What a great fabric shop!! For the past couple of years I've been buying fabric at every city I…read morevisit and of course I was very excited when I came to Europe to be able to buy fabric made in a Italy and France!! I had found another fabric shop here in Florence but it was so expensive that I wasn't able to justify such a purchase. I found Bassi on the very last day we spent in Florence, as I was walking through a street market I just happened to see fabric bolts stacked against a window and I had to go in. This store is long and narrow, it has thousands of bolts of fabric which are arranged by category and fabric type for the most part. You find all the wool, the sequins and beaded fabric, stretch, and cottons together, etc.. I literally looked at every section. I did buy a couple selections, I bought a beautiful gray sheer with satin appliqué fabric that I will use to make a cocktail dress. It was €29 per meter which is expensive for me (not expensive at all in the grand scheme of things as far as fabric in Italy goes) and I bought some very pretty printed polyester satin fabric that I can make dresses and jumpsuits with that can be easily thrown in the washing machine for about 9€ per meter, double width, which is an amazing price. Service was also great. They don't really hound you much in shops in Italy, they let you look around. They may ask you once if you need help, but that is it. I really like that. OnceI got to the counter, the owner of the store started talking to me and I found out that he travels to Miami and NYC quite a bit, which was pretty neat. Overall this was a win all around for me!!

Mid…read moreDecember (2019) My husband and I were walking around Florence in between our slotted times for the Galleria dell'Accademia and the Uffizi Gallery, and I did a google search for a fabric store. Several came up, but the Bacci Tessuti was the closest. When I walked in the door, I was surprised how large it was! Long and narrow, clean and had bolts and bolts of different fabrics arranged by type. After the requisite 'Buon Giorno,' I tried to use my very limited Italian to ask for a print stretch fabric for a top. There were three employees/(owners?) near the register. All were very nice and (thank you!) spoke some English. One lady said she could help, and took me to the counter where the print stretch fabrics were. She asked what exactly I was looking for, and then started pulling bolts from the shelves. (Unlike fabric stores in the US where customers walk among the bolts, the bolts I was looking at were on shelves behind a counter, though there were other bolts you could get next to) We worked together to find several fabrics that I loved. I was able to touch the fabrics and compare. She also had some suggestions. I did not feel rushed, and she would have helped me as long as I wanted, (the store had very few customers at that time) but I had limited time because of our Uffizi time slot. Seeing which fabrics I was drawn to, the woman went back to the remnant pile and found two of the fabrics I was looking at, so offered them at a reduced price. It was very difficult to choose, as they had so many lovely prints, but finally decided on four. I would have loved to explore the store more, but couldn't. Because of it's size, I would suggest you know what type of fabric you want before you enter the store. It made the shopping so much easier and less overwhelming. I would definitely go back if ever I'm in Florence, Italy again. :)

Hands down, the BEST meal we ate in Italy. Our hotel…read morebartender recommended it - the only thing he was wrong about is that you should dress, at least a little. Our American attire (jeans and casual tops) were quite out of place amid the chic Italian locals. The staff, however, never batted an eye and treated us like their best customers. When we selected a very modestly priced bottle of wine (prices range from 30-900), the server tactfully suggested a different but comparably priced bottle. It wasn't a busy evening, but all other guests appeared to be local. I've always been told to eat where the locals eat. Good advice. Our cheese tray appetizer was fabulous and paired nicely with the waiter's suggested wine. One party ordered the gnocchi ... literally little pillows of melt-in-your mouth amazingness. Another had the salmon ... the BEST salmon any of us had ever tasted - again, melt-in-your-mouth. Two of us shared the sea bass ... this was an experience in and of itself. Giovanni himself brought the finished dish to our table and cleaned it in the most elegant, lovely and professional way we've ever seen. His movements were fluid and precise, it was beautiful to watch. We were completely full after dinner but couldn't pass up selections from the beautifully presented dessert tray. The four of us shared small pieces of three different desserts and were still presented with a lovely (and delicious) cookie and chocolate tray. Of course, in true Italian style, we finished with limoncello. The restaurant is beautifully decorated in a modern but cozy motif. The staff was very friendly and welcoming when we really expected to be treated like Americans (if you didn't notice, they don't really love Americans in Italy). The food was seriously out of this world. The bill was quite reasonable (€ 240 for 4 of us). We definitely recommend having dinner here ... dress nicely and come hungry!

The €6/person cover is a bit off putting at first but no questions this place had the best assort of bread baskets. They offered at least 3 different kinds and refilled while we were waiting for our dinner. It wasn't just the plain bread sticks or the stiff cuts of bread. The service was also quite attentive. They gave us the option to either dine inside or outside, but we'd be with the smokers. It was a beautiful evening so we chose to eat outside. The outdoor portion has beautiful circle lamp decorations and surrounded by green garden plants. We ordered the Filet of Beef in Chianti red wine sauce and Roasted Pigeon. Both of the meals were delicious and priced as expected €28-30. At the end of the meal they also gave us a complementary biscotti and chocolate plate so we were glad that we didn't end up ordering another dessert since this was plenty for us to share! For the interior seating they have signs of all of the awards or recognition they have won in the past. Apparently back in the day Princess Diana was documented as coming by and they have a photo of her framed inside.
