuttle bus to run you between halls (yes it's that big) and I quite like that some of it is built up the way rather than just sprawling over a huge area. Means lots of escalators to get you to the higher halls, but that's ok in my opinion. Other than that it was clean, efficient and A ok all round. Nothing to fear here if you are exhibiting at or visiting a show here. We were at the ambiente show and it was excellent. Well worth a look.
