The view from the Observation Tower is spectacular, an alp or two is always good eye candy. We spend about 2 hours wandering around, through the museum and courtyard. Look through every window you find and you can see why this Fortress was impenetrable. Also have a go with the bells on way out and if you have time come back to the bell area at 11.00am to hear the original mechanism working. A final drink and snack in the restaurant will afford those great views once more. We arrived early with few people around. Yes there are a lot of steps but they are well designed and shallow. The way down from the tower is separate to the way up so you don't get blockages. The rest rooms are fantastic just at the end of the Museum.

Some of the major highlights of Fortress Hohensalzburg are the magnificent Princes' Rooms, the Magic Theater on the High Level, the Great Armory in the castle courtyard, the various museums (like the marionette museum, the tower and the historical museum) were all very interesting and detailed. Go up for the breathtaking views over the rooftops of the city. It was really interesting to learn how this fortress had evolved over a period of almost 500 years. If you want to do all, it would take 3-5 hours...it's huge.....

"Die Pietà" or "Coat of Peace" is a public art piece located in Salzburg's Kapitelplatz. It was…read morecreated by Czech painter and sculptor, Anna Chromy. The statue is also known as Cloak of Conscience and there are versions of it in other European cities. The statue is fairly small, so it could be easily missed when roaming the area. There is another public art piece called "Sphaera" at Kapitelplatz that steals this piece's thunder due to its size. The faceless figure is mysterious and dark, but also kind of scary. Not necessarily worth seeking out on its own, but it deserves a look if you are in the area.

If you like gorgonzola, you'll like it, probably. The service was really fast and the food came out quickly but the waiter basically forced me to pick an entree on the spot/picked one for me (Him: *sees me on gnocchi page of menu* Gnocchi? With cheese? Me: Uhh.....sure!") and did the same sort of thing with my dad. This worked out alright for us, but just be aware, you may need to be assertive. The host was fairly gruff on approach, announcing he had a table for two but that we could only sit for 90 minutes. Fast eaters that we are, my friend and I quickly assumed him that would be fine. We each ordered a limoncello spritz and asked for 'table water,' but he said we could only order a bottle (which we did). The spritz was adequate, but the food was the true star here. My friend (who normally has only a small appetite) finished her lasagna, saying it was delicious. I ordered the Pasta aglio & olio, a simple pasta with olive oil, herbs and tomatoes. I ate past satiety (something I try not to do), because it was so good. The pasta was the perfect al dente and the grape tomatoes were delicious. Our meals did not come with any kind of bread, so that likely would have to be ordered separately. Also, silverware appeared to be stored in a canister on the table and our waiter did not seem aware that it lacked adequate forks for both my meal and my friend's. We were a solid 5 minutes into our meal and could not capture his attention. Finally one of us walked up to the middle of the restaurant to ask for a fork....interesting given their focus on limiting our time holding the table. I did appreciate the proximity of the restaurant, which was right next to a Christmas market. The inside was fairly basic, but clean.
