We were initially attracted to them precisely because they operate as a team - as my dad once told me "a marriage counselor either takes sides or is ineffective". The very first time we met, one of the first things they told us was that they had no idea whether or not they could save our relationship (nor whether it was worth saving), but that if we worked with them, we would understand what went wrong - and help to ensure we didn't make the same mistakes in the future. One of the first exercises they offered to us was a list of questions to ask your partner BEFORE getting married - most of the items (which dealt with very basic beliefs) had never occurred to us, but were clearly important to determining whether or not there was a fundamental incompatibility with your partner. This exercise alone, if taught to people embarking on their first mature relationships, would eliminate a phenomenal degree of heartbreak in the world. As other reviewers have mentioned, Douglas and Olivia are a joy to speak with (sessions only rarely "feel like counselling"). Their manner and personalities encourage open and honest communication, and facilitate difficult or sensitive discussions to a frankly amazing degree. Dr. Pickar basically observed our children with each parent, assessing how each of us was with our children. His behavior with each of our two children was that of a school principal, a bit distant, but chuckling when our then pre schooler said she had candy bars in her bedroom "for company" as though she were a society hostess from the fifties. He was kind, but unemotional and objective. Our children were very comfortable with him despite being very young and having been through quite a bit. Contrary to what someone else said, he also completed the nearly ninety page, very well written report in record time-mere months-something the court social worker had very much requested. His report cited specific incidents and specific issues that drew him to reach his ultimate conclusion-giving me full custody. I really need to wonder about those giving Dr. Pickar such negative reviews; probably the evaluation did not go as they anticipated. Dr. Pickar is not warm and fuzzy; he is not your uncle dressing as Santa on Christmas Eve. He is a professional psychologist, very well trained and experienced, with a job to do-and he does it.

Ben provided me with the tools to figure it out on my own teaching me perseverance was my middle name with resiliency in my rear view. I have been learning to show myself care, and learning to cut myself some slack. I have been learning to let life unfold and not play the puppet master so much. I have taken myself out on countless solo dates and adventures getting to know the goddess of my heart. The tools Ben taught me, gave me permission to explore myself experiencing life on human terms.
