Our first meal in this melting pot of a city. So excited to try what the city offers. I got "bauernfrüshtück" which was basically potatoes, eggs and pieces of bacon. Three simple ingredients yielding a most delicious outcome. You hardly notice the minute pieces of bacon, but you tasted it. It also came with 3 pieces of fried herring (like a real fishball) and pickled onions and cornichons, as a side dish. There isn't a lot of room, but this is a great unique place, which is nice because it's right by the train station. There is a little store at the front part of the restaurant where you can by food products. What I ordered: I got a goat cheese salad and a berry lemonade. The lemonade was great if you love special lemonades! The salad was yummy and was topped with nuts and fruit. It also came with a small piece of multi-grain toast. My friend got the apple streusel and thought it was yummy, but wasn't as sweet as some other desserts. The desserts looked amazing! I regret not getting one. read more

Fantastic breakfast just around the corner from the Hbf train station. Excellent service with English-speaking staff, and they now have English menus. Great little shop in the front with an assortment of chocolates and teas to bring home as gifts. Definitely the opposite of the tourist trap you'd expect so close to the station. Train travelers to Hamburg...I implore you! Skip the Pizza Hut, fast food, grab-n-go fare and skip just a mere two blocks to the MUTTERLAND! Easily located just a 2 minute walk from the central train station, Mutterland is part gourmet market, part cafe. In my short visit to Hamburg (24 hours) I managed to be here twice, enjoying a lemonade, two cappuccinos (with two heart shaped cookies to match!), and a breakfast plate. Everything was wonderfully fresh, served quickly and with a smile. The cafe portion is small, with seating for about 20 or so people, but cozy and a nice place to sit for a bit. It's tucked just far away from the madness of Hautbahnhof to catch one's breath, enjoy a nice cafe meal or coffee and be on your way... *no alcoholic drinks. *the cakes look delicious *many items pre-packaged to go (cheese, meats, etc) *small gifts and cooking items, too! Lovely place near the Hamburg Hbf that isn't a tourist trap! That pretty much sums up Mutterland for me. I am rather suspicious when it comes to trying out places near a central station because they're usually tourist trap. Bad food, expensive stuff, English menu. I'm happy to report that Mutterland is neither of them. It is some sort of homemade / organic shop that sells chocolate, honey and other sweets and ingredients and a cafe in the back. It's very cosy place that I was lucky to find after searching for breakfast / brunch area near the Hbf. We came in around 11.30am on a Sunday, so we had to wait for a couple of minutes before we got seats as the place was very popular, but worry not - we got our seats without waiting too long as some people already finished their brunch around then. We were initially thinking about ordering the breakfast set (after seeing trays full of goodies on other tables) but decided to go for the scrambled egg (for me) and omelette (for him). The scrambled egg with ham, cucumber (!! I usually loathe cucumber), tomatoes and goat cheese was very good. I suspect it was the goat cheese that made it so good. I ordered the apple, ginger (and other stuff that I couldn't remember) juice that was very good as well. The omelette was equally wonderful. It was quite big and looked like a very delicious pizza (close friends on mine would know that I'm not a big fan of pizza *gasp* shocking, right!) They have extensive menu that makes me want to order everything. There's no English menu but you could ask the waiter to help you out with translation. As for me, good thing my boyfriend can speak German and German and Danish isn't that much different so I could pretty much guess my way throughout the menu. If you're near the Hbf and wants to chill for a while or need to have brunch, this is the place to go. read more

Cute little cafe right by hauptbahnof süd. Came here one afternoon to meet a friend. If you are eating in the cafe then you have to be seated to order. Otherwise just go up to the counter and order everything to go. The menu has a little bit of everything from savory to sweet bites and drinks. Looks like a nice place for lunch as they serve soups, salads and sandwiches. They have a variety of drinks outside of normal coffee offerings as well. My friend ordered a cappuccino and a slice of the Apple cheese cake. I ordered the peppermint hot cocoa with just normal cheesecake. The hot cocoa was just ok as I wanted there to be more of a peppermint taste but it was very light. My cheesecake was also light in texture and taste and I hoped it would have been a little sweeter. I did have a bite of my friend's Apple cake and that was tasty. A bit sweeter and the apples seemed fresh! I would come here again to try their lunch options and another drink! It's a very nice casual atmosphere if you wanted to catch up with a friend or just catch up on some reading. I choose here because I wanted to go to a cafe with some foods and free wifi. Actually they have no wifi there. I asked a staff and she said the wifi is for their office. However I still liked the place. The atmosphere was good. And many desserts, friendly people and so on. I visited there again next day for breakfast with my brother. Right by train station if you're delayed or just have time to kill. I'm always suspicious of a place so central but Mutterland turned out to be quite a gem. It's clean and cute inside with good wifi. It is mostly a store for local goods, the dining area is very small and seems better for a quick coffee in the afternoon if not for the menus which have NYC prices and breakfast selections. My friend and I ordered and shared the süßes Frühstück and Fit Mutti - she also got a black tea which was not black at all but very friendly and very small. All in all, the food was unremarkable though presented very sweetly. I think Mother would have presented more heartier fare in the heartland but this is the classiest place you'll find near the Hauptbahnhof. Everywhere else has baked beans for 8€ - better to get three places of bread and tiny jars of jam for that price. Oh, the Marmelade was good, but next time I'd go for a shopping trip and have just the Marmelade with a warm loaf from my local, motherly bakery instead. read more

Eh. There was so much hype on this restaurant that we went out of our way to make sure that we experienced it. It's pretty tiny. There are maybe 10 seats in the back of the store and it's a first-come-first-serve basis. We got a couple of different things to try but no one was over all impressed with their food. Wet from the rain and disappointed that most shops of interest are closed on Sundays in Hamburg, we trudged into Mutterland. We were lucky enough to grab a table without waiting and the place quickly began filling up. After struggling to understand the menu in German, our server kindly translated a few things for us. The omelette with cherry tomatoes, goat cheese, and karse sprouts was delicious and filling. At the table next to us was a tiered stand full of tempting cold cuts, cheese, bread, and fruit. 8.20am breakfast on Friday. We were seated with no menus. After waiting for approx 10min with no menus, I approached waiter and asked if we could get menus. The menus were right behind him. He held up his index finger and said give me a minute. Customers seated after us were led to tables with menus provided immediately. He continued serving other tables for five minutes then brought menus over. We also felt we were racially profiled given we were the only non-Caucasians. After several recommendations we chose to eat our breakfast at this cosy place. We must admit that we weren't impressed... We ordered scrambled eggs, yogurt, coffee, mint tea and cold pressed juice. It took 45 minutes before we got our food. The scrambled eggs were delicious, but the mint tea was not very tasty and the juice didn't taste of anything at all... the waitress forgot our yogurt, so we had to ask for it twice - it wasn't anything special either. Suddenly, there a employee(a lady) who came to approach me to stop me for taking photos. She's very rude and accused me was taking too many photos. She said few is fine but not hundreds????? What what what??? hundreds??? What was in her head and mind. I only took 7-8 pics and spent less than 10 minutes to look at the store section. Tried to figure out what were those products for ( no. English labels). Obviously, she doesn't like the customer like me only check but not purchase any of it. During that 10 minutes... there's another 8 shoppers like me just checking and then walked away. I had no idea why she decided to get mad with me???? Anyway.... just because of that kind of attitude, I will definitely not visit again. She's rudest ppl. that I have never met in the Germany.
