We've been particularly happy with the emphasis on deeper conceptual understanding of material, so it's not just rote memorization and regurgitation. Word problems were a significant part of Kindergarten math, and I'm positive I wasn't doing word problems that early when I was a kid. The teachers and administration are very receptive to feedback and concerns that inevitably crop up during the school year. We've been happy with the way they've handled issues, and clearly customer service is an important part of their philosophy. Tuition is on the higher range of private schools, but in this case you truly do get what you pay for.

But he was not prepared that while working like he has never worked before, he would enjoy himself so much in the process. Both, he and I were touched, when more than one of his teachers sendt him encouraging emails, noticing that he worked hard while trying to adjust to the new school and find his own rhythm and method. His Chemistry, Chinese, English, and History teachers were cheering him on, knowing he wanted to take Honors classes next year and were always available for extra help. I have read reviews of Harker, where parents (or their friends) complained about the quality of teachers. In our first year at Harker, I only saw teachers who want their kids to excel, who are experts in their areas, who know how to motivate kids, and help them realize their full potential. When he started at Harker, my son joined DECA club and fell in love with all things marketing and business because of the two teachers and DECA team. He traveled and competed within a few months of joining DECA. He enjoyed his time with the students and made lots of friends. He was happy that he could talk finally with kids about politics, history, as well as other teenage topics. Harker Dance and Theater programs are very impressive. The new theater is beautiful and their boy hip hop dance team is really top notch. I love it that the school with such strong academic emphasis is developing the whole child, offering arts, sports, and really wide variety of activities. Choosing what to spend time on is hard. But it is a good problem to have. I have not heard any complaints from him about unhealthy competition or lack of friends at school. Based on our experience so far, Harker created an environment where kids who love learning get to do just that, learn, and enjoy themselves in the process.

We have been attending different camps here all summer and every camp has been incredible. My daughter loved every week from baking camp to art to ice skating. Seeing her ice skating today brought tears to my eyes. The owner Ms Anamika is a sweetheart and she knows the names of the kids personally. She is always at the gate to welcome the kids in the morning and see them off in the afternoon. I had certain special requests to help me and she accommodated very sweetly. We cannot wait to be back! The front desk along with Ms Naylor all committed perjury to police officers and falsely reported that I was the one who did what I called to report about and the HR department of the school district tried to allege that there has been all this misconduct on my part AFTER I complained with a police report on their staff - they ironically have no emails , incident reports, or police reports against me or my conduct at this school as a parent but are now alleging this with zero documentation after I had to file a report on this school - this gross misconduct and illegal behavior needs to be investigated immediately. I tried to complain once before about Kathleen's unprofessional behavior and was ignored. Kathleen and the women in this office have gotten away with so much that they now feel emboldened to put their hands on parents of the students. After I filed a police report and contacted the superintendent- they retaliated and stuck to a similar lie behind Kathleen (which they weren't able to say the same story when separated and on the stand which is why their claims were dismissed ultimately). They are now trying to falsely defame my character to other school staff members and parents by saying there is a retraining order against me when there in fact is not further adding to the lengths these people are going too to save themselves from a pending lawsuit

When I think of school, I think about EDS and how it was such an amazing school. They have a nature path and a giant place called the Moreland Woods Moreland School District continues its legacy of outstanding musical programming and is thrilled to announce that the Easterbrook Discovery School instrumental music groups were recognized in several categories at this year's Music in the Parks Festival and Competition. The EDS band, orchestra, and jazz band all participated and each went home with a trophy. Symphonic Band placed first in the category with a rating of "excellent". Symphonic Strings was placed first in the category with a rating of "superior," which is the highest possible rating. Jazz Band placed first in their category and also received a "superior" rating. We as a family love the school, each teacher and IA that we've had here are absolutely amazing, they see each child - their strengths and challenges they work with the children, they seem to love what they do and it is reflected on the children. The respect, social emotional support and collaborative environment is truly exceptional, one of a kind, and I see how it allows children the emotional availability they need to focus learn and thrive. The parents involvement makes it a village, and I believe- it takes a village. Aiding on campus and in their classrooms, has strengthened my connection with my children and their friends, and their friends' families. The community is amazing, we share similar values, and as a family we feel surrounded with like minded people. We help each other and each other's children, we notice them we pay attention when they are struggling or sad and we support them with tools we learned from the School's unique parents training program, where we learn to communicate to get cooperation and support kids confidence and well being, help navigate more tricky social situations that otherwise could have had a big impact on our kiddos'.. The training I got here has helped me become a better person and a better parent, feel more capable solving conflicts and support children resolve conflicts, teaching them essentially how to listen and how to help others feel heard, how to come up with thoughtful solutions by themselves, and execute them, to eventually learn how to resolve conflicts on their own.. I wish I learned that when I was a child. Academics alone does not have the impact that critical thinking and communication tools and independent problem solving have on a person's well being and success in the world. So schools that teach both have a huge advantage in my view. The academics here taught thoughtfully while using variety of elements for kids to grasp a deeper understanding and a strong foundation that is not relying on tedious memorization, but on curiosity and learning by experiencing. After hearing from alumni children it sounds like that type of foundation they got here gave them an edge over their peers in a more fast past complex academic environment. This school is a gem in the CUSD…read more - very low risk of bullying. Bullying happens anywhere and in a setting where doors are closed (most schools), it's hard to stop it. At McAuliffe there are eyes and ears everywhere (teachers, parent volunteers, Ia) , so this behavior is stopped very quickly - risk taking. This is one of the pillars. In first grade, for example, I saw kids raising hands asking for help with spelling during writing class. The teacher told them to write the first draft using everything they knew (phonics) and not to stop because they didn't know how to write a word perfectly. (The teacher showed them the correct spelling in the second draft). This is brave spelling and another example where risk taking is encouraged in every curriculum - small group teaching helps kids learn better. In other schools, it's 1 teacher for 20 some kids. My friends have volunteered one day in their kids' class and they were horrified: Kids unable to focus. Literally one student was disturbing the class every 5 seconds. Both my friends felt sorry for the teacher.

I attended four different elementary schools in the 90's and early 2000's but this is the only one…read moreworth remembering. Latimer has changed a lot since I graduated all those years ago, but I have so many memories and stories to share of those good old days. From 1999 to 2000 this school underwent some Maintenance or something and the school was transferred to Strawberry Park for the year. The walls used for handball are still there and will likely stand the rest of time. Near the older basketball courts was actually our PE area, and where most of the early morning rallies and attendance. I was there when there was a sandbox, later a tan bark box, which was on the fence opposite of Latimer Ave. I remember the wooden and metal playground in a sandbox near the lunch area, later replaced with astroturf and the current main playground that can be seen from Latimer Ave. I was there when the new (at the time) library by the admin office opened. I remember all the balloons and cheering, you'd think it was a city parade. The previous library had just been a hole in the wall. Near the old basketball courts was just a giant patch of grass with a sci-fi cart you'd seen on an amusement park ride. My friends and I would play make believe so much on that old thing or fill it was sand. Where the newer basketball courts are was just a giant field and a small area for baseball/kickball. The former lunch area was actually near the center of the school by the octagon building. There had been a small tree planted there in remembrance of a girl, I think her name was Christine. I used to climb the tree in the small field by the octagon. I'm so glad it's still there. From Latimer Ave there used to be two portables on the field belonging to Small World Schools, a daycare program which I attended. Always had nice teaches and made most of my early friends there, one of which I still know and talk to. I was on cafeteria duty a few times since we got a free lunch out of it - usually a slice if pizza,or burger, or chicken nuggets, and a choice of milk. We called the lunches we got at school 'hot lunches' and food from home 'cold lunches'. These are but a few of my memories and I'm glad to see the old school is still there. May future generations know the same happiness, acceptance, and warm memories I've carried with me all these years. Thanks for the memories

I went there for fifth grade and my brother went there for all six years of elementary school…read more Sadly, I would have to say that the school overall did not provide nor foster a loving learning environment for either of us. The majority of our teachers were not supportive and were very disorganized, though this does not apply to ALL teachers, as I believe there were some who actually were very helpful and caring, allowing us to really enjoy learning new material. However, out of the seven teachers that me and my brother had, only one cared about her students and her class was the only one that we felt we actually loved learning new material in. In addition, there were many times where if there was conflict between the students, the teachers would often jump to pointing fingers and placing blame on innocent students instead of getting the story straight first, making us students feel things were unfair and affecting our social skills and love for school. The office administration staff is okay, though there were some secretaries in the front office that would often disrespect students, often talking to us with a "I'm better than you because of my title and position" voice, not having any form of self-respect and dignity to allow students to grow. Ms. Tanya Robertson especially did not have any form of communication to students, and would address us in a disdained tone, but then change her voice to a respectful one when any parents were nearby, making us students feel lowly and not allowing any of us to feel any confidence when growing up. The lunch ladies and yard duties there were also not very nice, too selfish and addressing students in a dismissive and irritated tone as well. Many times yard duties wouldn't even bother to actually keep an eye on students, just busy talking to one another and dismissing us students whenever we needed help. They would often be quick to place blame on students as well when there was conflict, placing blame on innocent students instead of getting the story straight first. The lunch quality at De Vargas is also very bad, and there were many times where the milk from the lunch line would be expired. All this created a sort of back-stabbing social environment for the students, and led to many animosity between classmates and did not provide a supportive community at De Vargas elementary at all. Thus, I sadly have to say De Vargas did not provide a loving learning environment at all, and, if possible, going to another school that would help give children a better stable foundation would be better for the students and their future. I hope that there will be changes to De Vargas to help provide a community for students and parents alike.
