Although not a member of the St. Andrew's congregation because of my Jewish faith, I have visited…read moreboth the old and new St. Andrew Catholic Church in Newtown, Pa. on many occasions. It is part of the Philadelphia Diocese, and operates an school by the same name on Wrights Road. The old brownstone single tower neo-Gothic structure, completed in 1880, has a wonderful ambiance, but it held only 200 people and became too small for the growing population of central Bucks County. A new modern open church was completed in the 1990's, just up Swamp Road. Its airiness and vaulted ceilings contributes to a sense that prayers fly upward and are amplified by the multitude of sincere entreaties below. It is a very warm church. Sadly, it seems that the main reason for visits over the years has been to attend funerals and the Blue Mass for our police officers and first responders. Father (Monsignor) Picard is a strong and compassionate leader of this faith community. He connects well with all, and offers a sincere ear and deep reflective response to all who seek his advise and aid. I found myself there yesterday after a neighbor I have known for many years passed away suddenly. The pews were full with his mourning family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Psalms were read. Songs were song, and eucharist was offered. Tears flowed. Embraces were extended and heart felt. The service ended and solemnly as it had begun, with Father Picard standing at the door offering one last, "Peace Be With You," to all who had come to celebrate and commiserate the life and death of a wonderful man too soon taken.

In the Roxborough-Manayunk area this is the coolest church there is, architecturally speaking. I grew up in the Holy Family parish (now called Holy Child), which is really the only other building with neat things to look at when you aren't gettin' down with the Holy Spirit, but St. John's was always the best for occupying my ever active imagination while I waited for the "go in peace' to finally be issued. Full of stained glass windows, intricate carvings, colorful murals, fancied up buttresses, arches, and columns, and with a massive pipe organ to boot.

They have a very active young adult group that meets for outings, sports, and even "Theology on Tap" where they go to a bar and have guest speakers about various spiritual and life issues. We were both baptized Catholic but had a non-catholic wedding. We decided to get our marriage blessed or "convalidated" in order to be god parents for our nephew and to feel more connected to our family and the Church. We approached Father Kelly about this and he was very welcoming and non-judgmental.

There was a full Mass, that was given by Father Paul. He was soft spoken and gave a beautiful sermon. The Homily was a bit long, but that is nothing new for a Catholic church. I was so happy to receive Communion - it had been way too long . . . If I weren't so upset, and it wasn't so inappropriate, I would have taken so, so, many pictures. The church was absolutely stunning, especially the gorgeous stained glass and statues.

Saturday afternoon my son became an Eagle Scout…read more The Court of Honor was held at the Washington Crossing United Methodist Church in Upper Makefield, PA. While I am not a member of the congregation, my son and his mother are. They allowed us to use alot of the space, including the old sanctuary, lounge and kitchen. We brought in food and decorations the day before and they provided all the tables and chairs needed for the 50 people invited to join the festivities. The staff was available to give directions on use of the facilities, and where things we needed were stored that we would have not discovered without their aid. The event went off smoothly with family, friends and scouts in attendance. Our Congressman, State Senator, and representatives of our State Assemblyman, Marine Corp, and BSA Council were in attendance to give stirring talks and read citations of congratulations to my son. It was a wonderful day that we will remember for the rest of our lives. For the young man it will profoundly influence the course of his life's journey. High respect, praise and gratitude to the elders of WCUMC and its members for allowing this occasion to take place, and for the living spirit of care and generosity that imbues them all and this day with Devine grace.
