Having said that, I have definitely seen an increase of art murals in the short time I have lived here and Starland Mural Project (SMP), organized by the owner of Starlandia Supply is trying to do just that. To increase the accessibility and number of public murals, primarily in the Starland District. SMP's goal is to create eight new murals, in eight weeks by eight local artists on the walls of the old Starland Dairy, located on the corner of Bull Street and 41st Street. The murals will be up for only about a year, while the Starland Dairy completes its makeover. SMP seeks sponsors and donations to reach a $15,000 fundraising goal to be able to compensate the artists for their work at a fair and decent wage. You may recognize some of the participating artists: - Amiri Geuka Farris: he's done murals at the Savannah Children's Museum - Tyriq Maxwell - Jose Ray: we saw him working on the mural during our visit. Always cool to meet and watch an artist in action. - Jon Witzky - Xavier Hutchins - Kevin Bongang - Dana Richardson - Juliana Lupacchino: She is also known by the name of Ju Lu and her murals are in Starland Yard, as well as various prints on items around the city. She has a fun and playful style to her art and I can recognize it immediately! My kids and I stopped by to see the progress of the murals and as of this writing (week of Thanksgiving 2019), some of the murals seem incomplete. We saw and met Jose Ray on site, finishing up his mural and he said that all the artists were trying to finish by the "First Friday in Starland" as an unofficial deadline. So needless to say, the pics I've attached is the "work in progress". Love hunting for art murals and there is a gold mine of them, 8 to be exact, that can be found on Bull and 41st Street. If you ever go to downtown St. Pete, FL, you can actually take a tour of all of the beautiful murals everywhere, a walking tour and a biking tour. Back to this local mural project, I love the color and the expression. My doggie loves to take pics next to them too. Well, he doesn't seem to mind as you can tell from the pics lol! Check it out! They are not far from Starland yard which is a food truck park(which is cool to see in Savannah) and down the street from Back in the day Bakery. One of these days when I visit again I'll check it out.

It marks the center of the town he helped shape over nearly forty years of public service. Myers joined the Town Council in 1965 and became mayor in 1972 after the death of Mayor Allan Luke. He served ten consecutive terms before retiring in 2011. Under his leadership, Summerville grew from a small town of 3,000 to a thriving community of more than 45,000. The memorial includes a bas relief of the mayor and a plaque listing his achievements. It reads, in part, "Mayor Berlin G. Myers. A Lifetime of Service. To Church, to Country and to Community." It notes his birth in Knightsville in 1917, his military service during World War II including landing on Normandy Beach, and his founding of the Berlin G. Myers Lumber Corporation in 1939. I walked to several (the map doesn't feel to scale) & walked back to others that weren't listed in the blown up section, and yet- they were so close! A few you need to drive to (realistically). I didn't see them all, but now I really want to go back and explore more! If it didn't storm, with tornado threats... lol, I wouldn't hinted them all down! John went and found ice cream while I roamed. The temps dropped 15 degrees in less than an hour! I went from sweater to coat & I'm grateful i always keep layers in the car! Plus, the rain coat came in handy too. Chase the magic, embrace the art and beauty of these trees.

Perfectly appropriate setting for this monument, Denmark Vesey (1767-1822) was a freedman (after…read morepurchasing his freedom at age 32) and became helped found the African Methodist Episcopal Church which became the second-largest AME congregation in the US. In 1822, he was alleged to be part of a plan for a major slave revolt that would have had the rebelling slaves kill their masters. Convicted by a secret court, he and several others were executed in Charleston despite no confession and while proclaiming their innocence. Today this monument stands in the park that was once the property of the largest slaveholder in South Carolina, a former Civil War general. He stands on a tall pedestal (that's hard to read), holding a bible under his left arm and a bag of carpentry tools (he was a carpenter by trade) in his right hand. This sculpture of a whale with her calf is located just outside the fun zone pool in Neptune Park…read more It is very clearly labeled not to be climbed on but some boy decided he needed to show off to his buddies. Fortunately, he managed not to fall off and hurt humself. The large concrete artwork is a North Atlantic Right Whale and the plaque nearby indicates that in February 1984, an expedition from St. Simons Island discovered a calving ground nearby.
