Mise en Place is a concept food store and NOT a health food store as its currently listed. One…read moreventures in with the purpose of discovering already set (seasonal) recipes made with fresh ingredients grouped together for easy picking. One has a gander at the various 'stations' decked out with requisite products, topped with a large recipe card and photo of the finished dish before choosing what to cook for an evening meal (or lunch, I suppose). Everything is attractively arranged.
I was greeted by, I assume, the owner who quickly explained M.E.P.'s concept. I was glad for the clarification because upon first glance I had thought the shop might have been a fancy cooking school. I was told that recipes change seasonally with a couple of recipes rotating out, perhaps, on a weekly basis. **Every time I have gone in I have been met with a right friendly 'Welcome to Mise En Place! Are you familiar with our concept?' All smiles and helpful attitude...it's a bit startling.
M.E.P also sells condiments and spices and a selection of wines, meant to be pared with the menus, a lovely range of scented, bio-friendly hand soaps, non-alcoholic drinks and a Swiss-distilled gin!
During the summer months, one can purchase an ice-cream cone at the small trolly located at the counter. The glace trolley is a bit awkwardly placed in that pedestrians have a good view of the product from the pavement, but shoppers in the store do not. Apple cider, in traditional glass jug for dispensing, is sold per cup at the counter as well.
This store is really not my jam as I am not too terribly interested in purchasing a packaged meal, if you will. However, I am impressed with the owner's innovative and can-do attitude. Think Swiss service is a bit paltry? Then come to Mise en Place and prepare to have your mind changed. I hope M.E.P succeeds and, given both its position along Seefeldstrasse & the owner's tremendous efforts, it certainly has a fighting chance.
