This was my first time going to the Newport Folk Festival! I only attended one of the three days,…read morewhich was plenty for me. The festival had 3 stages with performers (one large and two smaller ones), with all the times organized on the app. In addition to the stages, there were multiple tents with merchandise, clothing, and non-alcoholic drinks and food. One building had actual public restrooms for men/women, everywhere else has porta potties (long lines everywhere though). There were only 2 areas where you could purchase alcohol; two beer gardens very far apart from each other. 100 people line to get into the beer gardens, without the ability to bring any drinks back outside. Clearly to limit the amount of obnoxiously drunk people, but definitely a buzz kill (literally) when you want to walk around and drink while listening to live music. For sure losing a lot of money by limiting where you can buy and drink alcohol!! Huge miss on the festival's part!! Criticism on one of the stages we watched, was the audio was way off (M. Ward was performing). His microphone kept going in and out, as did multiple guitars of his. You could tell he was getting frustrated, as he made multiple comments. Audio guy seemed more interested in eating his large burrito than paying attention and doing his job. Another negative would be the security staff. As we were watching one of the artists perform, one older lady started tapping everyone in the row to get my partner's attention (we had been sitting in our seats for over an hour at this point, with only 5 minutes left in the performance). She started yelling at him to get up, because he wasn't allowed to have a fold up chair in our row. Seemed absolutely ridiculous to cause a scene over. We didn't realize that was the rule, and would've happily moved our chair immediately after the artist ended. As soon as my partner got up to set the chair on the end of the aisle, they quickly gave his seat to someone else waiting to sit down. Multiple people in the audience said they remembered this rude staff member from last year, as always causing a scene; and other staff members of security also apologized for her and stated she's "always this rude, none of them like her". When you have a staff member that the AUDIENCE remembers from previous festivals, as being mean and rude for no reason, it's time to let them go. Seems that going to AND leaving the concert was a catastrophe for people, especially if you drove. We came quite a few hours after the start, left before the last band played, and took a water ferry back to our hotel in Newport- so we personally did not have any problems with that. OK experience to try out once if you really like folk music, but can say I will not be back.

2016 was my first year attending the Newport Folk Festival & I made it back again this summer!…read more There are 3 stages spread out over the fort with 2 smaller venues to catch acts. The main (Fort) stage had the bigger & more established acts. On the perimeter of "seating" were food trucks & beer gardens. Lots of room to put down a blanket & great visibility but no damn shade which can be a problem when the heat is pushing 90 degrees like it was last year. I preferred the other stages that have more up & coming artists like. Again, these also are flanked by merchandise tents & food vendors. They offer seating & standing room but it's limited. It's about a 5 minutes walk from all 3 stages so you can take in a lot of music in a limited time. It's quite overwhelming but definitely worth going if you're into live music. There are plenty of options to get to Fort Adams (Ferries from Newport & Jamestown, biking & on-site parking.) The festival does sell out usually on the day tickets are released but they're easy to unload as it's so popular.

As I was looking for a place to have a nice dinner with a few coworkers, Wharf Southern Kitchen and…read moreWhiskey Bar ABSOLUTELY caught my eye. First of all, let's talk about the space. Nestled in the Wharf, it was a cute little place with both an up and downstairs. We reserved a spot for around 5:30 (in April) and it was pretty open. There weren't too customers yet, and it was nice and quiet. If you're looking for a ton of space for the seating area, I will say that there isn't too much room/it's pretty nice and cozy! At Wharf Southern Kitchen and Whiskey Bar, they've got a line of booths along the wall, a bar area right in the center and at the actual bar, a high top, another bar at one of the entrances, and a table that seats six. Now let's chat about the service. Our waitress was wonderful, patient, and was extremely helpful when asked questions and also gave SUCH wonderful suggestions. There were MANY fantastic choices on their menu and I was having a pretty difficult time narrowing down which one I really wanted, but with our waitress's help, I was able to choose pretty quickly (and they were AMAZING choices!) Now the food! The wait for the food honestly wasn't that long, and when we got it, we ABSOLUTELY CHOWED... -The Crispy Chicken Bites were AMAZING! I ended up upgrading to the Buffalo Style, and it DID NOT disappoint at all! The Bleu Cheese crumbles were just the perfect amount, and the Buffalo sauce was JUST enough to still enjoy the crispiness of the chicken. I DID ask for ranch on the side, and that just was *chef's kiss*! -I've never had fried pickles before, but I certainly have never seen a restaurant do it with whole pickles. Though it was my first time trying fried pickles, it tasted great! I wouldn't say it's anything special, but it's a great, and lighter on the fried side, appetizer! -I was having a hard time choosing what entree to enjoy, but I'M SOOOO glad that I went with the Smoked Brisket Chopped Cheese! I'm not a big brisket girl, but I will say that this was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! At first when it came out on the bun, I was a little skeptical of how it would taste, but it definitely didn't disappoint! The brisket was cooked SO well with the perfect amount of seasoning, and it all just melted so perfectly together as I was eating it. And the tater tots were SO AMAZING (though on the saltier side) and SO perfectly crispy. I've only got great things to say about Wharf Southern Kitchen & Whiskey Bar & I WILL be back here/will suggest it to my friends visiting Newport one day!

No one at the hostess stand, slow to take orders, and over 30 minutes for food even with very few customers. Food: The burger came on a slightly sweet bun with a house mac sauce. The fries were crisp but on the smaller portion. Unfortunately, the quality of the burger meat was questionable. Chowder tots wasn't great. I would not recommend.
