Dreadful. Ladders were delivered one and a half days late, costing me tradesman pay. Phones unanswered for hours. Finally customer service said they'd arrange am delivery next day but delivery driver said no such instruction had been given. Ladders arrived at 2 30pm and weren't even what was ordered.Collection was days after agreement, causing more stress. Complaint took 3 weeks to reply to and basically couldn't care less. I hired from Mammoth in Manchester but seemingly they're owned by National Hire. Rude and rubbish company. I'd give zero stars if possible. AVOID! read more

Complete set of jokers! do not use! Hired a plate compactor that turned up and worked properly for 15 mins and then had multiple issues. 3 unanswered emails and 2 website chats later and things still were not any better. They also delivered with barely any fuel when I had paid for a full tank so I then had to organise transport the following day to go get fuel. Filled it up and then 10 mins later stopped working properly. they wont refund anything but the fuel it was supposed to have been delivered with even though i know have a jerry can full of fuel and also filled it up for them with fuel! Truly shocking. They are nothing more than a middle man to the actual equipment rental company. They do not answer the phone, any emails or their web chat. Complete waste of time and basically just broker the deal with a local rental company near you and take a handling fee for doing nothing. Result is zero communication with the equipment provider as you don't have a contract with them (can't blame them) and zero response from National Tool Hire. Don't use this guy! read more

This is a broken company. It has no end to end process, if you order and pay there no guarantee you get your tools, no customer service to support. Avoid at all costs you will waste a lot of time and need to get a refund through your bank after payment and no tools. read more

Hired a stump grinder from them. They advertised 2, the mini and the HEAVY-DUTY. As the price difference was £15 I went for the heavy duty. I hired it for 2 days. The description on their website states "..make light work of all old stumps, including large ones". I needed to remove about 15 stumps from felled beech hedgerow. Largest being about 20cm. the machine struggled taking maybe 30 mins on each stump. So the description is very misleading. Also it advertises "Reduced Weight, Walk Behind Design" whereas the mini grinder does not. I assumed this meant it was self-propelled. When the item was delivered, I asked the driver if it was self-propelled and he said yes. I asked as the stumps were up an incline in our adjacent field and would have asked him to drop off there. When I came to use it I soon found out it is not self-propelled. In fact due to the extreme weight, it is difficult to move at all, especially on rough ground uphill. I realise they did not state it was self-propelled but nevertheless their description is misleading and worth pointing out to anyone considering hiring this machine if they are not very fit. Lastly, having hired for 2 days they sent someone to collect the following day in the morning. Luckily, I had finished all the work. I contacted them regarding the poor experience and hoped they would offer some recompense but they took over a week to tell me they would offer only the refund for the difference between one and two days hire. I found the whole experience very frustrating and would not only never use this company again but would urge others not to use them either. Best to find a local company who can advise on the best machine for the job. read more

Nobody showed up on that day and nobody reached out to me via Email or Phone. I tried reaching them but nobody picked up. On Tuesday! (Three days after the agreed pickup date) someone showed up at my door to pick the tool up, while I was gone. I have then received an additional cost email of GBP 40 (!) (over 50% of the total hire), saying that their "T&C states that the pickup date can be 1-5 days from the agreed pickup date" This comes close to a scam if you ask me. Absolutely terrible company. I wanted ELEVEN days for the tool to be collected, which meant taking time off work to be at home for 6 working days and each time they didn't collect. No apologies, no refunds just rude, obnoxious staff. They state in their 15 page T&Cs that collection can happen 1-5 working days from the requested date, this info should be highlighted when purchasing. Waste of time. Ordered a mixer and wacker plate. Paid extra for "guaranteed before 12pm". Sat here at 2pm, 5 stops away and a wasted day. "Guaranteed" means they garantee it arives before 12pm. Absolutely shocking service from these charlatans. Ordered a sander for hire at 9am this morning and paid for same day collection for 2 days hire. They are impossible to deal with, unhelpful and unwilling to actually do anything. Many calls to them to find out where our same day collection was going to be from and when, only to receive a message 7hrs later at 4pm to say a sander had been allocated. Called the hire firm and they told us they were shutting in 5mins and we will have to collect tomorrow morning. Absolutely livid is beyond words. We have wasted a day now already but the hire firm also told us we have to return the sander the same day. We ordered and paid for 2days hire. Collect Monday, return Wednesday. Not same day collect & return. This is not acceptable. We have had to spend all day on the phone begging these idiots to do their job. Finally after hours wasted we "may" be offered a full refund (on hold at 17:12pm...probably going to get cut off for the last and final time today) you get fobbed off, cut off, told they will call you back, basically we've been lied to all day and I'm not holding my breath about a refund as it seems like a very convoluted process designed to suck you will to live right out of you, but please beware and put your money else where. It may be too late for me and will have to kiss goodbye to my £250. This is a company who make it seem like they have lots of local branches with good availability of equipment with same day delivery & collection but they are just ringing round other hire companies and offering them the job as a brokerage. I could have (should have) done that myself this morning, picked up the sander & done the job in all this time. Never will I use this company again. Disgusting. DON'T USE THIS COMPANY if you want to guarantee getting what you hire when you need it. Instead go direct to a hire shop - don't go through this leech of a company who just acts as a middle-man for actual hire shops and is highly incompetent even at that. Two weeks in advance I booked an extended length pallet truck (quite rare) to move some 600kg pallets of windows tomorrow, it was all confirmed by email and I phoned at 0830 this morning to find out when it would be arriving and was told it was on its way; when I phoned again at 1400 to chase I was told they should never have taken the booking but they could probably get one for Tuesday which is no good. Windows arrive on long pallets (which have to be moved lengthways due to space constraints) tomorrow morning just before a major storm but I have nothing to move them with to stop them being damaged as it was too late to find an alternative. In short this outfit are SCAMMERS and will cost you money if you rely on them for your business. read more

Do not use this company! I paid upfront to hire equipment and the day before I was contacted to say I would have to travel to another depot to collect this equipment, if I still wanted it. Having planned and arranged for the equipment to be available at the local depot it was impractical for me to travel some distance to get it elsewhere. They refused to help me in anyway and were completely uninterested and showed complete indifference to my situation. Not surprisingly I'm still waiting to have my money returned. They sub the hire out to other local shops - not a problem in its self the outlet was excellent National tool hire was shocking and has terrible Customer service. A hire booked nearly three weeks ago for delivery was confirmed, Materials all ordered and delivered. 7.38am on the morning delivery is not happening must be collected from a different branch to the one ordered from. No one answering phone at the call centre, cut me off after 1hr on hold. Web chat just as bad, 3 different people passed me on when they realised it was a complaint. Finally arranged transport at great inconvenience so I could collect the tools I required. Went to the alternate address, no order had been received from National Tool hire to rent the goods on my behalf. Also no deliveries have been taking place by them for the last 6 weeks!!!!! National we're fully aware of this. They should not advertise something they can't provide. WORST SERVICE EVER! AVOID AT ANY COST! I see not only here but also on Yelp and other pages, that people have experienced the same. Booked a tool, wasn't in for 5 Minutes, then in this time apparently somebody was at the door, so I called them straight away to come back with the driver, it was refused, I needed the tool so I could pick it up from a town next to it, I thought ok let it be that way, but it is not National Tool Hire just a different company where you actually get the tools from, but then the fun starts, they charged me over £40 to give me the tool... Rip off number 1, then the following day I wanted to use the tool and it was not working, then I phoned them straight away but the only thing they told me sorry and it is Saturday we can't do anything for you... Shocking service... Then I told them on Monday you will pick up the tools so what I am actually paying for? They said I will get a refund, showed the driver on Monday what was going on, said yeah it is faulty and reported that again to the depot. So after two weeks of showing proof of my calls, video of the faulty tool, now I won't get a refund and they blame me for damaging the tool, absolute joke, from the beginning to the end, avoid it if you can, there are many other companies which are reliable! read more

Awful terrible company. If i could give no stars I would. Customer service very bad, online staff very bad. Hired some ladders you are expected to wait in for five days for them to collect. Apparently you dont have a life just have to wait for them to turn up. Was promised three days when they said they would collect. Never turned up and eventually got a number from one of the staff so I could chase it myself. Phoned hire base who said national tool hire had not been in touch and he came straight away. Will never use this useful company ever again. Cannot even send a email of complaint to the head office as cannot find an address. Its probably wise on there part as they would get lots.
