The prices seem ok to me not as cheap as I've seen (but then the quality is good) but in line with most other fabric stores I've visited and cheaper than some! I visited yesterday as every January they run a sale with 20% off, which makes the prices much more competitive. The staff at Hansons are knowledgable, friendly and helpful and don't treat you like an idiot (even when you feel like one, for asking 'silly' questions!) I bought my sewing machine from Hansons a couple of years ago and the lady in the sewing machine department was so helpful, showing me the different functions of the machines and really tailoring her suggestions to what she felt my need and experience was. I have since returned on a couple of occasions for fabric and sundries and I'm sure if it was closer to where I live, I'd be there all the time! My only criticism, which isn't even that really, is that they pack so much in there that one often has to tuck in for passing customers as the walkways are very narrow, often shoving rolls of fabric back in whilst they pass!

They do all sorts of ribbons, iron-on transfers, buttons, zips, cotton absolutely bloody anything to do with fabrics and sewing. All their fabrics is priced in metres, and they're quite cheap aswell. The only thing i hate about this shop is you cant quite get a buggy around the aisles.

The main minus is the fact that the aisles are extremely narrow, if you meet anyone coming the other way, you have to back up. On one occasion I thought, "I'll have a peek at the other shop and see what they have... or... I could just go straight to the yarn." So I went straight to the yarn! While the shop is small and makes for very cozy shopping when there are lots of customers (and I never see the place dead), they manage to pack a lot of items into the shop. I would almost say that they have more selection of colors and style of yarn than my local Hobbycraft! At the back is the yarn, careful if the door is shut as some customers/staff come through the back door as you are browsing. There are knitting needles, crochet hooks, and other various items hanging on the back wall/door as well. Some of the skeins are in cubbies, some are in baskets on the floor, and there is another shelf with bags of yarn. I thought at first I needed to ask to get into the bags, however, the staff are usually quite busy, so help yourself. In the area next to the yarn is fabric and in the center of the store is a table to measure and cut fabric. The front of the store seems to be more for buttons, needles, ribbons, and other sewing supplies. They do take credit cards if you are building your yarn stash, but there are cash machines nearby if you are just buying small items. Some of the staff are very friendly, others not so much, but they are helpful and efficient, which I think is more important. Although when one of the men that work at the store bagged up my yarn, he very kindly said, "If the colours are not correct, please come back and we will help." I like that as sometimes the dye lots are not the same or you are buying from memory. I haven't yet asked if they can special order yarn, but with the amount of business they do, I get the feeling that they may be able to help.

What a terrible shop, went in there several weeks ago to have some curtains altered and was told…read morethe manager was away for two weeks so were not doing any! Also on several times the shop was never open on time usually about 10.30 to 11am - should of been 9.30am, when I had to travel some distance this was not acceptable - no notice was ever put up to say why they were opening late. When I went back several weeks later to advise the the manager she was rude and said they do not need any more business as they are busy !. So don not use this shop as you get bad service.

Unprepossessing from the outside unless you are a fan of industrial architecture but once through the doors it's glorious fabrics galore. There are sections of dressmaking fabric, including patterns, lots and lots of upholstery fabric, strange fluorescent furry stuff for making strange fluorescent furry things (aliens?), sheer voiles for curtains and more more more! In my time I've been here to buy things to refurbish furniture, make fancy dress for the kids and our latest purchase is the complete kit for stitching our own ball gown - Vivienne Westwood is looking to her laurels!
