Goat Plate
Icabob B.

This place is really over priced! The food was okay at best. All the meat was dry. You get so much rice and barely any meat. The goat plate was so expensive and it wasn't great. The ribs that I got weren't Haitian. (Haiti doesn't specialize in ribs) This is not authentic Haitian food. On top fo that there is not store at the mall, its a location where a bunch of restaursnt do to go orders. Not worth the drive not the price.

Phenomenal! You read that right. Downright phenomenal. It is flavorful home cooking that comes from the heart. I am so blessed I get to try these amazing dishes from such a talented and kind soul!! I will be back to edit this review after I finish every last bit of rice and stewed veggie/meat on this plate haha :)

Holy F! Mind blowingly delicious. Located upstairs in the Valley Swap Meet which is an unassuming place that I would have never entered if not by a recommendation from a Haitian friend of mine. Well worth it my friends and family run. We ordered the legume (like a crab stew), which was so savory and had so much depth in flavor. Djon djon rice was perfectly textured and sticky. Fried pork was delicious and if you like pickled vegetables, the onions that come with it are pickled and compliment the pork so well. Plantains & pikliz yummy mmm. Nothing greasy, just fresh and delightful. Seriously, if you want to go on a little vacation in your mouth, and step away into another dimension.. dine here. No frills & dope music vibes. Many compliments to the chef.

I gave this place a go because I love my Haitian foods. While everyone was super nice, when it comes to the foods nothing tastes good. I'm shocked it has so many 5 star reviews. I wouldn't trust these people who wrote those reviews to pick up my dog's food. First of all this restaurant put the salt in "Salt lake City", it's so salty that everything taste bitter. I support black businesses. Nonetheless, this is not it! I hope those folks who wrote those great reviews have great cardiologists. It's a hard pass for me

I had the Fried Goat. OMG what amazing flavors. Worth every penny. They are on the second floor in the swap meet. I will be here again!!!!

I honestly wish I had ordered more than two. The fresh juices were also a standout; the Pineapple Ginger and Hibiscus were both spot on. Even the imported ginger beer from Kingston was really good. The jerk wings were absolutely delicious, and those small bread rolls (similar to cornbread muffins) were super tasty. The peas and rice and the plantains were also on point. Now for the downsides, the oxtails were disappointing. They weren't very meaty, and at $35 a plate, I expected more than mostly bones. I did get one decent piece, but overall it didn't feel worth the price. The vegetables were also bland. Dessert was another letdown. The sweet potato pie wasn't sweet enough and had an overpowering nutmeg flavor. The cobbler was undercooked, the crust was raw and inedible, and the peaches tasted like they came straight from a can. Overall, a mixed experience, but I'd still come back for the patties, wings, and fresh juices.

Think Cara Cara, Perch and even neighborhood surrounding Bottega Louie in their infancy in LA That being said you are doing yourself a major disservice if you don't stop by and order GREAT Haitian food. What sets Haitian food apart from Caribbean food as a whole are the combination of spices and delectable flavors. Black Mushroom Rice (Djon Djon). Griot (Fried. Pork chunks). Think Cuban Masitas but with much more flavor Banan Peze (Fried Plantains. But with more flavor than the tostones you may be used to) The food here is well prepared and authentically Haitian. You want good Caribbean food come here. No lie. It's located in an historic building. Original, yes old red leather seats, vintage ceiling fans as well as old wooden tables. But it provides a charm and a window to the heyday of the area. This visit I ordered their Lomo Salteado and the meat was extremely rubbery and unpleasant. My daughter ordered their chicken empanadas and it was a hard no for her too. When we were ready to close out, I asked the waiter as he was clearing some things on our table, if he could bring some to-go boxes when he had a moment for things we didn't finish so we could take them home. He had a butter knife in his hands and threw it onto the table. Rough day I guess. I personally would not come here myself, but continue to do so for my wife. Always love checking out new foodtrucks!…read more We got a chance to head out to Encino to see foodtrucks, and here is Tropical Food Truck. They say they had only been open for a few months, so I commend the bravery it takes to open a foodtruck in today's market. The name of the truck may mislead some, but just know that they serve Islands/Jamaican food. The menu mainly consists of entrée plates, with a couple of sandwiches, plus their daily specials menu. I wasn't in the mood for a large plated meal, so I opted to check out their specials menu, which listed Jamaican Beef Tacos. This was two tacos with ground beef, pico de gallo, salsa, and a plantain slice. The tacos clearly reminded me of a typical taco I have had elsewhere. Overall, not impressed; however, the plantain gives it that island feel, and gave the tacos that bit of sweetness that otherwise would've just left me with normal tacos. Tropical has a long ways to go. Being a new foodtruck, I give them the benefit of the doubt. Being so far from home though, it may be a while before I can give them another try.

It's not "wrapped" like the fancy gourmet trucks around. At first I thought it was a regular taco truck. But no, they serve Caribbean food. Actually, I'm almost wondering if it's Haitian food they were serving. Or maybe it was Jamaican? Oh hell, I guess Caribbean is as good as a descriptor as any. I had the goat stew which was very tender. I really wanted to get the oxtail but didn't know if I was going to get a bunch of bones and not much meat. They let me sample it and I knew I should get it next time though. I really liked the plantains and rice as well. Grab a ginger brew and you're all set.

I am so happy I did! I got a small plate of oxtail with peas and rice, plantains and cabbage. Absolutely delicious! The oxtail were on the small side but for a lunch plate, I think it was fine. The peas and rice were seasoned well, and had the oxtail sauce poured on it. Cabbage with carrots were also very good. The small plate that was around $25 was big enough for two servings. I also got the pineapple ginger! Very refreshing and went well with my lunch. Your order over the counter and the food is served in a to-go box. The dining area is cozy, lots of shaded sunlight coming in from the front window. Reggae was playing in the background. The women who worked behind the counter were nice. I've only had jerk chicken here and the last time was over 10 years ago, so I did not remember it. Ordering it today with a girlfriend did not instill confidence that the other dishes offered here would be great. The jerk chicken plate in the large size that we shared came with cabbage salad and some form of Jamaican dirty rice. The chicken was cooked appropriately, smoky and dry, with a pleasant looking brown skin, but that wonderful scotch bonnet glaze and sauce that we all expect atop good jerk chicken was sorely missing... Just a very little bit was glazed to the skin. The rice was smoky and had the nice salt flavor one would expect of a dirty rice or a Jamaican rice but it was a little one-dimensional. The cabbage was rather flavorless but had nice crunch. I prefer plantains that are sweet and these were not. There was no festival bread or anything extra to go with the meal. At $36 for the large platter? Not worth it.
