We decided to try out NJB (Huntington Beach chapter) based on some recommendations from friends. Note: most of them tried it summer/winter season when I guess there's more participants and more volunteer help. However, the spring season for the Rookie division (K-1, 5-7 year olds) was super disorganized from the start and it hasn't gotten better after numerous parents bringing up concerns throughout the season with Coach Dennis who happens to be the founder of NJB too. This has been the worst sports league we have ever joined! 1) They shouldn't have 5-7 year olds play together and if they do, they should divide the teams equally by skill level but that wasn't the case. One team had much taller, more experienced players that would often dominate during scrimmages. Some of the younger ones would get upset, feeling discouraged which isn't a good start when introducing a sport. 2) The league should provide more coaching for basics and fundamentals as it was the first time for some of the kids playing. That being said, all practices are run by parents who volunteer to coach including some who reluctantly did so. Sadly, they are not given any instruction on drills so it's up to them how they want to structure practices. This happened the first time where the paid coaches just watched the volunteer coaches figure out how to coach the kids without giving them any guidance. After complaints, Dennis told us from week 2 week, we would have someone professionally give our kids instruction the first 30 minutes, then scrimmage the last 30 minutes but sadly that only seemed to happen 3x. The paid referees were supposed to come for all the scrimmages/games, but didn't. We had parent volunteers step in with some of the weekend scrimmages/games and referee too when no professional from the league showed up. This was so unprofessional. 3) Game times were sometimes changed 1-3 days prior to the actual game or from a Sunday to Saturday. One weekend we weren't suppose to have a game, then we were emailed that same week that we would have one. 4) Not all updated games have been emailed out. So some parents downloaded the NJB app (which only some knew about) and said that was more updated on there, but that still didnt show all the upcoming games. 5) Rookie division plays with 8 feet (vs 10 feet hoop). We found out in order to have practice with 8 feet hoops, we have to pay additional rental fees to practice at local schools that have them. When asked if we get a partial/refund, Dennis flat out said "no" because everything was done as promised, which wasn't. If there are too many kids and not enough head coaches or you don't sign up to be a head coach, some old, rude NJB guy will berate all the parents and tell them their kids can't be on a team. That was our first impression at the initial NJB meeting. My question to him should have been "how quickly do we get our refund?!!". But we went through with it anyways and some parent begrudgingly volunteered to coach. Side note: if you aren't a head coach and only an assistant coach, you don't get your money back when you pay the fee to opt out of coaching. NJB is a step above a city league. Our team parent was fantastic and comms were great with practice and game times. That's on the parents, NOT NJB. Also, the refs were fine. It's the parents of kids that didn't volunteer to coach that were mostly arguing with the refs. Like, they are 8-11 years old and clearly don't play organized ball. What's the point to argue with a ref?!! So come into it knowing it's NOT club basketball and mostly parent run and don't expect too much. read more

We signed our son up for the NJB spring basketball season and were very disappointed with the experience. The league felt extremely unorganized from start to finish. Communication was poor, schedules constantly changed, and there didn't seem to be much structure in place. The coaching was another major issue. There did not seem to be proper coaching in place, and most of the coaching was done by volunteer parents who did not appear to receive any training, courses, or clear instructions from the league. As a result, practices and games often lacked structure and player development. We also tried reaching out to the league director by email to express our concerns, but nothing changed and our concerns did not seem to be taken seriously. Overall, this league did not meet our expectations, and we would not sign up again. read more

I could provide you how other leagues work the communication that I'm having with other league currently is 10 times that of your leg. It wasn't that the other team didn't arrive on time and you're sitting there. Gaslighting me on yelp. It was that you guys scheduled people wrong in addition to that you do not provide anybody in Placentia with practice time for their children, which was agreed upon so you violated the contract you did not provide services to my child. My son has played in multiple leagues and very dissapointed that they would have a coach in LAKE FOREST NJB ( Parent coaching) take time out of there life to have a fair draft and then when a coach complains because he drafted badly. One of the worst basketball league of all time. They don't adhere to the age requirement for their league. They would allow 4th and 5th grader to play in the 3rd grader league. They glorified winners who was not even qualify as a winner. Especially Chino Valley admin, they are really bad in every spectrum. Don't they know that you can only cheat so much? By the time real life takes over, bro there is no more cheating and your kids will be losers because they can't cheat in real life anymore with the help of their parents... This is by far one of the worst leagues my child has participated in. the placentia league or yorba linda There is little to no communication, referees are often missing, and game times are constantly changed. There are no organized practices to help the kids learn the game or how to play respectfully with one another, which results in total chaos. My son has played in other leagues, including OGP and Shoreline, and both are miles ahead of NJB in terms of organization, safety, and overall management. Based on just the first two games, NJB PCH has clearly gone downhill, particularly in the rookie division, which feels like a blatant money grab. Paying $300 for this level of execution is unacceptable. In just two games, we have experienced no referees, children being moved to play outside in cold, foggy, misty conditions due to scheduling conflicts, and slippery courts that posed a clear safety hazard. It is incredibly disappointing that these issues are happening so early in the season. If this is the standard only two games in, I have serious concerns about the remainder of the league. Parents deserve far better organization, safety standards, and value for their money. I would strongly urge families to read recent reviews and think carefully before signing up. read more

I don't usually post reviews on Yelp, but I feel compelled to share this experience to warn other parents. This league is extremely disorganized, and trying to get in contact with anyone for help or clarification is nearly impossible. There is little to no structure, and as a result, my child has had a very negative experience playing here. When issues are raised, accountability is lacking. Instead of addressing concerns, responses--when you can get one--often feel dismissive and shift blame back onto the parents. No one seems willing to take responsibility for the ongoing confusion and poor organization that this league creates. Overall, the lack of communication, structure, and leadership makes this a frustrating experience for both parents and kids. I would not recommend this league to anyone. TLDR: Today's game was completely unacceptable for the NJB Rookie League at Walker Middle School and COMPROMISED THE SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN. There were no referees, the hoop attachments did not fit appropriately and one could not be used because it kept falling and could have easily fallen posing a safety hazard to the children, score keepers were completely disinterested, unprofessional, and had earbuds in their ears the whole time. I am writing on here because I've seen reviews stating that emails and calls go unanswered and I would like to have NJB be accountable for the safety hazard that was at today's game. I understand the purpose of Rookie League is for sportsmanship and a general intro of basketball to young children and understand that emphasis is placed on introducing basics to the children and providing a fun and safe environment but today's game was unacceptable. The three highlights of today (which I have included in my email) 1. There were no referees present for the game and this was not disclosed to either team at any point. This resulted in parents and coaches having to referee. 2. The attachments for the hoops to lower the hoops for the children were not safe and did not fit appropriately and therefore one could not be used. One in particular kept falling and could have easily fallen on one of the children - something that is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE and compromises the safety of the children. As we did not trust the other attachment, a parent stood under the hoop the whole game in case it fell and to be ready to catch it before it hit a child. 3. The "staff" who were score keeping were disinterested in the game - often missing stopping and starting time appropriately, and had ear buds in their ears the whole game. They even shaved off time from the game because the game was started late (again, due to there being no referees and the hoops not fitting appropriately.) I understand that this is the youngest league, the kids ultimately are there for sportsmanship and fun. But as paying customers ($300 for 8 weeks), it is expected that the basics of SAFETY and an appropriate basketball environment are provided for the kids. Again, this is very disappointing as this has never been my experience with NJB since I first was involved with the league 20 years ago. Would really like to see Cypress NJB improve. I will update this review if in case conditions improve. I would like to note that this was only our experience at Walker Junior High in particular. Last week at La Mirada had a much better environment and what you would expect from NJB. 1 star because the children do enjoy themselves and it is nice seeing them be able to play with other children. read more

This review is for the Orange/Villa Park league. I have a special place in my heart for NJB as I played for this very same league growing up. This is our 2nd experience with NJB, one son is on a team and the other is in rookie league. In my opinion rookie league is a bit of a waste of time, they spend half the time doing 'clinic' and practicing a lot of things that aren't fundamental skills which is what little kids need. And the other half doing a scrimmage. I could have had my rookie league play elsewhere for probably half the price, it's over priced for what it is, it's a lot of kids to be managed at once, and the organization and communication for the league is terrible. My older son we have a great coach that has worked hard to find us other places to practice because apparently our registration fees only pay for half of the court time from November-December and if we want court time after we have to pay for it, and it isn't cheap, we also only get half courts there which is fine but not really worth it for the price especially since the facility is closed for any holiday breaks so we wouldn't even be able to practice as much. We play a lot of soccer and basketball is already significantly more expensive to register but we are learning doesn't even cover everything. Overall the league organization and communication has been terrible for both rookie league and my 3rd graders team, it's been difficult to get our balls that are part of our registration fees, we find out with a day or two notice about meetings that they want people to attend, I don't even know when my rookie leagues schedule is because they only told us the times for the first 2 weeks. I try to be forgiving as often these are run by volunteers but it's hard to create a good environment for teams if the league communication is so poor. Hopefully things improve and it's a super off year. I'd give it 1 star but our experience with our personal team has been positive so I'll give it 2. FYI The league did a promo of giving out prizes for people leaving a review so keep that in mind when reading these reviews. Also each chapter should really have their own Yelp page, it would give a much more accurate view of experiences for people. read more

Kids basketball league during winter season was perfect amount of commitment. Definitely kept us busy and active but didnt take away all our free time. Kids enjoyed staying physical indoors and I enjoyed coaching to also stay physically active Staff are very helpful and transparent with coaching tools, fundraisers, and special events. read more

I've noticed the refs tend to cater to the teams who have flashy jerseys and established coaching. I witnessed last week, my son's team get 9 shooting fouls called against them, while the opposing team didn't get one called on them. Our team barely won 13-12, every point the opposing team scored was from fouling. After the game, our coach said "yeah we figured it'd be that way, we are a newer team." If that's the case, and this league favors, then this is the last time I place my child in this organization. Ridiculous we pay the same amount as other teams but yet they get better treatment. And , please hire better refs who actually know the rules of basketball, games are damn near unbearable to watch read more

Both my 9 year old Daughter and 11 Year old son have been playing for NJB for a couple of years, it has been an amazing experience since the beginning, we love NJB because it allows the kids and a young age to learn the game of basketball, as they get better and develop they are able to move up into BYT and eventually the Stars program for the higher level competition. The development of my kids has been amazing. I do see other negative reviews here, and one thing I can say is the NJB League is a great starting program to learn the game that also offers higher level competition if your child is ready for it. read more

FIRST AND FOREMOST... Anyone considering this league don't be fooled by their star rating. Taking a closer examination at their account you will see that Almost all of their positive reviews were submitted between December 16th to December 20th, 2024. That's because previously their bad reviews largely outweighed their positive reviews. So instead of addressing the obvious problems with their organization they instead spent their time running a campaign (and using burner accounts) to pump up their numbers to deceive the public. This is because they have a track record of not fulfilling their obligations, whether that is providing the proper support for game days, communicating with participant's concerns, and or taking serious the responsibility that comes with organizing youth sports. In our specific situation the league did not take care to organize the teams in a way that was fair. What happened was that they took all the kids from my sons school and grade and placed them on one team, and placed him alone on another team (an oversight potentially, which is totally understandable). This absolutely crushed our son and he couldn't understand why he couldn't be on a team with any of his classmates. We spoke with Loretta from The Capo Dana Chapter and she assured us that she would try to find a solution. We were ready to hear that a solution might not be possible and be given other options, but instead we never heard from her again. We tried repeatedly to get back in contact and have been actively ignored by the whole organization. All we want at this point is a refund and to go about our way and move on from this horrible experience. But NJB is too busy trying to deceive the public rather than do the right thing... or anything for that matter. I would highly suggest if you have other options for Basketball leagues, you go elsewhere. A quick look at the reviews, which up until December 16th, 2024 were mostly negative, you will see this behavior is habitual. read more

NJB Tustin is very poorly managed. They are late at communicating to the coaches and players. They do not respond to emails; I'm still not even sure who runs this organization in Tustin. They took $20 coaches fee but then did not use those individuals as coaches nor was it refunded. I know of 3 people this happened to during last Winter season. They don't guarantee practice time in the gym, and even then, parents have to pay for that gym time. The good news is that my child enjoys basketball and connects with the coaches and teammates. To say we've been extremely disappointed with NJB's Dana-Capo chapter this winter season would be an understatement. After registering our son in October and carefully following all instructions--we found out just days before the season started that he was assigned to a team with no friends or classmates while all the other boys from his grade at his school were placed together on another team. When we contacted the league to address this, we were assured the issue would be resolved quickly and they'd get back to us within a day, but follow-up was nonexistent and instead NJB ignored our follow ups. Multiple calls and emails went unanswered, and their promises to get back to us were not kept. This lack of communication and accountability is incredibly frustrating, especially when dealing with young children for whom the social aspect is such a big part of the experience. It's clear NJB fell short in ensuring a fair and inclusive process, and their continued avoidance of the issue has only made matters worse. At this point we've given up on a scenario that allows our child to play and feel included, and have repeatedly asked for a refund... which has also gone ignored. We hope future seasons are better managed to prevent this kind of disappointment for other families. read more

NJB here in Fullerton, gives our son the competitive playing he needs to advance as a player as he's heading into H.S. No other organization in our community has this and we've played in them all. His coach has proven to be great year after year with getting the team ready and supporting the players.
