The Blind Pig Tap House - Beautiful Kabetogama Lake - Minnesota's hidden gem in the heart of Voyageurs National Park

Usually I find myself visiting restaurants, while traveling, based on Yelp and TripAdvisor reviews…read more However, after backpacking in Voyageurs National Park me and my fiancé were looking for the quickest option that looked halfway appealing. Coming from the Virginia-North Carolina border I'm partial towards NC style (vinegar based bbq) but I'm always looking to try BBQ from other parts of the country to compare. Judging from the sign outside this seemed like just the place and honestly I couldn't have been more pleased. This place blew away my expectations. While they don't lean towards a particular style (vinager, mustard, tomato, etc) they produce a incredibly well smoked and tender pulled pork. Easily some of the best I've ever had. The baked beans were fantastic and had my finances asking for the recipe. On top of all that, the beer selection was by far the best in the area. Due to COVID they had apparently only been open for a couple weeks but judging from the quality of the meal they will be open for years to come. Wanting to be totally honest in my review my girlfriend ordered a Hawaiian Pizza and wasn't super impressed. She compared it to a decent frozen pizza, so if you aren't interested in BBQ or good beer then this may not be your place. However I'm still giving this place 5 stars because if you are a pulled pork or brisket fan then this is a must try!

Excellent burgers & pizza - 4 stars!…read more FYI, it's called "Riley's Cannibal Junction", NOT "Riley's Fine Food & Drink". Don't judge a book by its cover. That's the first thing I have to say about this hole-in-the-wall bar & restaurant. When you find them, it feels like the middle of nowhere because there are no houses, cabins, or other businesses in sight. This is a totally casual, no-frills place with a hunting and fishing cabin type of vibe. Come as you are. Are you still wearing your hunting camo or your snowmobile suit? No problem. The burgers, pizzas, and soups are very good. The all-beef patties are the real deal. No soybean additives here. The owner makes an extra effort to get a higher grade ground beef. You can definitely taste the difference. The staff is very friendly and unpretentious. And the prices are remarkably reasonable (see photo). If you're interested in the history, they have a summary on the back of the menu and on the Facebook page. It all goes back to the 1950s and an eccentric husband & wife named Chester & Violet Guiles. The local kids started calling Chester "Cannibal Guiles". Once a week they'd go to Deer River to buy groceries in a horse drawn buckboard. One final note: I read a silly previous review accusing this place of being "disgustingly racist". I saw no evidence of racism whatsoever. In fact, there was a Native American gentleman cooking on the day I visited. I complimented him on the burgers and we had a nice chat. He's a nice dude. I don't know what kind of personal beef was going on at some point in the past, but this review is pretty bad...the worst type of ignorant, woke, race baiting & trolling with no evidence at all. Don't like 'em? Don't go there. This stupid review should really be removed or sidelined by Yelp. Anyway, enough time wasted on that topic... Stop by if you're in the area. Grab a brew and some grub. Thumbs up! -Maxx

Quality Food & Quality Service…read more This place has my recommendation based on one visit in Springtime to Northern Minnesota. A beautiful, rustic setting, excellent service, and the food was better than I expected. We ordered three sandwiches: Rueben, Italian Beef, Walleye, and also Homemade Lasagna. All delicious, all correctly made, and each was Huge! I had the Rueben but I'd order any of these next time I'm in the area. I can't forget to mention our waitservice - Nevaeh was fully attentive but not overpresent. Outstanding - she's young, but already a professional. It's pretty remote, but if you're anywhere around there this is the place to get grub! Check it out!

It's got a great vibe "Everybody at the bar gettin' tipsy" and such a nice selection to choose from. "Someone pour me up a double shot of whiskey. They know me and Jack Daniels got a history". The Viking bar is a large location with plenty of low top tables and a u shaped bar with high tops…read more There is also a stage for when they have live entertainment and one pool table. I tried the cheeseburger, fries, walleye fish fry, pizza and wings (both boneless and bone in). Everything was great other than the tartar sauce which tasted like pure mayonnaise. Our waitress was great the first night we came (on a Friday) but on Sunday there was one waitress also working the bar so she was not able to get to us in a timely manner for the entire night. Definitely a staple spot when we come throughout the year!

Believe me, I get it; I really do. However, when I go out, I always give a place at least 3 strikes until I stop going. Today was strike 3. The last 2 strikes happened within the last 12 months - all related to service/attentiveness of the staff. Strike 1 was when we were one of two tables in the place, and it took nearly 30 minutes to get food. Also had to go to the bar to get refills. Strike 2 was a couple months later - it was a bit busier (as there was a band) but it took waiting at a table for 15 minutes before going up to the bar to get our drinks. Owner was there but just "hangin' out". ABSOLUTELY unacceptable for the owner of a business. Food took nearly 40 minutes AFTER we ordered, and we had been there over 30 minutes before staff actually came to the table. Today, there was a good band that we came to see. Place was busy, so we were patient. Got our first round about 10 minutes after we came in, but next time staff showed up to our table was 20 minutes later. Took care of all the tables around us, but skipped over us (and one other table near us) several times. Had to make a couple of trips to the bar for refills during the show. Ordered deep fried appetizers at 20 minutes to 7. At 7:30 (50 minutes later), after seeing ALL THE OTHER TABLES THAT ORDERED FOOD GET SERVED (including 2 that were OUTDOORS) I called of the waitstaff over and asked for our bill. Staff asked if we had gotten our food and I said no. Disappeared for a couple minutes and came back and said "I can have them drop the order now and you'll have it soon..." I said no. They served sandwiches, pizzas, burgers and other fried stuff to at least 7 other tables that ordered after us. Oh, and the owner was there not doing much of anything that we could tell. Strike 3. Not spending money there anymore for any reason. The kicker? We know the owner and staff. Didn't even get a drink chip out of the deal (not that it would matter.) If it had been me, I'd have had the food made and packaged up to go, on the house. [In fact, I would have picked up the entire tab, but that's me. I've done it.] Certainly not worth a trip 30 minutes out to the middle of the woods. KS
