Get the bratapfel torte!

Fantastic breakfast just around the corner from the Hbf train station. Excellent service with English-speaking staff, and they now have English menus. Great little shop in the front with an assortment of chocolates and teas to bring home as gifts. Definitely the opposite of the tourist trap you'd expect so close to the station. Highly recommend the ham quiche and apple pastries!

Train travelers to Hamburg...I implore you! Skip the Pizza Hut, fast food, grab-n-go fare and skip just a mere two blocks to the MUTTERLAND! Easily located just a 2 minute walk from the central train station, Mutterland is part gourmet market, part cafe. In my short visit to Hamburg (24 hours) I managed to be here twice, enjoying a lemonade, two cappuccinos (with two heart shaped cookies to match!), and a breakfast plate. Everything was wonderfully fresh, served quickly and with a smile. The cafe portion is small, with seating for about 20 or so people, but cozy and a nice place to sit for a bit. It's tucked just far away from the madness of Hautbahnhof to catch one's breath, enjoy a nice cafe meal or coffee and be on your way... *no alcoholic drinks. *the cakes look delicious *many items pre-packaged to go (cheese, meats, etc) *small gifts and cooking items, too! It's actually the best cappuccino I've had in Europe. Have I said that before? Disregard, I really love these ones. Also, the breakfast plate had wonderful jam, real butter, fresh rolls and tied me over for an entire day...

Omelet and scrambled egg.

Lovely place near the Hamburg Hbf that isn't a tourist trap! That pretty much sums up Mutterland for me. I am rather suspicious when it comes to trying out places near a central station because they're usually tourist trap. Bad food, expensive stuff, English menu. I'm happy to report that Mutterland is neither of them. It is some sort of homemade / organic shop that sells chocolate, honey and other sweets and ingredients and a cafe in the back. It's very cosy place that I was lucky to find after searching for breakfast / brunch area near the Hbf. We came in around 11.30am on a Sunday, so we had to wait for a couple of minutes before we got seats as the place was very popular, but worry not - we got our seats without waiting too long as some people already finished their brunch around then. We were initially thinking about ordering the breakfast set (after seeing trays full of goodies on other tables) but decided to go for the scrambled egg (for me) and omelette (for him). The scrambled egg with ham, cucumber (!! I usually loathe cucumber), tomatoes and goat cheese was very good. I suspect it was the goat cheese that made it so good. I ordered the apple, ginger (and other stuff that I couldn't remember) juice that was very good as well. The omelette was equally wonderful. It was quite big and looked like a very delicious pizza (close friends on mine would know that I'm not a big fan of pizza *gasp* shocking, right!) They have extensive menu that makes me want to order everything. There's no English menu but you could ask the waiter to help you out with translation. As for me, good thing my boyfriend can speak German and German and Danish isn't that much different so I could pretty much guess my way throughout the menu. If you're near the Hbf and wants to chill for a while or need to have brunch, this is the place to go.

Peppermint hot cocoa. Very light taste of peppermint.

Cute little cafe right by hauptbahnof süd. Came here one afternoon to meet a friend. If you are eating in the cafe then you have to be seated to order. Otherwise just go up to the counter and order everything to go. The menu has a little bit of everything from savory to sweet bites and drinks. Looks like a nice place for lunch as they serve soups, salads and sandwiches. They have a variety of drinks outside of normal coffee offerings as well. My friend ordered a cappuccino and a slice of the Apple cheese cake. I ordered the peppermint hot cocoa with just normal cheesecake. The hot cocoa was just ok as I wanted there to be more of a peppermint taste but it was very light. My cheesecake was also light in texture and taste and I hoped it would have been a little sweeter. I did have a bite of my friend's Apple cake and that was tasty. A bit sweeter and the apples seemed fresh! I would come here again to try their lunch options and another drink! It's a very nice casual atmosphere if you wanted to catch up with a friend or just catch up on some reading. I like how there is a little shop where you can purchase various teas, gins, and snacks like cookies as well!

I choose here because I wanted to go to a cafe with some foods and free wifi. Actually they have no wifi there. I asked a staff and she said the wifi is for their office. However I still liked the place. The atmosphere was good. And many desserts, friendly people and so on. I visited there again next day for breakfast with my brother. We ordered Moin Moin and an omelet and fresh fruit juices. Everything was so good.

A little peak at the great selection of products!

The best local products store in Hamburg and a great concept that I hope could have in the U.S. The store is filled entirely with a different array of local products from candies to pastries to coffee's and vodka. The ambiance is chic and elegant this particular store has two floors. The service is fantastic you feel welcome and greeted. I purchased and array of products here from local jelly to german vodka. This is a great store to buy gifts on the go.

Großes Frühstück with cappuccino

A really charming place with clean and bright decor, ideal for sitting back with a coffee and a small bite from their attractive selection of pastries! The waitstaff here were all very friendly and accommodating, which is always a plus. Ordered the Großes Frühstück, which comes served on a tiered tray and includes an assortment of breads, meats, cheeses, fruits, etc. The cappuccino had some cute foam art and a small cube of coffee cake perched on the saucer to boot. Worth checking out the next time you're near the Hauptbahnhof.

Fresh organic scrambled eggs, apple cinnamon roll, excellent bacon but you must ask them to make it crispy, refreshing professionally pressed juice, get here early or they run out of Pancakes. The polite service.

Very fresh concept of original German products, motherly service :-) and very tastefully designed. It's basically a shop which slowly growing into caffe too. Because lack of space I often don't find a free space which is bit of a bummer. I love that old style furniter, counters and shelves which somehow really fits well.

This building in the Speicherstadt dates back to 1888. The café and shop is very popular. They have a color-code system that divides the coffee they roast into 5 different categories. The shop is very organized. Upon entering, it's not so clear where you need to go to be seated. You'll see the shop to the left, and the roastery & equipment is front & center. I believe this area may be reserved for coffee tasting tours, but I'm not sure. The hostess stand is all the way to the right side of the café. That's where you'll need to line up for table service. There was no wait for us. They happened to have a high-top available. The only 2 seats left in the café. It was bustling on a weekday. I could hear many different languages being spoken around us. It's as if we were in a museum café. The ambiance is very nice, but loud at times. Our waiter was very helpful when making our coffee selections. You get to choose the type of espresso and the coffee preparation. There are 4 different types. We both chose the Il Gusto Espressomischung in a latte macchiato form. I love how the menu gives you the different types of notes and finishes. She also provided a pastry & dessert menu. We selected 2 different kinds of franzbrötchen. One was made from spelt. Unfortunately, they didn't seem fresh. They would have been better served warm. The cinnamon rolls were dry, but had good flavor. Not too sweet, which is a good thing. The coffee was very good, but not as robust as we'd hoped it would be. We probably should have selected the Honduran one. It was still a lovely experience, and the service was great. There are clean restrooms as you're exiting from the other doorway. There were so many things that I wanted to buy at the shop. I was reminded of mom when I saw the old fashioned wooden coffee grinders. She brought one back from Germany when I was a teenager. She loved that little grinder. If anything, definitely make a stop here to shop for coffee, candies, and souvenirs. They have all kinds of local goods in one beautiful store. The chocolate covered cherries and strawberries that we purchased are excellent. You'll just have to experience it for yourself when in Speicherstadt.
