I recently moved to Sacramento and have been having one heck of a time finding a new church to…read moreattend. In looking for something that fell outside of a denomination, and followed a more modern approach, I had a lot of choices. There are many fantastic non-denominational churches in the area, but they usually are larger organizations that fall into the "mega" church category, thus making it hard to meet people and really get connected until months into being a part of it. Also, these styles of churches usually have "simpler" sermons and place more value on the entertainment part of the service vs. the message. Finding Streamline hit the nail on the head. They were a smaller church with a diverse group of people, they were extremely welcoming and they balanced their worship with the message. Both pastors themselves reached out to me within a few days of coming asking if I needed anything and helped me start getting connected (thanks Dave and Marlowe). That was a first and that what sealed the deal for me. What I like most about the church are two things: they are growing and their room to be involved in things without the months of navigation and the messages. The messages (sermons) are relevant to how our society works today, and they are balanced between "milk and bread" and "meat", so whether your just starting to know God or you're a Christian that needs a bit more (of a push, conviction, or to slapped with that bible!) you'll get something out of the entire service. Their sermons are available in audio and video (YouTube and iTunes) so I binged watched them instead of Netflix they're so good!

It is as she was defending the both of us. Here at this church, there was not any of that. Every person here was just so very friendly, was just so very welcoming. Uh oh, I thought, maybe I sat in someone's regular seat and she's going to say something. She broke into a warm smile and introduced herself! When I told her I was just visiting, she invited me to join her and the others in Fellowship Hall after the service for coffee and snacks. (When I did, after the service, she introduced me to all the people at the surrounding tables.) During the service the Pastor invited visitors to take a plant home from the welcome table. Pastor Linda is a gem - knowledgeable, warm, and so caring! She remembered my name the second time I attended, and recalling that I mentioned loving to ski and snowboard, introduced me to a woman who invited me to join her ski club! When I brought my husband, a New England guy, to check it out, even he loved it. The "frozen chosen" thawed right out! Pastor Bobby had us laughing and giving an "Amen!" When I asked another member about baptizing a new baby, he mentioned it to Pastor Linda. She gave me her cellphone number and said just call her! Between the welcoming Pastors and congregation, the preschool, the small groups, (and location near Freeport Bakery for a stop on the way home :-D) we have, after a few months, found a church. I had visited three other churches in the area, of different denominations, also nice, but this one is really special. This is a church that practices what it preaches.Centennial is the most diverse church we've attended regularly - when the Tongan or Fijian choir sings it's like being transported to the South Pacific - beautiful men's and women's voices blending in perfect harmony. (The chancel choir and pianist/organist share beautiful music, too.) Canned goods are collected, and donations just for the hungry taken at communion. Another couple, newly married, was sitting next to us our first time at Centennial together. They, too, were there for their first time. Yesterday we happened to see them sitting next to us again and recognized each other - all agreed we've found a good church and plan to keep coming.

First, even though it is Chinese Community Church. No one speaks Chinese ( No Cantonese, No Mandarin, not even an accent ). CCC is almost 100 years old and it have been 60 years since there was a Chinese speaking service. The current Pastor Louis Lee is from back east U.S. and does not speak Chinese. He is a very nice guy who really likes people. He is always interested in what you have to say. Bible based preaching on contemporary family issues. Always Gospel based. The congregation overall is like many churches, a bit on the older side. There are a number of families here. Ages from newborns to very old. Everyone is friendly with new people, and you will get a gift for being a first time visitor. The Sunday services are done in CCM style; Chris Tomlin, Paul Baloche with some hymns thrown in. The music is very good. They have good musicians. They also have Bible studies, Youth Bible Studies, programs for all ages, missionary programs, outreach events- big Fall Food Festival is coming this month and a Joong project later in the year. The other attraction of the church is the gym and the youth programs. Having a basketball gym is a big plus. They have youth nights where they run basketball teams and play in tournaments. In the middle, there is a separate child care center. There is much going on here. Get involved and you will have a great time getting to know God and Jesus, other people and yourself, like I did 20 years ago.

I have attended this popular bazaar since the 1960's for the food, games, crafts and music. The East Wind Band was scheduled today, but I missed them. There were a few games for the little kids to win prizes ($1 per ticket) and a spin wheel game to win money, if the wheel lands on the number you put your money on. I played 5 games, lost each one, and was answering a question to the worker, when they spun the wheel right away, and my numbers hit double before I could put my money down. The server said "my bad, sorry " knowing it was his fault, so that was my clue to stop! There was a large variety of foods to choose from. My favorite is the teriyaki chicken, but they were out of it by the time I got there. They had curry bowls, ebi (tempura shrimp) teriyaki sandwiches, gyoza, etc. outside for purchase, and a variety of sushi and udon noodles inside, with plenty of tables for eating out of the heat. I ordered a California roll, Inari, and a spam musubi. They tasted okay, and could've been fine without it, but I mainly ordered to help support the church's fundraiser. I didn't order the food outside, because it was a hot day, and i didn't know how long they've been sitting out on the racks. I did not find any crafts this year of which I was looking for. They included a booth for mochi and manju this year, and it was really popular. Though there seemed to be less booths and no crafts goods or plants for sale this year, I always look forward to this annual event.

We arrived right at opening and it was bumper-to-bumper with people. Definitely a packed house. They've added a bus service now, which is a smart move given how popular it's become. Tons of food options, cultural booths, performances, and community vibes. You can really feel the heart and tradition behind it all. That said, I'm not a fan of big crowds, so this might be my last time attending. But if you love lively events and want to experience a slice of Japanese-American culture, this bazaar delivers.
