I really love WMVY and listen to it regularly. I was doing morning radio in Massachusetts myself in the spring of 1983 when this little Martha's Vineyard FM radio statio, on a obscure little road, on an island, changed its format, brought in live DJ's, instead of satellite feeds, and began it's run as "Voice of the Vineyard". I was a fan from the early days! Since then there's been some changes but today the station is still run by staffers who've been with them 15, 20, even 30 years. Their stream goes everywhere with half of the station's donors from outside the 88.7 FM broadcast area. And it all still is run out of that little house, down a dirt road, that little Island off the coast of Massachusetts. Pretty cool!
WMVY has a complicated history being both a Class A commercial radio station (formerly 92.7 WMBY) as well as being an online broadcaster run by mvyradio, LLC and another entity, Friends of mvyradio, that's a 501c(3) non-profit created to help pay for streaming and programming expenses so listeners could make tax deductible donations. Since 2013 WMVY can be heard on 88.7FM Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, the South Coast of Massachusetts, as well as parts of the South Shore. They have a repeater signal in Rhode Island on 96.5FM, that covers Aquidneck Island, including Newport, Portsmouth and Middletown, plus Jamestown and parts of Narragansett. But you can listen, like I do, on your mobile device with iTunes, iHeart, etc. or with the MVYradio app as well as on your Alexa or Google devices. MVYRADIO is available on most streaming devices, including Como Audio, Sonos and Amazon Echo. Some of these systems connect to their stream via TuneIn. If your device is voice-activated, tell it to "PLAY M-V-Y-RADIO" (not "WMVY").
As for the programming it's run like radio has been done for a long time, with a morning crew, midday, afternoon, night and graveyard DJ's but there's lots of unique stuff packed in throughout the day and weekends are eclectic and interesting too. You can catch blues, jazz, rock and more with album cuts, local artists and even live music segments. There's a lot happening there and WITHOUT ads or call commercials and it is great while driving, work or in my case just chillin' by the beach.
Bottom line: Take it from this old DJ, if you miss radio like it used to be, WMVY could be your new place to listen. HIGHLY recommended!
