Phoenix Cafe - GK's bête noire

See the photo of the Piazza D'Oro screen outside Phoenix Cafe?…read more I tethered GK, our JRT / Meerkat cross to this thing whilst Keeno and I waited for my chicken kebab and Keeno's orange juice. I had stopped in for a kebab earlier in the week because Tumut Golf Club couldn't feed us and I was about to drop dead from malnutrition. Great kebabs, really great kebabs and the next time I was in town I wanted another one so I could try the chilli sauce version. Proper Lebanese food in Tumut! A bloody miracle. I didn't see anyone using the hookahs in the front window but this is Tumut where the most exciting thing that happens all year is the 'Festival of the Falling Leaf' and the bi annual "Palindromic Towns" competition which Tumut always wins. Anyway GK fixed the lack of entertainment ...and how. Keeno's orange juice is finally brought out and the first thing she does is knocks it onto the ground where of course it virtually explodes in a shower of glass. GK thinks the end of the world has come and takes off. GK can really shift and, with a massive black monster following right behind her (she was towing the sign), she really stepped on the gas but as fast as she went her bête noire kept up with her. Keeno is now terrified she will run onto the road and wails a shriek of unmistakeable blind panic, and gives chase which only serves to spur GK on and bring out all the good Burghers of Tumut, and some of lesser value. So one of the spectators goes to stop GK from her attempt on the dog land speed record and so she runs between two parked cars which has the effect on the sign that a water skier experiences when the boat turns. Its called a whip, and now the sign is traveliing at warp speed straight for our own car. Someone, I didn't see who because I was reluctant to abandon my kebab, stopped her finally and Keeno was literally given an ovation by the townfolk of Tumut. One wiseacre told me that for $50 he would stay schtum about the ding on the car. I had to tell him it was mine. No, he didn't think that was funny...at all...much. Great kebabs, I'd steer clear of the orange juice though.

It has been years since my wife had been to Cabra; she had lived there in happier times with her parents. A lot has changed on top of the mountain. The town was decimated by fire and there wasn't much left that was familiar to Prue. A few photos from the lookout. A moment of reflection on the absent years. A quick toilet stop. A walk to a mystery memorial (grave?). A quick walk around the Community Hall precinct prior to our departure. Peering through windows at empty hallways. And, following a gentleman in through some doors that led to Bristo 1488. An order of 2 toasted chicken Ceasar sandwiches. 2 Bundaberg softdrinks. A pleasant conversation with a young guy behind the counter about out T-shirts (David Bowie, Ministry of Sound). And behold the sandwiches appeared before us. Wow. They were absolutely awesome! A side of chips to accompany. After a day of avoiding speeding oncoming Hiluxes in the middle of the road on blind bends and almost t-boning a motorcyclist and passenger who pulled out in front of us as we crossed the Tooma dam wall, the break was much needed.... and the food was without fault. We finished off with a conversation with the young guy about his drive back to Jindabyne ("Jindy" as he called it), wished him well and began our drive back to Tumbarumba, satisfied with the meal and the pleasant experience at Bistro 1488 that punctuated our drive over the Snowy Mountains. Cheers, Chris and Prue from Tumba.

The food was great and totally amazing value. Truly, we would have expected to pay twice the amount we were charged, particularly considering the remoteness of location and lack of competition. We have not found anywhere near this reasonable in the entire Snowy Mountains region.
