If you like smaller museums, this is a very neat place to check out at least once when visiting Paris. The main floor and second story have beautiful old interiors. The lower level has a more modern look and features a large collection of Monet works, mostly later ones. It is a beautiful place. They also have a temporary exhibition area with rotating exhibits, although I happened to come between exhibits based on when my trip was. They were setting one up while I was in town. The museum isn't huge, so I suggest timed tickets to make entry easy. The residential and tree-filled neighborhood where this museum is located is also quite pretty. It may be nice to walk around and look at the architecture before or after. read more

If you've been to Paris more times than a few and are looking to enjoy some of it's smaller less known museums you'll likely stumble across Musée Marmottan Monet. Is it l'Orangerie? No. Is it charming? Oui. I stopped in Saturday before last for a visit. Admittingly, I didn't spend a really long time here and it'd be a lie if I said it was my favorite smaller musée but there were a few pieces that spoke to me on this visit, that are different than pieces that usually tend to catch my eye. Comparison is the thief of joie, we all know this but I couldn't help but think of l'Orangerie and the water lilies here. Maybe it was just me, I may have been in a different space all together - I dipped away to Paris for a solo weekend so maybe on a different visit I'll feel differently. Le Train Dans Le Niege, La Locomotive 1875, was my favorite of my visit. It's a piece I've never seen before and captured my attention for a good long while. With anything Monet, I feel I have to say you'll be doing yourself an injustice if you don't make it out to Giverny and take it all in for yourself from his garden. Call me crazy I didn't love the Neo Romantics exhibit, not my style. The Berthe Morisots were lovely and I really liked Bergère couchée. There was one missing, possibly on loan that I'd spotted on a postcard in the gift shop and went back upstairs to look for and couldn't find. The collection is quite nice. I'd recommend a visit if you enjoy impressionists and are looking for a smaller, quieter experience. Of course I can visit the larger museums time and time again, but sometimes I enjoy visiting smaller ones I haven't yet had the chance to experience. read more

If you love Impressionist paintings, then you should come here. The neighborhood is worth enjoying as well with many Parisian cafes. The permanent installations include a wide variety of Claude Monet's work donated by his son Dave back in 1943 i believe. The other exhibit ( that I believe is temporary) was the father of Impressionism Eugène Boudin who was Monet's teacher from the young age of 17. So thankful I got to visit with this special art installation. read more

An amazing museum with all kinds of Monet artwork! It's three floors, don't forget to check out the beautiful works of art in the basement under the gift shop. They give you an audio speaker to listen to each station that has a two digit ID number on it. The place is clean, and the security is not a bother. This is my very favorite museum in the world, special in so many ways. It has the beautiful late work of Monet's waterlilies that he gave as a gift to Paris and unveiled to the public after his death. In two circular rooms, his waterlilies line the walls at the perfect height and width your eye can take in in one visual field. Monet was fascinated by the new technology of the camera and incorporated it into his art. The effect is that you're immersed within the painting, very peaceful. The Marmottan focuses on Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art with several hundred works by Gauguin, Manet, Degas, Soutine and others within a magical space of a centuries old former private mansion. A few years ago, the marketing director at SFMOMA asked for ideas on where to spend her one free day in Paris while on a business trip. Her email was quickly swamped with suggestions. This museum is a must see for any Claude Monet fan! They have the largest collection of Monet's work in the world and devote almost an entire floor to his paintings. The gallery walls are covered in massive canvases of his beautiful work. I was impressed and surprised this museum isn't more well known. On the bright side, it allows you to enjoy his work without fighting the huge crowds at the other famous museums in the city. The museum offers an audio guide rental for 3 euros. The audio guide is terrible and offers recordings for probably less than 10% of the art work in the museum. I saw a group with a private guide who was providing them so much history and insight into both artists and artwork in the museum. I wish we had booked a tour as well so we could have learned more. My other tip is to go visit Giverny (Monet's home and gardens) as well. We bought a combo ticket at the museum which included Giverny and it helped us save time by skipping the long line when we got there. read more

If you love Monet, you have to see this museum. We didn't even know about this place until we got to Hotel Molitor and looked at the map of the area. There was a new exhibit being prepared in August 2018, this traffic flow was a bit strange. The place needed better signage. We had to ask where the Monets were located. read more

A recent visit to the Albright Knox museum, (Buffalo NY) reminded me of this museum as they have some Monets on exhibit now. Probably my fav in Paris, although I enjoy the Rodin as well. This museum is a perfect size. Nice visit in under 2 hours. Takes you to part of Paris you may not otherwise get to as well. Easy subway ride and then a short walk. The museum has mostly Monet, but there's a little other stuff too. Gorgeous outside seating in the area as well. I think it's the largest collection of Monets in one place. Sometimes the works are out on loan, but whatever is hanging is terrific. Well worth a morning while in Paris. 2008 read more

This is without question, my favorite museum in Paris. Yes, I went there. I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it. Located off the beaten tourist path in the 16th, you will find the worlds largest single collection of Monet paintings on the planet. Formerly a private collection, over time the collection grew from a few pieces to what is now an amazing display of Monet paintings that offer works from his early years all the way through his time in Giverny. I was simply blown away by this place, and am mad at myself for never seeking it out on any of my earlier Paris trips. If you're reading this now and are in the area, you are in luck! We happen to hit it up as the right time as there is a special exhibit "Impression, soleil levant" running through January. Phenomenal art museum of Monet's private collection of paintings!!! This is a gem and fabulous art museum! The location is outside the tourist places so you will have smaller groups. This week they are featuring a group of Pissarro paintings exhibit so it was a little busy. I love the Monet's paintings, the water lilies, iris, wisteria subjects are divine!! I encourage you to go upstairs to see Berthe Morisot's paintings, female painter famous of the same era. Completely fantastic!! The painting descriptions are in French but I didn't get the audio guide because I prefer to wander through museums without being directed. I enjoyed the wonderful collections! This place is a little out of the way for most tourist, but you well worth the visit. I used the bike share to take a nice bike ride up the river to get there while in Paris. The place was not too busy and of course the main attraction is the Monet paintings they have here. If you like Monet, this is the place to go. Nestled in a quaint neighborhood, you'll find Musee Marmottan Claude Monet is one of the foremost Impressionist painters in history, but did you know the renowned French artist was also a voracious collector of art? Well in this special exhibit, they had specifically displayed the art Monet himself purchased, traded & collected in his lifetime There were also lots of paintings he had completed - water lilies abound! If you really want to get a good look of some of Monet's works throughout his lifetime, I would highly recommend this museum. This museum is located in what I call the suburban part of Paris, apparently where all the people who work for the French embassy live. This museum is not part of the museum pass, but on a positive note it is not crowded at all. Personally for me, I cannot stand crowded places and long line ups. It's pretty funny because I noticed a lot of security guards there but at the same time, not a lot of people there. There were probably more security guards than the amount of people visiting during the time I was visiting which was around a weekday afternoon in August. I don't want to ruin too much but you'll be amazed once you go downstairs! Most of his Impressionist work is down there. It turns out my suspicion as to why the paintings were out of focus was correct. Cataracts. They're also particular about no photography inside the museum. If you have time, I say check out the Orangerie Museum where you can see the panoramic work of Monet. I would comment on more except that would be a whole other review for that museum specifically. read more

Easy: In opposition to what another review says (sorry, but this museum is famous for NOT doing what you say) this museum NEVER LEND ITS PAINTING. NEVER. This is your unique opportunity to see such masterpieces. In particular, there is a majestic circle room with several big sized canvas from Monet which is breath-taking. Just sit on the bench and enjoy the differences and similarities among every single painting, it's a wonderful experience. read more

My favorite museum in Paris! For some reason, This little gem of a museum is under the radar. The gallery houses an amazing body of work as well as fantastic antiques. The upper floors alone will keep you in 1900's impressionism heaven, but the treasures are in the basement! There is a trove of Monet paintings displayed here that are not surpassed - yes! Even better than the Orangerie! The Monet exhibit is slightly hidden: it would be possible to come here and miss it! Don't! In the collection is the painting that started it all "Impression of a Sunrise" that gave the movement its name. Likely, you have seen this in your Art History 101 class or in print. Frankly, I personally have never seen such a stunning painting. Reprints don't capture what this piece, in this setting, evokes sublime! There are plenty of benches for contemplation of the art, its quiet and welcoming, stay for a spell - soak it in! Afterwards, walk through the parc to Ty-Pascal bakery for an amazing pastry or lunch! read more

This is my favorite museum in Paris. Hands down. Marmottan has the largest Monet collection in the world, although most are not his best known works. But for those expecting a strictly Monet museum, know that it is much, much more. Other than the Monet room, which I'll get to, the highlight of Marmottan for me is the room full of midieval works, primarily, it seems, pieces of hymn books and other art from churches and sacred texts from the 13th-16th centuries. Its amazing to see things that old. But the real reason I go to this museum is Monet. I was a little disappointed this time around to find that the large canvas (think entire walls of a room size) Monets aren't there (just for now? anymore?), but I was really impressed with the work they've done on the Monet room. There are narrative placards in both French and English talking about different stages in his life, and video that loops constantly. While you may not see the most famous of the water lily and Japanese Garden paintings, you will see plenty of both, and many other lesser known works. I really can't get enough of Monet, though. The gift shop is big, and diverse, and not all that expensive. I went in intending to stock up on gifts, but left with a bag of souvenirs for myself :) As others have mentioned, Marmottan is kind of out of the way - the best way to get there is to take the Metro to La Muette and walk through the park. There was no line to get in the day we went, and the lack of crowds always makes a museum more enjoyable. read more

The Marmottan boasts the world's largest collection of works by Claude Monet. I was never a fan of Monet or Impressionism or even of fine art until I came here. This museum has the full collection of Monet's works, from Soleil Levant, the first painting that put him on the map and marked the beginning of the Impressionist movement to his later works full of vivid colors and angry brush strokes when he was becoming old and was afraid he was going blind. I'd seen Soleil Levant in books and couldn't figure out why it was so admired. Up close, however, this view of the harbor at Le Havre is so realistic in terms of color and luminosity. I finally understood it. To this day, every time I watch the sunset from Waikiki beach, I think of that painting and marvel at how he got the colors so right. There are amazing pieces in this museum that are not found in any art book. The one that stuck me the most was of some irises, but from a completely different perspective. When you looked at it, it was as if you were lying on your back in the grass, looking up at the flowers and the sky. I loved that one and didn't want to stop looking at it. The circular gallery houses his Nympheas collection. Some of those paintings are gigantic! In the twilight of his life, Monet developed cataracts and thought he was going to go blind. The paintings he produced during that period and afterward had much brighter colors (less of the pastels and a lot more red tones) and a completely different look to me. The brush strokes didn't look as loose and relaxed as before and some of his works seemed angrier. In closing, I would like to state the obvious: I am no expert in art and please forgive my babbling--these are just my impressions! read more

It is a bit pricey and the picture policy is unfortnately quite strict, plus the collection of Monet's actually leaves a lot to be desired as his work has become more and more dispersed over recent years. Sure the Marmottan contains a good portion of his later years, but the rest of the museum is largely "other" expressionists with some quite impressive and others rather uninspiring. Great gift store with good prices. I'd say go once, but I'd only return if the rotating exhibit was something of great interests. read more

While I would be reluctant to call this beautiful house with its rooms full of paintings a museum, it most definitely is the best-rounded collection of Monet paintings I have ever seen. The works are showcased beautifully, mostly by theme, in the various rooms, and the gallery feel as you walk around makes them even more whimsical and effervescent than they already are. If anything the house's architecture makes the visit even more enjoyable and gives it a more informal feeling, a bit as if the artist was showing you his collection himself. I was happy to be able to point out to a group of obviously english-speaking tourists that there were, in fact, english signs across the exhibit. In less prominent places than the french ones, but they did exist. A nice gesture from a (comparatively) small but incredibly thoughtful space. I enjoyed my visit in the bookshop as well, finding an instance of my usual memento (yet another keychain) as well as many books and other less common souvenirs, such as a handbag hook. (perfect for girlfriends who hate leaving precious handbags on the dirty floor, within reach of grasping hands) read more

This is a fantastic little gallery that is not well known, but well worth a visit. It doesn't have the range or variety or size of the other more famous museums, but it has enough. Take a ten-minute walk from Metro La Muette and you will be rewarded by a little gem of a museum tucked into a mansion in a charming Parisian neighborhood. While it may be the dozen or so pieces by Monet that attract you, you will also be tempted by a number of other impressionists presented in a setting where even the furniture is worthy of appreciation. When we visited, they were winding down an impressive exhibit devoted to Marie Laurencin; worth the price of admission in itself. After fighting the crowds (and pickpockets) at the Louvre and, to a lesser extent, the Musee d'Orsay and Orangerie, this museum was a wonderful change of pace and scenery, well off the touristy beaten track, allowing for ample opportunity to savor and relish the many works it exhibits. I agree with previous reviewers in that this museum is set in a beautiful 16th Arrondissement Paris locale, and, at least during the two times we've visited, is not very crowded, allowing for a wonderful, leisurely experience. However, aside from the fact that it isn't part of the Museum Pass affiliation, my biggest gripe about the Marmottan has to do with Monet's signature painting: Impression, Sunrise. The first time we visited the museum, in September 2015, after we had paid our admission, we found out the painting was traveling in Japan as part of an exhibit. During our most recent visit earlier this month, after having checking the museum's website to see if the painting might again be traveling, we discovered, again after having paid, that the painting this time was in an exhibit in Le Havre. I give up. We love Monet's works. But I think we'll settle for the Orsay and Orangerie; closer to the center of the City and where we can use the Museum Pass. read more

This was my favorite museum on my last trip to Paris, but this time there was a special exhibit going on, and the entire downstairs was dedicated to an artist I was not familiar with. I was bummed that many Monet paintings were not on display, but still happily gazed upon his lovely water lillies in one main room. If you are taking the trek to Giverny, note you can buy a combined ticket, but you have to buy them upon entering, as we discovered the hard way. It only saves a Euro or two, but also cuts the wait in line at Giverny, which can be considerable. Don't miss the illuminated manuscripts room which I came upon serendipitously. There's not much more to say than this is a must see! A museum full of impressionist painters. While you're in the neighborhood, make sure to stop by the Maison de Balzac which isn't too far and enjoy the view. Makes for a nice day, especially if you're on bike, cruising through the winding streets of the 16th. read more
