It was originally built as a sanatorium in 1896, but it was never used for its intended purpose. Instead, it became popular as a hotel because of the Bergen Railway. After the Bergen Railway was opened in 1909, and especially after the Flåm Railway was connected with the Bergen Railway in 1940 it became a go to destination but times and fortune change. My first impression; I thought I was in an old folks home. It's on different floor levels within so one goes up/down a few steps to get to different rooms. It's not for wheelchair users. We arrived here without any welcome as 'cash cows'. We were part of the Flåm £15O a head railway trip off Norwegian Prima. Our guide walked us up a slope from the station, in the rain, into the hotel, on a wet dank afternoon, only to tell us to go down two floors inside, for rather poor - tasting filtered cool coffee that sat on the tables in flasks. As we were cash cows other cash cows who were there from an earlier trip had blocked the narrow hallway in which was annoying given the cold rain as we were held outside jostling to get in. As we were a crowd we were put in an ugly nondescript room packed tight with fellow travellers. It resembled a school assembly hall with a public sector school dinner approach. So once we got into the downstairs room allocated for us we poured flasked coffee into tiny hotel style cold cups ending up with lukewarm lousy coffee which is unpleasant. If the (cold, limp, thin) waffles that sat plated on a top table were loving made fresh by the hotel's chef, from the finest flour, mountain butter and cream, treacly cane sugar from Mauritius and fresh free range double yolked XL eggs from happy chickens living their best life on a mountain side then sadly it isn't working as these potentially microwaved limp offerings had all the hallmarks of vegetable oil and powdered egg factory manufacturing. The raspberry jam (I expected cloudberry) and runny sour cream helped but honestly if you were served this stuff in a local cafe you'd be reluctant to pay and you wouldn't return. Given it's a £150 a head they have a cheek serving this rubbish. Having looked around the hotel and its surroundings I was glad ours was a brief visit. If the food served to guests is anything like the poor quality we got it has little going for it except the location. I have no desire to return.

When we came back we were served duck confit, with _two_ pieces of legs, which was delicious after a hard 54 km bike ride. To top it off, the duck was served with gardens greens from outside the hotel Afterwards we also had a dessert which came in huge portions so we could easily share Room was very decent for the price, especially considering the main dish was included Offers fresh bread and spreads for order so you can eat breakfast in your room next morning

Jamie W. and I were passengers on the more traditional Geiranger Fjord Cruise just two days before and loved it (review: https://bit.ly/3pfKiCW). This one travels between Gudvangen and Flam, and it was a lot more crowded as a lot of tourist buses arrived at the same time in Gudvangen. However, the unique multi-floor design didn't feel claustrophobic as the exterior diagonal walkways connected the spaces in a most unobtrusive way. Believe me, you don't want anything obtrusive in your way when you're Instagramming all the striking scenery in Sognefjord (apparently the world's longest fjord) and Aurlandsfjord. It was so beautiful we saw these waterways twice more - at a faster pace in the Fjord Safari zodiac boat (review: https://bit.ly/3pfKm5E) and from up above on the Stegastein Viewpoint (review: https://bit.ly/3dxIwe1). The cruise lasted a couple of hours, a quickie by Norwegian standards, and there was even a snack bar with a constant line. However, we were so entranced by the lack of combustion that we decided we didn't need a hot dog. RELATED - Exploring Norway? This review only covers the amenities accessible by us. The restrooms here were pretty awful smelling inside. Significant improvements needed. The views from the back of the hotel down into the Nærøydalen valley would've been nicer on a clear day. One could just make out the old winding road below us. Too bad as others have posted some beautiful photos on a clear day. We did a quick walk through of the hotel and found the decor was of an older style with a mixture of antique statues, furnishings and other items. A gift shop also sold drinks and snacks so it was good opportunity to grab a quick snack before continuing on the bus to Voss.

The hostel/cabins book months in advance, so don't come here expecting to find a room the same day. We made that mistake and were directed to the campsite instead. I have to admit, paying 225 krone (about $30) per night to pitch our tent on a random patch of grass was a disappointment, but you'd be hard-pressed to find anything cheaper in Flam, which is a major tourist destination. This place is in a solid location too, as it is about a 5-minute walk from the bus station. As far as campsites go, this one is very basic. There are water spouts, bathrooms with coin-op showers, a small communal kitchen, a playground for the kidlets, and coin-op laundry. Food options are a mini-store at the info desk and a food truck that comes at night. There are some broken wooden picnic tables to eat your food at, some covered by the pavilion and others uncovered. Bathrooms are clean enough. If I were to return to Flam, I would book a cabin way in advance, since it seemed to be an overall much nicer experience.

The rooms are quite small, but the beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows. Our shower room however only had scalding hot water. During a very hot summer, this was very problematic. The place is fairly far out from the main Flam attractions -- about half-a-mile or so. Breakfast was included and decent. Fairly typical Norwegian fare of fish, caviar, bread, hard-boiled eggs, etc. I can't compare prices, as all other available hotels were unavailable by time we had booked.
