Öland is just a fascinating Island. The landscape changes every few miles. And now and then you…read morefeel like on another planet (like Neptuni Akrar). And this is also the case here. Unreal, but yet natural rock formations line up on this beach here. Access is very easy, a huge unpaved parking lot (free of charge) close to the highway. We came here on a late afternoon on a perfect sunny day. Even then the place wasn't crowded. It's just a place to be for a while. Take an easy stroll, or sit down on one of the numerous rock formations and just take the whole scenario in. A calm, quiet and relaxing place. Almost magical.

Up here there's lots of green, big and healthy forests. There is plenty of parking right at the entrance to this - at times - magical forest. The place is undergoing some renovations, reconstructing. A new visitors centre is coming soon. Once you enter there are several trails leading through the forest. A bike trail which also can be used for strollers / wheelchairs. A small, a medium and a big loop trail are other options to choose from. We took the long loop. Leading up to the very north of the island. First you walk through the nice forest, later on you have access to the fantastic shoreline. A beautiful stone-beach. Even the sunniest day....there weren't ANY visitors. We were the only ones. Can't believe this isn't more popular. We enjoyed the views very much up here. You will also pass the Swiks shipwreck on the way and the magical Trolleken: a tree right out of a fairy tale....or scary movie. At the northern end you'll see the lighthouse on the other end. The trail back (west side) then is not really well marked - unlike the eastern trail. We got lost once or twice. It's also less maintained and bit grown over by trees and plants. But besides that we had a fantastic day here in this amazing forest and shoreline. Not to be missed when in Öland.

The parking lot is also not paved, but otherwise fine. There's plenty of parking, but surprisingly few visitors. Even though we came here on a beautiful sunny day. The remains of the fortress are quite complete and if you climb up, you can get a better view of it. Of course a higher perspective would reveal an even better view. But to get that picture you'll need a helictoper....or a drone with a camera maybe. Even though the fortress is pretty much gone, you can see all the remains of the inner and outer walls and surely it was an impressive sight when it was still in one piece. It's a nice sight, only a quick walk from the parking lot on a nice, open field. Be respectful and be careful when you climb up, so you won't damage the ruins any further. To me it was also suprising - besides the few visitors - that there isn't any fee or entrance here. It's just there.... and that's very nice.
