Clean, scenic, peaceful with easy parking and great for all ages, we not only played on the zip lines and rope courses but also walked along the raised boardwalk along the ponds and checked out the community garden. We saw bat boxes and while we didn't wander the entire area, didn't spot bee hives or farm animals which I think would be awesome additions, particularly closer to the play environment so kids can learn even more about nature and animals. There is actually a school playground on top of the hill with monkey bars, slides, the usual. We started there and saw so many kids in this other playground at the bottom of the hill on this dome-like structure and wondered what it was. The 2 playgrounds are separate by a long fence so you have to go around it. And the swings were between the 2 playgrounds for some reason, isolated on its own. Once we got a close-up, we saw the inside of the structure was a series of paths allowing the kids to weave in-and-out and climbing different heights, and also includes a longer slide as one of the exits. More for older kids 5+ though as the younger ones will get lost in there. The bigger kids really liked exploring the different paths. And walking distance to Marine Gateway shops and Coco Tea if you want to grab a bbt/snack after the playground.

The playground equipment, which is due for an upgrade this year, was quite limited and only had two swings -- a regular swing and a bucket swing for toddlers. There were more swings in the playground at the school next door, but they were all regular swings and not suitable for younger kids, such as our niece who was two at the time. Luckily we didn't have to wait long for the one bucket swing to become free, and not many people came by while we were there, but a second toddler swing would be nice for busier days. You can find free parking by the residential area South of 7th Ave around Laurel St, and walk across the little park bridge which extends the park over the busy 6th Ave. Good variety of terrain for dogs to play - field, pond, waterfall, hills, woods, bushes... Friendly people and well-behaved dogs.

A wonderful place for a walk, there are many places to pause for a rest or to read a book, including a small seating area surrounded by colourful flowers. The development of this meandering park has an interesting history and impacted local politics at the time of the big debate surrounding its implementation. In 1886 the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was given 5300 acres in Vancouver by the Provincial Government in exchange for the development of the transcontinental railway stretching to Vancouver. By 1968, Marathon Realty, the development arm of the CPR, was poised to develop this swampy 40 acre site as one of Western Canada's largest shopping centres. This plan for a $20 million centre was immediately opposed by a local group, the Arbutus-Quilchena Homeowners' Association, which was specifically formed to fight Marathon's plans. Lawyer Jack Volrich, later Vancouver's Mayor, was the leading spokesperson for the group and attributed the controversy as the impetus for his political career. The development controversy lasted for four years and resulted in a much scaled down shopping centre, mixed housing and the dedication by the developer of parkland at a cost of $100,000 which was turned over to the Park Board in 1977.
