This is yet another review of mine written not from my experience, but from my brother's. Yes, as with Harry Hall Cycles, the brother dragged me into this shop as part of his most recent trip to Manchester. He wasn't too impressed, but I had a nice time
Now, I'm as musical as a goldfish (though I once learned a RATM bassline so I could join my mate's band, STD. We covered Hole tracks and I left because I couldn't carry on pretending to play bass, and realised I preferred reading to singing, anyway) but even I appreciated this little music shop.
It is, as Emma-Louise points out, cluttered and a bit mad. I am apt to be a little clumsy, so I felt a bit on-edge as I inched my way round, while the brother flitted from guitar to guitar, asking questions and getting answers. He also had a go on the ukulele whils I tried not to trip over a £3,00 guitar. He ended up buying new strings and plectrums, which came to around a tenner and are, he reports, still going strong.
So, why wasn't the brother impressed? Well, he's been playing guitar since he was 9, so he knows a helluva lot about 'em. He seems to think that they aren't very well trained, and that a lot of the stuff they were saying was a load of old bollocks. For example; when he tried to buy strings that he's been buying for years, they tried to make him upgrade to a more expensive set. Luckily the brother knows his stuff and has the stubbornness of an ox. After calmly asking "if these are so rubbish, why do you sell them?" he was finally 'allowed' to buy the original strings.
Another thing, the staff are rude; upon my brother enquiring whether he could try out one of the pricier specimens, the salesman gave him a dirty look, obviously judging his scruffy brother vibe, and sneered. He tried the pricey guitar but we left immediately.
So, if you fancy navigating your way round a charmingly cluttered shop, and are prepared to don a tuxedo to try out a guitar, this is the place for you... read more
