Came her for a seminar and it was different from what I have experienced in the past. They served food right before which was nice and served drinks after the seminar was over. Lots of students, teachers and staff from the lab attended. Seminar room is pretty big and I heard they do offer this place free to the public once a year. If you get a chance come on down. It's a great place to see wildlife in its natural habitat, enjoy a great view and get loaded with information about our ecosystem and studies that have been done or still underway.

This is a renowned research laboratory about halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey.They had a…read moresmaller older facility that was completely destroyed by the 1989 earthquake and so eventually rebuilt a better facility in a slightly safer spot on the site. It has some great displays, historical artifacts and and a fine library of their research projects. They also have classrooms for the courses they teach for a variety of marine biology majors of several CA State college campuses. We met the director and a library's graduate student assistant who gave us a tour of some of the facility and some personal history of the site including events surrounding the earthquake. Definitely worth a stop for the education on their research and the beauty of the site, especially if you are interested in marine biology or hope to inspire a student!

Unfortunately, I was transferred to Travis AFB for my twilight tour before retiring and was unable to complete the program. However, if I ever return to the Monterey Peninsula, I WILL finish and get my MATFL! BTW, it is now called Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (still MIIS). Middlebury College's Summer Language (SLANG) Program at its Vermont campus is THE BEST total immersion program in the World; I should know ... I was there in 1985 studying the third-year Russian course.

It is a small museum but an absolutely beautiful one worth visiting. As a birder, I loved the cases of taxidermied birds, one of the largest collections of this type on the West Coast with over 400 specimens. I was even more enchanted by the jade room full of jade pieces and artwork derived from right here on the Central Coast, the giant Grizzly Bear, the gorgeous nature field guide mural/artwork upstairs, and the imaginative Room of Wonder full of items that had long been stored in the Museum basement and now brought back to viewing public in artistic settings. This room is mesmerizing and hard to describe but you should definitely see it for yourself. Native Americans are included as well as Asian Americans in the different displays, which I appreciate and feel contributes to the holistic and unified way in which the natural history of our state is explained here. One of the highlights, though, was meeting Bill, a volunteer guide at the museum. He gave so many interesting facts, helped with cool photo ops, and conveyed his genuine love for nature and the community. He is the heart of this fine place. We hope to see him again! If you haven't been to the Natural History Museum, I highly recommend a visit. Locals can get in free.

Most business are family owned. You won't find many commercial businesses here. This city is known for the mission San Juan Bautista and also for the San Andreas fault line. It was right after I had flunked out of the Pre-Med curriculum at UC Davis as a result of too much partying my freshman year causing me to fall way behind in classes like O.Chem 1A and therefore not be able to pass O.Chem 1B or 1C. Also factoring into the mix was the fact that I didn't really want to go into medicine and be sucked into becoming a doctor for the next 12 years of my life. So I failed out of Davis and felt like a failure at the time, but it turned out to be the best thing for me. My parents had me meet with College Bound where they were incredibly helpful in assessing my strengths and weaknesses, as well as my interests and passions. I told them I had taken art during my year away in England and I've always enjoyed making birthday cards and drawing. So College Bound suggested I pursue Graphic Design. At the time there weren't a lot of kids going into graphic design and there were so many companies out there that needed design services. So I enrolled at Monterey Peninsula College and started taking design classes, then went to art school in S.F. and 10 years later... I'm practicing design and I really love what I do. I get the chance to make a difference and touch people's lives with pro bono work. I get to create for a living. I seriously don't know if I would have ended up here if it weren't for College Bound. Sometimes it's helpful to get a different perspective and give you that one little spark that puts everything in motion.

I guess she couldn't be bothered to respond to either my Yelp direct message or my email. She's not located in Monterey, she's in Middlebury College in Vermont. I still get messages from users asking me to explain a bit more about my experience at MIIS, and I am happy to answer. I encourage everyone to read the "not recommended" reviews at the bottom of this page; you'll find insightful commentary there. I also encourage you to read my original review: I share some insights on the MA TESOL program, more of which I can share a bit below. I get a few questions about the MANPTS degree, or the Nonproliferation/terrorism studies degree. If you already have a job which is sponsoring you to do this degree at MIIS, that's fine. The degree itself does not lead to any kind of career outcome, however; ONLY pursue this degree if you already have a job. The MA in Environmental Policy is a joke. It's the easiest degree at MIIS, and it's known colloquially as the "poster-making" degree because much of the course content involves making visual posters. You can do this if you really want a Master's degree, although honestly you can also get a Master's degree from a private for-profit university, and it will basically be the same thing. The T&I programs are the only successful programs at MIIS, and even to this day attract a good number of students. To my knowledge, it's one of the only programs (possibly THE only program? I might be wrong, please correct me if I am) in the US for translation/interpretation. The city of Monterey is small, isolated, and largely a tourist town, so there is no inherent reason for the country's premier interpretation school to be there. Why couldn't there be a program in NYC, the location of the United Nations? As bad as the MA TESOL program was before, it's even worse now. In an attempt to stay socially relevant in a changing economy, the program has doubled down on a bastardized version of what they call "social justice." In order to pass your courses, you need to find ways to pander to an upper-middle class white liberal audience by paying lip-service to contemporary popular social issues. You'll need to identify your gender pronouns, and create curricula that require students to understand white supremacy in the USA. For a fucking teaching English degree. The statistics on the MIIS career website are laughably false. 99% of all graduates are employed after graduating? Seriously? There's no way this kind of statistical misrepresentation can be legal. Given how expensive and niche the school's degrees are, your classmates are going to be trust fund babies, and the staff/faculty are painfully naive. It pains me to see men and women in their 40's who don't have an understanding of the labor market. The campus is locked in by gates due to safety reasons, so no trespassing while students are at school. The academics are great. The sports are good but could do a little better with more encouragement to join the teams. The campus is always clean and the bathrooms are somewhat clean. They have two fields and a lot of basketball courts including three tennis courts.
