In the library I'm always surprised how quickly our stack of Xpresses (Asheville's free, 'alternative' newspaper) disappears after it's put out. And people aren't taking em just to line pet cages, either. In fact, a lot of people read the Xpress (though they ARE likely to end up in cages after they're read). It's a great place to find out about local and regional politics, especially around election time. There are interesting horoscopes, and movie reviews, and the 'news of the weird' is perfect for those times in line at the grocer, or waiting for your honey at the cafe. Mtn X has fallen out of favor with me because their headlines set me up for different expectations than what their articles actually deliver in content. And if I simply rate their articles alone, I feel like I'm not getting much informational value 75% of the time. Oh well. Plus I was thrown off by the big ads they started putting on inside front and first pages. That was a jolt, and a big turn-off. read more

The Xpress is an Asheville staple. From local politics, to the News of the Weird to the calendar of events, it is the primo alternative sheet. It is the Hitchhiker's Guide to Asheville. When so much of our lives is invested in the online world, it's nice to actually pick up a tangible bit of press and find out where, what, when and why. When I go out to eat, the Xpress is oftentimes my placemat. I know it's rude to read and eat, but my friends and family know me too well to be disappointed. read more

The publication has gone through many changes in the last few years, particularly with its on-line version. In the past, they featured some solid articles from a progressive standpoint, with a significant amount of local and state political coverage. Regrettably, they now seem to shy away from politics, focusing more on local music, food and so forth. Their on-line readership has virtually abandoned the paper, with few comments compared to the past. They're getting sloppy too, frequently allowing misspelled words in text and headlines. Don't confuse today's fluff-filled publication with that which existed in the past. Somewhat like NPR, they've morphed into something safer and more boring, featuring little of the progressive, questioning stance taken in the past. read more
