You can start with Lincoln's childhood in an Indiana log cabin, through his early law career, to becoming President and his unfortunate death. The docents/volunteers are excellent, everyone that we talked to was warm, informed and clearly enjoyed their time with us patrons. The day we were there two musicians were playing period music. They were very good, and while it did get a little personally annoying, it did really put you in time and place for the subjects. Both of the relatively short theater presentations are worthwhile, so plan accordingly so you can watch both. There was one display depicting the slavery auction block. It is a gut punch to anyone with a human heart, regardless of your outer wrapping.

I originally rented the Penske moving truck in Aurora in order to clean out a storage locker,…read morebrought it back to Mattoon where we were living. We were in the process of closing on a home and loaded up the truck. Our new home was in Decatur so when the loan officer called to say the closing had been delayed, I was at a loss. We had no idea when we'd close plus the Penske truck was already loaded up. I called both the district office and the returning place for the truck which is Chevrolet Hall of Fame, and they understood it was out of my hands and worked with me until I was able to return it after a delayed closing. Brad at Chevy Hall of Fame truly went above and beyond. If we need to rent a truck for any reason, it'll be from here.

There's a museum which talks about the time/place when Thomas Lincoln lived here - takes about 45 minutes. There are groups where it is set up with buildings and farm animals of the Thomas' Lincoln's time. His grave is just down the road. A key part compares two farmers of the time period. One is a farmer from the area that was interested in farming for profit with the latest technology and Thomas Lincoln, who farmed for the purpose of being a self-sufficient farm owner. There is an example of the homes of each type of farmer. We went in March; apparently there are tours during the summer. Ours was self-guided.

This place is free and you get to learn great history especially if you're not interested in driving out to Springfield. Staff here is absolutely friendly and knowledgeable. Museum was well staffed with security. Superbly clean. It took us a little over an hour to walk through the various rooms. Several of the rooms were empty, awaiting new exhibits. I'd probably come back again when the academic year is in full swing. My favorite part of this visit was the Blue and White Ceramics exhibit they have on display. There are many great pieces of art to see, though. Ellnora Krannert was extremely generous and numerous pieces in the museum are thanks to her. I wouldn't recommend this museum to children under 13-14, unless the kids/tweens/teens are really into art, art history, etc. I just think the little ones would be bored. You can visit KAM's online calendar to see if they ever offer children's programming. (Head to the Spurlock Museum if you're on campus with little ones instead.) Highly recommend KAM to anyone else. We're very fortunate to have an art museum of this caliber in our community. Summertime is the perfect opportunity to explore these locations on campus.
