We started with the popadoms and Chef's platter for 4 (onion bhajees, samosas, buckrawta parcels and kababs) - so tasty and a good selection to whet your appetite. Then we got the chicken korma, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, tarka dall and naan bread. Good flavor and not too spicy (at least not those dishes - I have heard that their dishes marked spicy are no joke!). Service was very friendly and attentive. They even called us a cab at the end of our meal! Would recommend it!

Thanks to all the Yelpers who provided recommendations!! The location is good, although I reckon there is a fortune to be made selling car parks in the area - seriously they are rare as rockinghorse droppings. Ambience was nice and the staff very accommodating - we were first sat next to a large very noisy group that made it tough for us as two of three at the table were hard of hearing, however the staff were very happy to shift us and we sat in a nice quiet corner. Wednesday night and they were pretty busy, so suggest booking for weekends. Cobra on tap, good wine list from around the world, and passable cocktails. :-D Poppadums and dips to start while we went through the enormous menu! Chefs Sizzler starter is great - bit of all the Tandoori meats, and we followed with Balti Chicken (of course) and two other curries which I could not name - a lamb and a prawn. All in all the meal was excellent, the naan bread possibly the best I have eaten, the roti thin and crispy, and all the curries well flavoured and spiced. Wish we were in town longer so we could do more of the menu! Recommended.

We'd just been to my nan's house and she LOVES to feed us all, so it wasn't going to be large dinner! Mrs D orders a couple of starters to have as main course, but for some reason the waiter brings it as her starter. "We'll bring you another couple to have as a main, you might as well keep those" So, Mrs D has the same two dishes for starters and main courses, a little unconventional but hey... She said they were average too. So Mrs D has 4 average dishes. Mine was quite nice, but when the bill arrived, you guessed it... They charged for both sets of starters! Overall, a bit underwhelming to be honest, I think I'll stick with my local.

It is about mid-range on price, but I've never been disappointed with the food or the service, which is why I keep returning. The food is very much the standard offerings you expect from an Indian restaurant. The taste is good though and the presentation and service is excellent. The place is always full, so book before you go or you will probably be disappointed. Many of the people eating here are Indian, which I think is a good sign that the food is authentic. The staff, often the manager, will usually come over to your table during the meal to say hello and check that everything is okay.

They've got a great Mon-Thurs dinner special where you can get poppadams & chutneys, a starter, a main, rice or naan, and a cup of tea or coffee for £9.95. I had a vegetable samosa as my starter and a chicken tikka jalfrezi w/ boiled rice for my main. The jalfrezi was DELICIOUS. Really hot and filled with fresh green chilis - this paired with the rice was absolutely the bee's knees! I used some of my friend's naan to sop up the leftover curry after all the chicken and veg were done. I highly recommend the jalfrezi! Service was prompt and polite. The place definitely lacks ambiance but it more than makes up for it with the amazing food. Alcohol is BYOB and there is NO corkage! The Standard is definitely the standard to which curry should be. Definitely the best and most memorable meal I've had in Birmingham.

In all honesty, the internal decor of the Standard is a little, well, bog-standard, especially given how flash some of the more modern, bechromed tandoori restaurants can be. That doesn't affect the food however, which is excellent, as is the service. The prices aren't bad either, which makes it three goods to one average. If you want to make your meal the focal point of your evening (for instance, if you're on a first date), then I'd say there are better Indian's in the area. If however, you're a bit drunk (or a bit skint) and want a really nice, well-priced balti. Then this is the place for you.

I've been there 4 times now and have always chosen something different I wasn't disappointed once. Conclusion: Go there and indulge in the excellent Bengali/Indian food they offer. Must-try especially for students because they get a poppadom, a starter, any kind of balti dish and rice/naan for £7.
