UPDATE -- SEPTEMBER 2026 Since posting my original review,…read moreadditional events have occurred that I believe are important to add to the public record. I am providing this update because the issues I raised did not end with my original review. Additional documentation, records requests, communications, and a September 24, 2026 meeting have occurred since then. RECORDS AND DOCUMENTATION On April 13, 2026, I returned to DeMocko Chiropractic to obtain records and documentation that I had previously requested. During that visit, Shannon Smith told me, loudly, that she was not going to give me my medical records because of what had happened previously. After that refusal, I contacted Lisa Hicks-Jones with the North Carolina Board of Chiropractic Examiners. I ultimately received my 96-page SOAP records on April 30, 2026. The timing is important. I had already been represented by three attorneys during the course of my claim. The contemporaneous work-status documentation I had been requesting from the chiropractic office was not provided to those attorneys by the office either. My attorneys did have documentation because I provided them with what I had. This was therefore not simply a matter of me failing to request or obtain paperwork for myself. Robyn M. Buckley, one of the attorneys who represented me, specifically addressed documentation and work-status issues during the handling of my claim. Her communications concerning those issues became part of the reason I continued pursuing the missing documentation. When I finally obtained the 96-page SOAP records on April 30, 2026, they still did not contain the contemporaneous work-status documentation I had been seeking. The reimbursement documentation came separately. I did not receive the statement reflecting approximately $4,498 in charges until June 2026. In other words, the records, work-status documentation, and reimbursement documentation were not provided to me together as one complete set. They came at different times and after additional efforts to obtain them. WORK-STATUS DOCUMENTATION During my treatment, I understood that I would receive the doctor's work-status documentation after completing my treatment. I had been asking about that documentation during the third week of treatment. At the September 24, 2026 meeting, Shannon Smith stated that I had refused a doctor's note. That statement does not match my recollection of what occurred or the circumstances under which I was requesting the documentation. During the same meeting, Dr. Joseph W. DeMocko stated that the office does not provide more than two weeks of work restrictions. That limitation was not clearly communicated to me when I was requesting the documentation, and it does not answer the separate question of what happened to the work-status documentation I understood I was supposed to receive. There was also a point during the September 24 meeting when the issue of contemporaneous work-status documentation was discussed and Dr. DeMocko appeared unfamiliar with the terminology and asked whether the office had those documents. I am documenting that exchange because it raised additional questions for me about how work-status documentation was handled during my treatment. SEPTEMBER 24, 2026 MEETING The unresolved documentation issues ultimately became part of a September 24, 2026 meeting with Dr. Joseph W. DeMocko and Shannon Smith. I went to that meeting prepared with documentation and expected to discuss the outstanding records, work-status documentation, billing/reimbursement documentation, and the approximately $4,498 lien. The meeting did not go as I expected. There were repeated interruptions and interactions that I experienced as disrespectful and confrontational. During the meeting, Dr. DeMocko became visibly angry, stood up, pointed toward me, and told me that I needed to take down my review. The length of time that he and Shannon Smith have been in service was also brought up. Years in service do not resolve the documentation questions I was raising. My concern was about the records and documentation I requested, what I received, what I did not receive, and the explanation for those discrepancies. BILLING AND REIMBURSEMENT DOCUMENTATION I also have concerns regarding the documentation reflecting approximately $4,498 in charges. There are services listed in the reimbursement documentation that I do not believe I received. I am not stating that the records prove fraud or any other conclusion. I am stating that I dispute the accuracy and completeness of the entries and believe they require explanation. I also question how the amount of services documented could have been performed within the short amount of time I was actually in the office for many of my visits. My visits were generally brief, and my interaction with Dr. DeMocko was limited in duration. Because the reimbursement documentation should correspond with services actually performed, I believe those entries warrant clarification.
