Ouvert au public depuis 1996, le musée est surtout réputé pour abriter des chefs-d'oeuvre des XIXème et XXème siècles, parmi lesquels on compte les peintres Picasso, Van Gogh, Cézanne ou encore Modigliani. On y trouve également une très belle collection de mobiliers et objets d'art du Moyen-Age au XVIIIème siècle (J.Vernet, Boucher et H.Robert...). Le musée est situé dans un ancien hôtel particulier de la rue Laboureur, petite rue parallèle à la rue de la République. Sa mission profonde est de partager avec le public la somptueuse collection de peintures et de mobilier héritée du couturier Jacques Doucet (1853-1929), pionnier de la haute couture, amateur d'art et mécène précieux des artistes et des écrivains de son temps. Véritable écrin, le Musée Angladon - Collection Jacques Doucet veut offrir à ses visiteurs un moment privilégié d'observation, de partage et d'intimité avec les plus grands artistes de la modernité: Degas, Daumier, Manet , Sisley, Vuillard, Derain, Picasso, Foujita, Modigliani, Van Gogh et Cézanne ... La maison a conservé le charme d'un intérieur d'amateurs d'art, avec de nombreux tableaux, des meubles estampillés et objets d'art, répartis en salles thématiques: salle Renaissance, salons des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, cabinet d'Extrême-Orient.

When we approached the front door we were told by the first person to greet us that the exhibit was closed. We explained that we had driven an hour to get there and would stay for just a short time to respect the 6pm closing. He then points us to the main check in/register area. I approach and are told that the exhibit is closed. I explained the situation and the person was just intransient. He said he could make no allowances and I could tell that he could care less that we had made an extreme effort to get there. It wasn't as if we were there at 10 minutes before closing. We have had very good experiences with service people on France on this trip up to today but found his attitude to represent what I have heard about civil service workers or officials in this country. He could care less about service and just had an attitude that I am done and don't want to be put off. I'm sure he could care less but I need to post this to ensure that others don't make the mistake that we made. Don't expect any leeway at all!! It left me with a bad feeling and I will be telling all that I know through posts and conversations about this bad experience.

For that reason alone, Fondation Vincent Van Gogh is a striking place. But what is even more striking is to find that, when I went in the winter, the collection had gone on holiday. On my visit, only on VVG piece was left at the foundation. In fact, there was more to view in the gift shop than in the museum. That said, it wasn't a complete bust. The walk from where I had parked through the winding alleys was charming and the foundation itself has beautiful facilities. Nevertheless, probably best to not plan a trip there in the winter.

We came here after visiting Espace Van Gogh, which is beyond beautiful, but doesn't provide much in…read moreterms of historical information. While this museum only houses five Van Gogh paintings, we thoroughly enjoyed all of its exhibits. The Fondation is a new, modern building (with modern amenities) situated amid the picturesque streets of Arles. There's a nice courtyard and spacious galleries. When we visited, there was an exhibit on a Georgian artist--Niko Pirosmani--and it was fascinating to see the art of near contemporary of Van Gogh's (with a parallel life story) in the same space. There were a few other artists as well, but we liked the Pirosmani stuff best. Bottom line: if you want to see a bunch of Van Gogh paintings, go to Amsterdam. If you're interested in art in general, and want to celebrate its many iterations, then this museum is worth a visit.

In fact, the architectural elements in the chapel were beautiful, and I was allowed to very carefully take a photo of only the ceiling! We were amused to see that the upcoming visiting exhibition is from our own area of the world and belongs to someone we had met on occasion.

The rest were a collection of paintings and small Egyptian section. Currently the second floor is closed. I would call about hours, which change with different seasons. Fondé en 1810 par le collectionneur Esprit Calvet, il est riche d'une collection de Beaux-Arts, peintures et sculptures du XVème au XXème siècle. On y trouve aussi une somptueuse collection de ferronerie du XIVème et XVème siècle.
