Wings: a seriously up lifting eagle of Cantonese/Peeking food!…read more Considering the amount of favourable reviews on other sites that this place has, I'm very surprised to see that this is to be the first yelp review. We were first attracted to Wings due to the duck and pork hanging in the window. A properly marinated and hung peeking duck is a marvelous treat for any carnivorous human. Yet one that is not that easy to find. The window hinted at great promise of that treat. So when furious fat Friday arrived, (you know, fat Friday *after* a paycheck, as opposed to other fat Fridays), hubs and I dutifully headed to Wings for a take out meal. We ordered a huge amount of food! Well it was our first Chinese take out food since our arrival in the area. I have to say, this place did live up to its reviews, (elsewhere on the web, natch!). Our prawn toasts were generously smoothered in minced prawns, and the portion was equally sizeable. The barbeque spare ribs were the only part that were just above average. Sadly, some of the meat was dry and stringy and even the lashings of syrup could not hide this. However, they were flavorful and, again, a well sized portion. The roast duck in soy sauce was perfect. The duck pink, juicer than your naughty aunt, and with beautifully rendered fat. All served traditionally cold with soy on the side. The duck in plum sauce needed a good stir to ensure the fat mixed back into the sauce, but it still retained the right amount of sticky-sweet to compliment the meat. A personal preference is for my duck to be coated in flour before a flash in a fryer. If that had happened, this good dish would have been made great. Our crispy chilli beef was sweet n spicy, our chow mien thankfully dry and without sauce. Goodness, I hate a soggy chow mien. I'd have liked a bit more roast pork though. Wink wink! Finally our Hong Kong style sweet and sour was epic. Well balanced on the s&s, generous, and with veggies that were neither soggy or raw. There is an overabundance of raw veggies in s&s, so this was really pleasant. We finshed nearly all of this. Please take into account that we had a portion of noodles each. I got full, but just wanted to keep on eating, it was sooo tasty. I can't wait to try try the fish dishes, and I'm stupidly excited about the soft-shell crab. There is a reason why Wings doesn't need a website, a presence on just est, or run a delivery service - good old word of the web/mouth is all that this tasty little place needs!

On occasion I have used other Chinese restaurants and in comparison I have found most of them wanting - even the more expensive ones! Wings' roast duck is magnificent, as are their prawns, but really all of their other dishes are excellent. Try their fried squid with chili and garlic, you'll be glad you did! The service is friendly and efficient; the portion sizes are good. The only downside is that at weekends they get so busy you may have to queue up. Still, well worth the wait!!
