Been a fan of Nello's Mesa since 1994 when I was 11years old. It's crazy good. Incredibly consistent. Always friendly staff. Try the sausage - it's homemade and so tasty. Pizza, sandwiches, salads - all phenomenal. In the 90s they used to have a hot bacon dressing for their salads - it's a Midwest thing, and since we moved from Wisconsin and they had that, it was a taste of home...they should bring it back. Went searching for a chicago pizzeria on the net found Nellos got great reviews so tried it out. Simply fantastic thin crust pizza! Service excellent. Sauce well seasoned and topped with fresh mozzarella cheese. Sausage tasty and full of flavor. Our server brought us go cups to take our huge soft drinks home with us. Don't see that alot. We went last night at 6:30. No hostess. We stood around for five minutes and finally seated ourselves. We were not acknowledged AT ALL! We sat at the table for 25 minutes and the waitress walked by us at least 8 times. No acknowledgment, no eye contact. We literally got up and walked out. For years and years, Nello's has always satisfied with a tasty pie. Be it thick or thin, large or small, the portions and ratios of toppings to crust has always been consistent and on spot on, which puts Nello's among some of the tastiest pizza restaurants in the East Valley. My go to pizza choices typically lean towards the original crust, which is to say that it is deep dish pan style. Not quite Chicago style deep, but pretty darn close. The crust tends to be cooked to a lightly browned, nearly done consistency for most every pie made. I would say however, they tend to lean towards slightly under, rather than over, on the cook of their original crust. However, both styles of crust yield a pleasantly satisfying texture, thickness and flavor, and at least have some tooth to them that stands up well to the ingredients heaped on top. Another favorite is the house salad dressing. It certainly goes well with most any style of salad ordered, however it often times doubles as an extra bit of saucy flavor that somehow finds its way onto my slice of pizza. More often than not, I'll just put that slice of pizza nestled right up to the salad, all on the same plate, creating my own version of what west coasters do when they put their salad atop top their pizza. I can also say that the marinara sauce is very tasty and is good on the side for heaping on extra goodness. The service is certainly congenial, and prompt. I've really never had a bad experience in all of the times I've gone -whether it be a large party or small. Lunch and dinner you can't go wrong: sandwiches, salads, calzones and pizza's are all very tasty. There is a good selection of beer and wine, even local flavors on tap and in bottles too; there is something to complement your meal, if you're not sure, just ask - I find the staff very helpful. Both locations are often busy, and it's no surprise, because the food and service are quite good . . . and they've been doing it since the 80's, so there you go! This place was so delicious. First off the glasses they serve their drinks are in are huge, which is nice because you don't have to be waiting for a refill constantly. Their small salads were also huge and could easily be 2 meals or split with 2 people. I got the pesto Bianca pizza and it was so flavorful. The crust was great and not too much bread. Hmmm... I was super excited to try this place because it has wonderful reviews. I am so confused why it has good reviews because my pizza was so mediocre. The cheese and the crust were the same texture. I was expecting a tiny crunch with the crust but it was bouncy like a pillow, reminded me of school cafeteria. It was so not impressive. I have eaten at the Phoenix branch years ago and attended frequently. I always thought it was a ten, with excellent food and service. We did takeout. Our pizza was terrible. Little to no flavor, thin-crust was overcooked. Now I know why I ate at their Phoenix location. I will not return. read more

Nellos has the best pizza in the east valley, and is one of my favorite restaurants period. Great pizza, great beer selection, and great value. My second time here......this place is legit! I love the neighborhood bar vibe inside mixed with the old school italian eatery. This is NOT a 2 slices and a coke place folks.....be warned. It's a chicago style deep dish pizza. My 10 inch pizza was delicious and their sauce has a great garlic taste. Prepare to be blown away with a lot of great food! Nello's Pizza is a friendly, family-run neighborhood pizza shop. With their extensive menu, there was so much to choose from, and definitely something for everyone! Their food is perfect for sharing, as one pizza could feed the entire family. When we were here, we ordered the Tortellini Toss, which had adorable pieces of cheese tortellini, artichoke hearts (the love of my life), and the makings of a great Mediterranean salad. They also have a tomato-based house vinaigrette, would definitely recommend getting a salad, just for the dressing. As for pizzas, you can't go wrong with any of their specialty deep dish pizzas. When we were there, we go the Deluxe Combo, which comes with your classic combo toppings: the pepperoni, sausage, bell peppers, and more! Earlier this evening, I had an opportunity to sit down with some family at a well known "Chicago" pizza chain. And then someone asked if we had ever tried Nello's. I had never heard of this pizzeria but I am always willing to try a new restaurant. Even when they've been around for 33 years! I've reviewed a few pizza joints recently and they were decent. None of them earned more than four stars because I knew there were places like Nello's out there. And it was only a matter of time until I found one worthy of five stars. And it didn't hurt that there was a Cubs game on. Nello's is clearly more than a pizzeria, though. Just a glance at the menu will tell you that there are enough options to keep you happy if you want more than pizza. We started with the Mozzarella Platter which featured basil, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and banana peppers, with toasted Italian bread and a side of olive oil with Parmesan cheese.... Amazing! This could be an appetizer at a fine dining Italian restaurant. Our group couldn't decide on one or two large pizzas, so four, smaller customized pizzas were ordered. We all chose the pan style crust. This is a crust worthy of five stars without any toppings or sauce! For the record, I really like the pizza sauce here. It has a great tomato flavor with a heavy hint of garlic. And the Deluxe Combo is a solid choice because the Italian sausage used here is high quality stuff. As I noted about the plethora of pizza joints popping up everywhere, this fad will come and go. But it's clear from one visit, that Nello's ain't going anywhere! Oh yeah... Cubs win! Nothing beat's a Nello's Numero Uno on original crust (delicious sausage!) and Antipasto Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette or their tasty House dressing. The Deluxe Combo is another one of our favorites and we love the large drinks, especially the Cranberry Juice Cooler. Our first date was at Nello's 30 years ago and we continue to return even though we now live a half hour away. Lot's of good times/memories at this neighborhood family restaurant and whenever we have family/friends visiting from out of state Nello's is on the menu whether we dine in or take out. Service at times can be slow/forgetful but is always friendly and with a smile. If you come on Friday's or Saturday's arrive before 5:15, parking can be difficult. read more

I have been going to this Nello's since I moved to the valley. I have tried pretty much very pie they make and they are all delicious ! But I absolutely love their deluxe combo on thin or original deep dish. They even have gluten free crust! Great pasta dishes that are large enough to share. I love their homemade Italian sausage. How can this place have nearly five stars? The atmosphere is fine if you're looking for a casual, family friendly kind of restaurant. The service was fast and cordial, but the pizza left so much to be desired. We ordered two pizzas. One was a thin crust "Deluxe Combo" (pictured) which was passable, but nothing to write home about. The other was a "Pesto Bianca" with chicken added (pictured) which I almost sent back --- and I never send food back. The crust was burnt to a non-edible char; my teeth literally could not bite into it. The chicken (which I paid extra to have!!!) was dry beyond belief. It had a texture that made me think it was day-old chicken tossed onto a grill to merely reheat was had previously been overdone. First time...maybe the last time. Ordered Deluxe combo pizza and a dozen wings. The pizza is alright, but I do expect more as it is their specialty pizza, the taste is about the same as many other pizza place. The one dozen wings, I got all 12 drumsticks!!...where are the "wings"!! Come on...without sayimg a word...you should give the customer 6 wings and 6 drumsticks, ok!! The drumsticks is larger than many other places and is not dry....but it didn't have the favor on it (garlic and parmesan). I support local small business, hope it can improve a bit more. read more

Pizza and red wine! We got a large pizza and half carafe of house wine all for $25. The restaurant is cozy, full of friends and families that you can tell meet there regularly. Our seating was comfortable and the service was attentive. We got the margarita pizza, which was great, but we agreed to get a heavier topping next time to match the hearty crust. This is way up on my list of most loved places in the east valley and it brings back so many wonderful memories of times gone by in my life. The thin crust pizza here is the best I've had in the valley. The thick or deep dish is just okay it doesn't really do it for me to say the least. But boy are the flavors there when you order the thin crust. We always used to come here on Tuesdays to get the Tuesday take out special which apparently stopped. When we called today to go get the usual Tuesday deal to us the dead give away was when the man over the phone had asked us what kind of large soda we would like and when my boyfriend had asked if he meant to say 2 liter he said no. So now that they have taken away my Tuesday special I can tell you at this moment that the chances of us going to nellos after this are slim to none. I'm severely disappointed that they have no specials anymore but nothing lasts forever I guess. I have been eating at Nello's for the last 5 years and in the last 6 month when trying to place in order the person never seems to want to take my order, or they have an excuse of they ran out. After seeing reviews everywhere for Nello's I do have to say its definitely overrated. We had 3 different pizzas, 2 appetizers, and a sandwich to try a little of everything. Wings are supposedly baked twice however they were soggy. Garlic bread and garlic cheese bread were on point. Best out of the three pizza's we got was "The Skinny" The Italian beef sandwich tasted like the meat sat in a crock pot for 5 hours too long. This also took away all flavor. The place is quaint, it was pretty slow when we were there, maybe 20 people total in the place. The server was very friendly and he was able to help describe various options quite thoroughly. We did take our time in ordering, we'd not been before and wanted to go through the menu and make sure to get what we thought was a good first impression order. I ordered a deep dish pepperoni and sausage medium pie and my friend ordered a large bbq chicken pie. It took quite some time to come out, and yet on arrival was very warm but not hot. If you like your sausage to be large chunks like meatballs then the sausage will be great for you ... I prefer it more crumbled or smaller pieces, so the bites with sausage were overwhelmed by sausage taste and texture. Yet in Chicago style the pepperoni is below the cheese which really muted its flavor to insignificant. Get extra sauce because you'll want it if you ready the crust. It's not bad at all, just bland, so having sauce to dip it in makes it a better accompaniment. It's an end cap in a shopping strip, so there's plenty of parking. It's fairly easy to see in traffic and google maps directions seemed spot on. They have 15 beers on tap as well -sd stine bottled options and mixed drinks do you should be set on that end. If I go back I'll try the thin crust and see how I fare with that. All in all not a bad experience. Very friendly staff and competent pizza. I'm not really a Chicago guy, so maybe take my opinion lightly but I tried to be far in the facts of the experience. Maybe someday I'll also be entertaining in these reviews ... read more
