Visited there a few weeks ago after I tripped on an escalator step and required stitches on my nose. Since it was a Sunday, I mentally prepared myself for a wait in the ER. Check-in was relatively quick and since they didn't take American insurance, I was required to pay €200 for the visit (for the total visit; complain about "socialized medicine" all you want but it works).
While the waiting room was sparse (couple of vending machines and no entertainment), patients were slowly called up one by one. After about an hour wait (typical I think for any ER in the world), I was seen by an exceptional doctor, Dr. Weilbach. Dr. Weilbach and her team did a phenomenal job cleaning my injury and after examining me closely, she called a plastic surgeon in for a consult. Because the injury occurred to my nose, Dr. Weilbach wanted to minimize any risk of scaring and said that she would need to enlist the best. Unfortunately, the plastic surgeon was in surgery so I needed to wait another 2 hours or so to see him but I am glad I waited. The surgeon did a great job applying stitches and informed me I would "have a new nose by Christmas." Dr. Weilbach was incredibly apologetic about the wait for the plastic surgeon (more so than she probably needed to be), frequently checking on me to ensure I was comfortable.
Overall, I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. It can be daunting to have to visit a hospital in a foreign country where you don't speak the language but I experienced nothing but professionalism. It did consume 4 hours of my Sunday but I think that'd be the case in any ER. Sadly, I speak very little German but the staff went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable, using what little english some of them spoke.
Thank you for taking such good care of me. read more
