So, let me just say that I have a love-hate relationship with all Navy Exchanges. This one is no different. The Rota Navy Exchange is manned by Navy dependents, mainly wives and children of service members who despite their utter lack of customer service skills will probably never be fired because the hiring pool is so limited. Enjoy eavesdropping on the cashier's conversation with the other cashier about their most recent drinking binge over the weekend as if you weren't even standing there, and don't even think about rudely and thoughtlessly interrupting their conversation by asking for a gift certificate or a pack of cigarettes.
This NEX was stupidly designed. The mini mart area, or "video mart" as it has been nicknamed was intended to be the food court, but because of Spanish construction worker oversight the food court was not to be due to the sprinkler system never appropriately being installed. So, the Mini Mart is literally right next to the main store.
You cannot shop in the main store of the NEX or the Commissary if you are a retired military member. The SOFA agreement between Spain the US prohibits retirees from using their benefits in Spain. Bummer for some I suppose, but if you're retired and you're on the base in Spain you probably have some other DoD employment.
As always the selection blows. Yesterday's electronics at today's prices. Home goods selection leaves a lot to be desired. Somehow curtains and bed skirts don't rate high enough on the list of things that are important, but if you want a Swaroski Crystal vase or some hideous statue of a dancing couple it'll be there, gathering dust because no one ever buys that junk merchandise. As always the furniture is over sized (an important factor since the housing on base is so small) and of a poor selection. Enjoy shopping and settling for the best they have on offer if you need large furnishings.
The delivery rate the NEX charges are outrageous. $100 delivery fee if you live inside Rota or on the base in housing, more if you live in Peurto de Santa Maria or beyond. If you can stomach it, if you can delay your shopping urge and need for instant gratification, shopping on the Spanish economy or ordering online is so much better. And remember, if you can't ship it apobox.com will ship it for you for a fee. Stay away from the Rota NEX!!!! read more
