And I know this is small but the place was virtually empty and they made a big deal about my wife and I sitting at a 4 top so we could both look out the open doors and sit next to each other. They asked us to move to a two top when they told us to sit anywhere... in an empty place. I've had better sushi and service. Find another location worth your visit to NYC. read more

Came here randomly after church one day. The menu had a lot of interesting things to try- the soft shell crab was really good. For my dinner, I had the sushi sandwich. I was really curious to see what that was like! I really enjoyed it, I think this restaurant has a lot of different things and interesting takes on sushi. Had the chirashi lunch special (take out) today. My coworkers order either from here or 1 other nearby sushi place for lunch, so I was eager to try this one. Fish was good and fresh, although I had 1 piece of maguro which was questionably slimy/mushy. The salad that came with my lunch was a mix of browned lettuces, a halved cherry tomato, and some shredded carrots and cucumber, with a nice ginger carrot dressing. What's with the browned lettuce? Unfortunately this is what's keeping me from giving more than 3 stars - not a bad experience, but nothing great (and far from stellar). My friend and I came here randomly on a Thursday night. I ordered the Rose Roll (shrimp tempura with spicy tuna on top) and Mott Roll (eel and avocado inside with spicy white tuna outside). Both tasted ok, I felt that the sushi wasn't anything special. The staff were all really nice, but beware because they ask you if you want salad or soup with your meal and we thought it came with our sushi. I have been to a few sushi places and when they ask, usually it free. However at this restaurant they charged us for the soup. We spoke to our server and they took it off our bill. Stopped in with my girlfriend around six on a Wednesday evening before going to see a movie at the Angelika. The place was dead empty when we arrived and completely without ambience, but this was compensated for by prompt and attentive service, although our server did start to forget us a bit once a few more guests had arrived. The rolled hand cloths he brought us when we were seated would have been a nice gesture had they been more than lukewarm -- make sure your 'hot' towels are hot, Mottsu! We both decided on the $15 Twilight Dinner special, which came with choice of miso soup or salad, an appetizer of the day (in our case, a passable tuna tartare), choice of entreé (the usual suspects, chicken or salmon teriyaki, sashimi, or sushi), and a cup of vanilla, red bean, or green tea ice cream for dessert. Portions were an acceptable size and quality was above average at the special price, but I'm not convinced it would be a good deal at normal prices. Located on Mott (hence the name) just south of Houston. This was the one thing missing from Soho for many years. Good, solid sushi. Well, Mottsu is your answer. Nothing overly fancy. Clean, simple and fresh. And the only sushi place I can think of in the area. We were rushing to the theater and wanted sushi badly. Unfortunately, there aren't too many sushi places right around the Angelika...except this was right there! We were seated promptly and ordered (for two people, one famished with hunger (me)): - saki - really good, they have a wide selection - pork gyoza - 6 pieces - meh, not great, very average, but I was in desperate need - 1 seaweed salad each - it was classic seaweed with a bit of lettuce too and thin slices of cucumber - I liked the presentation, not thrilled about the amount of seaweed/sesame sauce on the bottom of the plate, but okay nonetheless - tuna roll - 6 pieces, standard - Houston roll - 6 huge pieces of a ton of fish wrapped in rice and light tempura batter, served on plate with nice spicy mayo sauce. I liked that I had control over how much of the sauce I wanted, and the batter was very light, not super heavy. Big point on this roll - Eel & Avocado roll - 6 pieces - meh, straight forward, nothing to see here people - Sushi & sashimi combo - 8 sashimi, 5 sushi. Fish tasted fresh, I enjoyed how they cut up the salmon, and they include two interesting types of fish that I normally don't see in these standard types of combo plates, so big points on trying to stand out a bit. Needless to say, we were stuffed. I know people reviewed saying the price is reasonable, and I guess for that part of the city it is, but a few blocks north in the EV you can get very similar dishes for 20-30% cheaper. Maybe you need to stick to the specials to get the best deals, but we wanted to explore. All in all, I wouldn't go out of my way for this place, but if you're in the area, craving sushi, definitely make the trip here. I'm glad I know this exists there, and next time I'm around, I'll be sure to go back. read more

I've eaten at Mottsu a couple of times,and have been consistently happy with their quality of seafood! The sushi's always fresh, divinely fresh, really.
