Maybe we have alligator blood in our veins because our immune systems are extraordinary. This year, well... I got the flu for the first time in my entire life. I thought I had strep throat, as I've never had that either, but I knew my throat hurt terribly bad. If I have to sit at a doctor's office while I feel terrible, this is the one to go to. It's really quite beautiful for a doctor's office, inside and out. That's not the reason I would recommend it though. I was in and out of there in 45 minutes tops. I wasn't in the waiting room more than 20 minutes, and that includes the time it took to fill out the paperwork. The doctor and nurses were nice and very thorough and took the time to explain the prescribed medications and how long I could expect to be sick. We took my son for a physical exam so he could join the wrestling team, and we were in and out of the doctor's office in 30 minutes. Both times we were walk-ins. Their hours are much better than a regular doctors office too, since they are open until 6 pm during the week and 3 pm on weekends. I've heard of other doctors referring to these type doctor's offices as doc-in-a-box clinics, but I much prefer using Urgent Care to a doctor that will make me wait 3 days for an appointment when I'm sick. I think it's obvious which doctors are really more concerned for the patients' health, and I'm sticking with Urgent Care By The Bay for my family's health needs (but they probably won't see us more than once every 2-3 years).

We went in on Thursday because my daughter had a sore throat, that she was crying about. It's a big deal because she is usually a very tough cookie. We have both had strep throat more than once, so I am familiar with what it looks like. We saw the NP Lindsey and was told her results were negative even thought the look was very consistent with strep she actually had a NEW virus going around that causes ulcers in your throat. She continued to tell my daughter how she knows it hurts, she knows it's painful but she'll feel better soon. She also let me know in somewhat of a condescending tone that there was nothing that could be done about the pain. I asked several times because I just could believe it. She eventually said I could have her gargle with equal parts maalox and Benadryl, but only if I was certain my 7 year old could gargle. Needless to say I left furious, it just didn't make any sense. Of corse today is Monday, after my child has suffered all weekend, we get a call letting us know she DOES in fact have strep and her antibiotic would be called in. We'll just stick to our well visits with Katie/skinner. I'll continue to take my child to the children's urgent care when she is not feeling well.

The doctor was friendly and ultimately prescribed the right treatment, covering two possible diagnoses at once, which I appreciate. However, the communication was lacking. The discharge paperwork only referenced one condition, with no mention of the second possibility. I only found out because my husband recognized the prescription names. When I asked the staff what the second medication was for, the answer was essentially that it "goes with" the first, which isn't an explanation. Patients need to know what they're being treated for and why, especially when the diagnosis is uncertain.
