As I'm about to move away from East London for a quieter life in Hampshire, I decided this would be the best place locally to have my last supper. I wasn't wrong. I booked a table for 5 on a Saturday night I didn't book it until late afternoon but they were able to accommodate us. It's a set menu only on a Saturday night (I forgot to ask how much that was but it worked out, including wine, beer and a couple of spirits to around £30 per head). For that you get meze starters cold starters such as taramasalata, hummus, delicious aubergine bake thing etc with constantly topped up fresh sesame seeded bread and more dishes being brought out, then hot starters such as cheese & spinach filo parcels, little lamb kofte kebabs, breadcrumbed fish, grilled haloumi etc. By now you're quite full (especially if you overdid it on the fresh bread with your hummus) and you think it must be the end, when you're told you can order more (as much as you like) meze starters, it's all included in the set price. So you order more of your favourite items. And then, when you are well and truly stuffed, you are brought out your rather large main meal! Mine & my friends were a mixed grill & salad with lamb, herbed sausage (and I can't remember what the 3rd thing was but it was delicious anyway) and I'd already advised when I booked that my brother's family were vegetarian / ate fish so theirs was 2 fabulously cooked melt in the mouth swordfish steaks. And finally, after all that, we were brought out 2 large platters of very refreshing fresh fruit slices (kiwi, pineapple, grapes etc). The waiter & waitress looking after our area were excellent and very attentive always on duty watching, without being obvious, when any table had finished a dish / needed topping up or someone wanted them to come over, and the atmosphere, with the Turkish live music / singing was happy, fun and relaxed like a family party. It was a real ideal family restaurant and I'm kind of kicking myself for not going more often before I moved away!

My go-to dish is the Adana Köfte - I go for the large portion. It comes with a delicious side salad (traditionally liberally sprinkled with Sumac) and a heaping of fat bread and yogurt dip. The atmosphere is busy...it's a large space. But the service is efficient and quick. This is a great place to go to with a larger group as they have excellent sharing platters.

I had a mixed donner kebab which was amazing!!! Both, chicken and lamb, were tender, nicely seasoned, accompanied by mixed rice. On the side they brought me an incredible fresh salad (I am sorry I was in a hurry and didn't ask what was in it, but it complimented so well the meat!), home made, oven backed flat bread, which was soft and warm (I am a huge fan of bread), tzatziki and cold aubergine salad. Thank God I was hungry, the portions were huge and I didn't want to leave anything on the plate :) With delicious food, that is great value for money, and friendly stuff, I definitely recommend this place.

There is now another restaurant also called Wood Oven on George lane, closer to the station; same owners maybe, but a different, more upmarket looking vibe. The ambient is informal and noisy in a good, cheerful way; perhaps not the place for an intimate meal, but if you want to enjoy a lively evening you're in the right place. They don't take reservations, but the restaurant have enough seats so the turnover is quick and you won't have to wait ages. In the winter, avoid if possible the tables next to the door to the loos (by the way loos are located outside, at the back) to avoid drafts from people who were born in a barn and leave it wide open. All the ingredients are fresh, and the meat is cooked to perfection, never dry or overcooked. I often get falafel for starters, nice texture and really tasty. I love the lamb shish; I even managed to convert my mother who said she didn't like lamb. Do try the Wood Oven Special if you aren't sure of what to order; it combines lamb and chicken shish, kofta, lamb chops/ribs, chicken wings, rice and salad and serves (well) two people. The rice deserves special mention, SO fluffy and flavoursome. Staff is lovely, smiley and accommodating. Once we were politely asked if we could change tables in order to allow a family to combine two tables and sit together; we happily obliged and got a free extra dish as a treat. Sweet.
