The recently opened University of New Mexico Adult Emergency unit and Critical Care Tower is a huge…read moreimprovement over the previous emergency room. One thing that really struck me was the security. We had to stop and be wanded and have all of our belongings searched before we were allowed to enter the waiting room and patient check-in area. It feels good knowing there are no weapons in the area and that everyone has been checked. Don't forget to leave your pepper spray in the car. There was an individual who was just kind of hanging out, laying down on one of the chairs. Security came to move him along and before long, there were 6 to 7 officers surrounding the individual who was refusing to leave. They were able to diffuse the situation and remove the gentleman without violence or harm. I was extremely impressed with the security in this new emergency unit and the professionalism of the officers. Another great feature is the mobile triage unit. In the waiting room, folks are triaged without having to get up from their chairs. Of course this is extremely helpful for people with mobility issues and the team was expeditious and professional. Another great feature are the private consultation cubbies that they have in the waiting room. The providers can come out and meet confidentially with the patient's family without having everyone in the waiting room listening. A super way to protect HIPAA. The visitor check-in staff were clear, kind, and personable, even with people who are not particularly kind to them. I felt like they actually cared about me and my family, which was really nice for a change. They also seemed to know who we were when I went back up to see if we could go back yet. I was really surprised because it had been an hour or so and many people had rolled through, but they knew right away that we were already checked in and able to go back to visit my family member. Each family is escorted to their family members' room in the back so there aren't people wandering around which again ensures greater security. My family member received exceptional care in the new emergency unit. He had Level 2 Trauma and was assessed quickly with myriad tests and imaging studies completed. We arrived at the hospital around 8 PM in the evening and after making sure my family member was being taken care of we left and were called at 4am to come to pick him up. This is remarkable considering many people, including me, have noted waiting upwards of 15 hours in the old UNMH emergency room. We were seen and my family member treated and released within eight hours! This was simply astounding to me, given how long it usually takes to be taken care of in an emergency room. The staff in the emergency unit were professional, kind, and forthcoming with information when they had it. This included a nurse and an x-ray tech with whom we interacted directly. Also, when we were trying to figure out where to go, a really nice staff member from the hospital (possibly a nurse or tech), who was taking his dinner break, kindly walked us to where we needed to go. Even when I tried to wave him off because I wanted him to eat his dinner while it was hot, he still proceeded further to make sure that we got to the right location quickly. He was also incredibly personable and kind. I feel that my family member received top-notch care by an experienced and professional team of individuals who worked together well to care of, not only my family member, but me and my other family member. At this point, I am happy to highly recommend the new University of New Mexico Hospital, emergency department and critical care tower. You can drop patients off at the Yale exit for the adult emergency unit. The pediatric emergency unit is a separate entrance and another location (see a map of UNMH online before you go). I don't have details on that since I haven't used it. I'm sorry, but I did not take pictures of the emergency department or waiting area in order to comply with HIPAA and to show general consideration for those in the waiting room. I hope you never need to go there, but if you do, you'll definitely be in good hands.

Back in August or September of 2016 I assessed with Awake and Aware and was placed with my current therapist. Now I'm awkward and really don't do well with new people in general. However, I don't recall my first appointment with my therapist which means it went very well. At Awake and Aware I've always been treated with kindness and respect. Despite my constant mean mug they always greet me with a smile and appear happy to see me. Next, my therapist. I've been around the therapy block and this is the best match I've ever had. My therapist has a sense of humor, is able to put my feet to the fire when needed, and best of all is authentic. I'm purposefully not posting their name here because you got to trust the process of being placed with the right person for you. DBT is the form of therapy used at Awake and Aware and clients are required to attend skills group once a week for 90 minutes. If you're looking for a therapist this could be the place for you.

It is a fairly large place with I'm estimating 8-9 rooms. They would not say if I was within 6 feet or any other distance of the infected person. Because of this refusal and that they were so eager to book a tele appointment I can only assume they are incompetent in dealing with this public health emergency and instead are more concerned about $$$ Truth is always best.

I spent probably 1.5 months with the staff here doing some exercises at the location + take home exercises on my own as well and thought they were, for once, not too bad for a couch potato like me. But like I said, what I appreciated more was that they listened. I raised potential concerns that I had and talked about one specific symptom on one of my follow up appointments that seemed like it wouldn't so much be physical but may be a bit more neurology related and they honestly told me their capabilities and their thought on potential next steps that I might need to explore (since it might not be something that physical therapy that they could help with). She is obviously intelligent and I can tell that she is conscientious, and the bad experiences I have had with the caregivers are not her fault, as far as I can tell. So what kind of review can I give? Rosa is a 4, the other gal in the office was a 1, and the caregivers have been about 2-stars. I am guessing that 3 stars for the agency is a good compromise between all those various factors.

I am 66 AND worked in…read morehealthcare admin last position as a division CFO for a company called Continental Rehab Systems which merged with Healthsouth. I am probably one of the most sympathetic people to the difficulties of the industry. After a broken femur in my hip I was transferred from Lovelace to Advanced. First note was started by Physical Therapists. And is a beautiful facility which is saying a lot because in my last job we opened 3 new facilities in different western states. So I have seen new facilities and have also seen SNF's aka skilled nursing facilities. There is a reason Ron Bell the "attorney" always talks about them The staff is really good specially the therapists, OT's and PT's. Kind knowledgeable and they listen. The nursing staff is mostly good and especially the day nurses. As with ANY hospital the doc may have one opinion, the nurses another, the therapists another and the PA's and NP's another. This is called healthcare and it is just getting worse with all the government issues. I pray they are not too adversely affected by the inevitable government cuts. Also you HAVE to advocate for yourself and your loved ones if it is them who are here. Believe it or not docs and clinical staff are human. And unless YOU (like me) are the patient you truly have no idea what the patient is feeling and going through. I have been very verbal about my concerns and there have been issues but the staff listened. Did they always agree, no. Were we able to come to mutually acceptable conclusions, pretty much every situation. If you sit back and bitch quietly it only affects your mental health. And note I have a mother in law who does this at the facility she is at in CA. If you don't like the current healthcare situation (don't even get me started on Optum) read, talk to your NM reps, read about what is going on with the government and best go into the industry. Albuquerque is woefully understaffed. At every facility. Compared to when I was in healthcare the demands and hours are much crazier. So unless you speak up don't complain. Well, the scope is really tough to explain, but for me, it starts with parenting, specifically with dads. Of course, fatherhood is a subject I'm particularly passionate about, I'm simply fascinated by our ever-shifting non-nuclear family roles, the ways in which we dads now often balance the homemaking demands of everyday life, and more than anything, our lack of experience on the job. The parental job, that is. In many cases, we grew up in homes without solid father figures of our own, and when we go out into the big grown world, we often don't know where to begin with our own children. At PB&J, training dads to be dads often begins when dads get out of prison. "Imagine watching a father helping his daughter tie her shoelace out on this playground, or pretend to cook, or help her on the playground equipment," the Executive Director, Susannah Burke, said to our group during a tour. "Very often, this is the first time they've had an opportunity to connect, to share one-on-one experiences, and to learn how to care for their child. We watch relationships form and grow deeper, we watch kids grow stronger, it all starts right here." And we haven't begun talking about the moms. They're strongly represented here, too. This center offers more than day care, it's more like day school, day training, and day support, for endless families in Albuquerque's south valley and beyond. Over 40+ years they've held programs all over the state, including women's prisons. Personally, I love that what they do isn't overtly complicated. They provide shelter, a safe zone, and love, so people can thrive. New Mexico is blessed to have this organization.

I had the privilege of taking a tour of the facility with other Yelpers who came out to lend a hand on a variety of projects, and we learned in depth just how much this organization does, and how much it has grown since it's birth in 1972. They provide so many services to support and nurture the family dynamic including providing a safe, healthy, stimulating environment for children to learn, and opportunities for parents (many whom have struggled with mental illness, depression, addiction) to be educated and taught how to reconnect and rebuild relationships with their children. The fruit is evident, the success stories are mounting, and we have this great organization to thank for it. Let's continue to support everything they do!!!
