Marseille's ancient Mediterranean heritage comes to life inside its sharpest contemporary museum…read more For a unique perspective of top-drawer Musée des Civilisations d'Europe et de la Méditerranée, follow the footpath that helter-skelters between the glass wall of the cube-shaped building and its outer lace shell, designed in high-tech black concrete to echo the fishing nets cast around Marseille since inception. At night the building is lit brilliant blue. The museum's vast and diverse collection is the key to understanding Marseille's backstory. End in neighboring Fort St-Jean, in the peaceful Jardin des Migrations, where cultural diversity and migration in the region gets a horticultural spin.

Lovely free museum with a vast amount of artefacts in Marseille's history from the ancient world…read moreuntil now. Since it's free, everything is in French but it's still cool to see some of the larger artefacts like a ship's hull and some of the bodies recovered there. There's a "ticket" office where someone can direct you to the entrance and they'll do a quick bag check. Only thing I'd recommend is having a donation box somewhere because it's always nice to donate for things like this that are educational.

Not here. While there was no fee to enter, I cannot recommend. What's more, the entrance is through a shopping mall on the lower level, so even finding it is difficult! Their website has not been updated since 2018. Sloppy! Do have a look at Roman ruins just outside however.

Musée Regards de Provence are one of those small local gems that you hope to come across when…read moretravelling. The museum promotes local artists from Provence and has a small but very varied collection of art from local artist - photographs, paintings and sculptures in different materials. Walking through the collection hardly takes more than 15 minutes, if you take a bit of time to study a few of the artworks that you like. None of the text in the exhibits are in English, only French, which does somewhat limits the output for a non-French speaker, but it is none the less interesting to have a look around. The museum is housed in what was previously a sanitary station built in 1948 at a time when it was almost obsolete before it was finished. A 45-min film (it's just as much an art installation as a film) tells a bit about the history of the place. It's really interesting and worth the extra charge to see. But it is not the least bit critical, so bring your own skepticism and notice both the religious references and processing of people as if they were cattle - a bit like going through airport security in France today except there is no DDT involved.

I loved the local people selling their quality goods in tents in 2005. Now there were locals selling fresh fish, which was nice, but not something I was interested in purchasing. We ate mussels, pomme frites and drank champagne. It was a perfect afternoon!!! I was disappointed that it was pretty difficult to find fresh baked bread and pastries in Marseilles. There were a couple "chain" looking places. I had been looking so forward to strolling the streets eating french bread and munching on pastries as I did in 2005. :( It was a bummer. But I was full from my delicious lunch there. We realized there was a whole shopping section we missed. Some fun people from the ship we met and ran into made us aware. Time was limited at this point but we managed to check out their mall. It was tres chic!!! Marseilles is simply beautiful with all their boats and the blue, blue water.

Some of the main attractions are: Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, Old Port, Palais Longchamp, La Major Cathedral, Vallon des Auffes, and of course shopping.
