Stadt Dinkelsbühl - Wunderbare Altstadt mit zu vielen Autos! (10/2016)

What a delight it was to walk around this charming medieval walled city of Dinkelsbühl! Not only…read moreyou can walk up and down the streets in this town, but you can also walk around the entire walled city with relative ease and rather quickly (now one side of the town is a little hilly) and thoroughly enjoy what this town offers. Dinkelsbühl lies on the northern part of the Romantic Road, and is one of three particularly striking historic towns, the others being Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Nördlingen. Dinkelsbühl (fortified by Emperor Henry V and became a municipal status in 1305 and became a Free Imperial City in 1351) is one of handful of medieval walled-cities preserved in Franconia (a region in Bavaria). Now, compared to another medieval walled city of Rothenburg o. d. T. not too far from here, you may find this town smaller and less commercialized. Unfortunately, thanks to recent COVID-19 restrictions/shut downs, none of the restaurants were open and most of the stores were closed for business including the Visitor Information Center, but under the normal circumstance there would've been many tables lined up in the main city square for folks to enjoy snacks, lunches and dinners. We long to go back to those days of being able to enjoy outdoor dining...perhaps in later 2021 (one could always hope). As is often the case with these old German towns, there are some churches in the city center. St. Georg Cathedral is a very prominent feature with its massive bell tower and Gothic architecture. It is rather gorgeous looking church inside (photos). Current Lutheran church of St. Paul looks fairly modern inside with half-circular chair arrangement for seating instead of the usual heavy wooden pews. The diorama of Advent and Christmas Nativity scenes (krippe) was sort of small but very nice in St. Paul. If you are in the area, you need to take a day and enjoy what this charming town has to offer. If you like walking, you'll enjoy walking around the whole city and enjoy looking at medieval city walls and towers throughout this town.
