What a neat little saloon! I'm never in this part of town for food or drinks, but I'm often next door at Aaron's Affordable Auto Repair, getting my car fixed. Today I dropped into Nevada Smith's for lunch. They had a Swiss & Bacon cheeseburger and fries for under $7. It was big and perfectly cooked. That, and a beer and sales tax brought it to $10. Nice! I can't comment on how it is during drinking hours, but it's well-lit, comfortable, and the stereo sounds great. Mo is friendly, polite, and prompt. Been seeing their advertised specials on various sites for a while now so we decided to give Nevada Smith's a try for Friday night "all you can eat" fish fry. First of all, the is NOT a dive bar. If you've ever been to a true dive bar, you would know that this place doesn't really qualify. But what it is, is a family friendly, neighborhood establishment with some rockin' food deals. We chose to sit in the back patio to be able to smoke. It's a good sized room, enclosed but with air openings and propane heaters. Picnic tables and benches throughout the patio made for plenty of seating. There were several families with small kids eating out there. Servers are really friendly and there are plenty of regulars. The fish fry special comes with two breaded and fried fish filets, a big helping of coleslaw and french fries. There is a condiment station in the middle of the patio with various hot sauces, lemons, malt vinegar, etc. The fish was crispy and steaming HOT so be careful. The fries were just fries and the coleslaw pretty decent. And the servers will just keep bringing you more fish until you're stuffed to the gills. Ha - catch that pun? The only weird thing is that you have a bartender and a server. And you get separate checks. And you have to pay each person separately. Just a little oddity but it's no problem since the servers are pretty johnny-on-the-spot and you don't have to wait long for anything, even getting and paying your tab. I have driven by this place almost weekly since 1993 and have never went inside. It looks just too sketchy for my tastes. Plus Miracle Mile, well, you know. What a FOOL I have been. We went there for the 1st time last Saturday night for steaks. What a great informal "restaurant" they have out in the back. It's like Lil' Abners, but at half the price. I had the ribs. They had some kind of catsup based sauce on them vs. darker BBQ sauce. More mild that I was expecting or use to. Wife had a T-Bone. She too said it was under seasoned. Kind of bland. Some restaurants lather on the steak seasoning, some don't. This place does not. I am just nit picking on the seasonings, as any time you can get an 18oz steak for $18.00, shut up and eat. I found this to be UNACCEPTABLE because my grandmother wanted Taquitos and I was looking forward to the fried chicken basket. After living here a long time, I finally had a chance to visit 'Nevada Smith's Steakhouse & Saloon'. I like my steak in a rather peculiar way, black and blue, the Ribeye was cooked to perfection. A great meal for an amazingly low price. The wait staff, 'Alexandria', actually took time to sit with me and explain the different options for weekly specials, never losing her focus on the other guest's needs, as the place was well visited. Nice little dive bar. We came in for the Friday all you can eat fish fry. At $6 a person you can't beat it. This definitely has the feel of being a bar with lots of "regulars" so after entering we weren't really sure if we should sit in the bar area or the patio but both serve food. The patio looked like the place to be and it was heated which is nice in Tucson in December. Service was prompt and the food was good. The $6 fish fry comes with coleslaw and fries so it's a steal of a price. I'd come back to this place for drinks and good people watching. Okay, this was my second attempt for "steak night" Thursday. The first time was a few months ago and it was very disappointing so I figured a second chance was in order. I again ordered the ribeye and baked potato. First the good...the potato was very good. Aaaannnnnnnnnd that's pretty much all the good. The temperature of the steak (medium rare) was close enough but it was, like last time, a pretty lousy cut of meat. I'm from Kansas originally and I know a damn good steak when I eat one. This was far from it. It was very stringy and I tasted absolutely no seasoning on it...at all. There was no sear or crust (no seasoning didn't help that) which adds a lot to the flavor of a steak in my opinion. Even the steak itself was pretty bland and flavorless. The service was just okay, with the server being pretty out of it and, although she did ask if I was "doing alright" a couple times, just as with last time (different server) she did NOT ask how my steak was. My guess is that they know that it's nothing to brag about so they know not to ask. If they were proud of the steaks they would likely be almost bragging when asking how you're doing. I wouldn't ask either. Just very disappointing, even at an attractive $17 price point. In this case, you DO get what you pay for. Actually, it's overpriced even at 17 bucks due to the glaring lack of quality. And I have to believe that it is consistently bad because this review could verbatim cover my last visit. If you want a kinda cool rustic dive bar, this will do. If you want a good steak, most anyplace else will beat this one. Two incredible things here. First the great buys on good meals. Using a limited menu with specials changing daily, this divey saloon offers really good food--especially steaks--cooked on a fireplace and served in either a bar or picnic bench patio environs. Which brings us to the second incredible thing, the ambiance. OK, you may not be a fan of dive bars, but this place offers a true saloon feel that I personally enjoyed. There were a few negatives. The biggest for us was the lack of good accessible seating. The owner was kind enough to give up his picnic table which was the best spot for my wife's mobility scooter, but getting in and out was difficult and the restrooms were on another level which meant that I would have had to driven her from the back door to the front and then back again if she had needed to use one. The second negative was the failure to label things on the limited salad bar. Which was butter, sour cream, horseradish, etc. Once figured out, however, they were fine. Then there were the baked potatoes. When baking in aluminum foil, the kitchen really should remove the foil or at least cut it before serving so that they potatoes don't continue steaming. Of course, with a fire in place, the ideal would be to have them thrown in and baked right on the coals. Yum. The string beans were under seasoned and somewhere in the overcooked realm for me. The steak, however, was cooked perfectly and deserves kudos. After all, that's why we were there, for that meat and at great prices. And, the drinks deserve mention, very good. Just don't expect a wine list or good draught beer. This is not high-end. Were it more accessible, I'd be back often. Unfortunately, we will only return when we have other friends who need a real Western experience oh and maybe on one of those occasional prime rib nights. The friends we went with, who don't have accessibility issues, plan to return for the Friday oyster special although it was clear that they ran out quickly. My guess, given the crowd there when we left at about 6:30 that getting to Nevada Smith's early is always a good idea. I wonder if Doc Holiday was playing poker in the back room? Hmm, I'll have to ask next time. read more

The second Saturday of each month is Prime Rib night. Everyone must come and do this. EVERYONE. They charge $14 for a massive slab of prime rib with a baked potato, vegetables, dinner roll and unlimited side salad. The only trick is that you have to get here before 4 to get a seat. We came at 5:00 in a party of 4 and were getting ready to leave because we were unable to find a seat (even at the bar), but the chef came out and asked a large table if we could squeeze in with them, which was really nice of him. Once the food servers take your order the food comes out really quickly. It does take some time for the servers to take everyone's orders because the place is packed, but once they get to you expect food fast. The prime rib is really good...like not The Keg good, but much, much better than a $14 meal should be. They also serve super potent horseradish, which is always a must for prime rib. I ate the entire thing, no problem, which for me is about 4.5 days worth of food. I always like the specials that they run and we always have a good time here...I just need to remind myself to come 90 minutes early to get a seat on the more popular nights. In fact, the server told us we had actually come on a slow night if you can believe that. Drinks are taken on another tab, and you'll need to pay for this bill in cash FYI. read more

Not sure how many of you know what a "dive bar" is, but this establishment is not. Try a blast from the past with eclectic bar memorabilia and, believe it or not, great food and hygiene. This place has GREAT food and the prices are reasonable. Nothing like the Meat Rack or Buff. You won't be bombarded by college kids or wafting smells of urine when you walk in. Karaoke on the weekends is you call it and the bartender will get you what you need. For those looking for a finer establishment with overpriced food and pretentious people look elsewhere. Well this place looked like lots of fun. We where going to stay for the wings which were a dozen for 4 dollars on that night but they did not have any salad so the wife could eat too. So 34 years ago, I was working at the Tucson Water Dept and I started dating a welder. This was his hangout and thus, it became MY hangout. I LOVED this place!! Daryl was so incredibly nice and respectful. But to be honest, I was like a fish out of water with the welder. So we broke up and I married soon afterwards. Fast forward and the marriage is over and I am good friends with a Concrete Company Owner. One of the first questions I asked him was if he had ever been to Nevada Smith's? I love this place! Great prices and awesome food specials. There is a good cast of regulars at this bar and staff is decent. Lots of patio space for groups and smoking. I've never not had fun at this bar, their New Years Eve party was a blast and a packed house. It is a "dive bar" so be prepared for that. I used to be there several times per week, but moved from that side of town, however I still make the trip every once in awhile to go back and visit. Nevada Smiths was a good find. I went for Thursday steak night which offers steaks from $7-$17 with the largest steak being a 22oz porterhouse for $17. All steaks also come with salad bar, bread, beans and baked potato. As for the steak, I had the porterhouse which was basically everything I was hoping for. There was a little bit more gristle than I would have preferred but flavor was spot on and it was cooked appropriately. I'm going to be going back semi- regularly, because it was REALLY GOOD. Something I didn't know when I sat down was that there is additional seating in the back. That seemed like the place to be as it was kind of hot in the bar area and while the seating in the back was outside it still seemed preferable. It's covered, the salad bar it right there, it's more spacious and you get to smell those steaks cooking because they grill them right out there! It's a little divey but if you're okay with that you might have just found an awesome steak deal. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Let's see....I heard about this place for some time, great food prices and good food for the money! Thursday steak night, we were up for it! They had a great selection of steaks, different cuts, no more than $17! The price could not be beat! With that steak (cooked perfectly and seasoned well) you get salad bar, beans or potato and a dinner roll! Plenty of food that tasted good! So far we were very happy and excited to have found a new place close to home to go out and eat! So what went wrong? First, out dinner bill came, just what we expected, price was right, but they hadn't added our 2 ice teas to it. Come to find out the food has to be billed separately from drinks...okay...that's inconvenient, but it is what it is. I asked the drink waitress for our separate bill for our, again, 2 ICE TEAS, she came over and said "those drinks will be $7, if your using a card $8" my jaw must have hit the floor!!!! $8 for 2 non-alcoholic ice teas? Can this be right??? $8!!!! Unfortunately I cannot justify that price, or the fact that they couldn't combine the bill. And sadly, only my dinner waitress got tipped-because I can't see tipping on top of $8 for JUST 2 cups of ice tea! I think we could've had a beer for cheaper! The strange thing to us both is the extra dollar added on for those beverages when running my card-but my dinner did not come with an extra charge. What is going on with the billing in this place? Was in town doing some concerts in the area. Stayed at the Amazon motel just up the street. This was in walking distance. Front part is a BAR, just a smallish bar with a jukebox, popcorn and one pool table. Seemed really local. Basic beers on tap like coors, bud, miller, michelob ultra. You can get small pitchers. also full bar. I was there on steak night and ordered a huge prime rib with beans, fries for $17. Good deal. You have to go downstairs to get the condiments and flatware. Also, very important here, the bar tab and the restaurant tabs are paid separately and the order taken by different wait people. This is very much a locals dive so you need to be patient and not too pushy for the best experience. Went early Friday night, based on waitress tip for the Oyster night. They fly them in every week and some guys shuck them downstairs. You give your food waiter $10. Oysters begin at 5pm so go earlier. Seriously. They run out fast and were plenty fresh. It is also fish night so expect a gazillion seniors that night. It's loud, hurried, bustling and a pretty good experience overall. Not a linen table cloth joint get it? Good. Enjoy. read more

My husband and I went for the $17.00 ribeye steak night. The price is great as it includes a baked potato, beans, and unlimited salad bar! My glass of Merlot was just $4.00. The steaks tasted awesome, and were flame-broiled where you could watch them cooking as you walked by. It was moist, and had a great char!
