Wow wow wow! What a different, interesting place to visit.
We were on a cruise ship docked for a long day in Civitavecchia. We've been to Rome a couple of times and as it was a port intensive trip, we just didn't fancy the train ride into Rome, and came across Tarquinia in our research. It's only about 20 minutes by bus from Civitavecchia (but a COMPLETE PALAVER to find a place to buy a bus ticket - the return was easy). So the bus drops you off right by the tourist information centre in Tarquinia, and from there you can get a free shuttle to the necropoli (and through the town). Beware though that it doesn't run between around noon and 4pm. We were there at noon, and had to leave by around 4pm, so we walked to the tombs. It's about 20 minutes and not an unpleasant walk (but quite a bit uphill).
So anyway, the tombs! We paid our €6 - cash only (we didn't opt for the museum at an extra €2 as the time was too tight and the museum is back in town) and were given a map and set out. I didn't really know what to expect but it's really pretty special indeed. Be prepared to walk down steep and sometimes uneven steps to get to the tombs, but it's really very special indeed once you push the button for the light and see something that's literally thousands of years old.
Each tomb also has an information board, which details what's in each tomb as well as an image of what you're going to see - so if you're a bit tired after a stressful journey and a long walk up from the bus stop, you don't have to go to each one if you don't want to ;) The site isn't too large but on a warm, sunny day it is a bit tiring. There are beautiful views to the rear as well.
For a proper good value, unique, historical day out, you can't go wrong with the Necropoli Etrusca! read more
