The glow on these things! I thought they were backlit but they're not

Somehow this was my first comics convention. Less surprising, it was also my maiden voyage to Novi's Suburban Collection Showplace. (That's seriously the best name they could come up with? Yech! I'd rather have some corporate name followed by Showplace!) Since everything was all new to me, all the cosplay, all the content creators with tables selling their wares and holding court about them, the copious fanart for sale and the deep archives from various shops sometimes for pretty decent discounts, I'm probably going to grade this event more leniently than I would... ...Cause, uh, Motor City ComicCon seemed very poorly organized. Not nearly enough signs heading to or at the front of the building, or at the beginnings of the dual sets of amusement park style switchbacks where a lengthy wait ensued just to get a wristband after I already had a ticket I purchased. I understand there was seperate VIP and autograph admissions but really a GA only line would've moved much quicker. I erred in not getting some grub beforehand, as I wanted to take advantage of limited hours here on a Sunday. Well, it was cool to see cosplayers strolling by, but it doesn't make much difference if you're at a comic con or not, when you have to wait in a line this long. Not to mention my pizza was lousy and lukewarm. Clearly, the concession stands were overwhelmed. Maybe they could get some food trucks just outside the doors in the lot. You know, since I had a wristband to get back in that I really didn't seem to need anyway? Parts of the sprawling convention floor seemed very narrow and absolutely clogged with crowds. Other areas had plenty of elbow room. To be fair, some of these areas were in the autograph aisles which had a few empty tables on Sunday and might have been more hopping on Friday and Saturday. Sad to say, the aisles with the self-publishers probably could have been narrowed up some to make other areas better navigable. The place could definitely have been laid out better. It was cool to see so much geeky fandom and most people were very friendly, gratefully obliging to have their pictures taken when in costume. One young woman was dressed as Raven, sitting in the empty line that was supposed to be for Felicia Day, only Felicia Day wasn't there. There Raven sat on the floor, amongst litter, dejectedly munching on a giant soft pretzel. I went to take a candid, cause I dug the whole mood, but she noticed me and sprung up. She asked if I wanted a photo and I couldn't rightly tell her I wanted her all sad sitting on the floor and that moment was gone anyway. So I got a nice posed pic and it perked her right up. She even found it on my Instagram later and thanked me for sharing it! Big Thorbowski was abiding, Pickle Rick, Spider-Man, some funny character from the Muppet Show whose name I still can't remember, Rogue, some Stormtroopers, all kinds of cosplayers. I bought a bunch of comics and one art print, spending too much money but enjoying it. I haven't read any of the independent comics yet, but the people behind them were only too happy to talk about them and autograph them. No offense to John Cleese, but better than shelling out a pile of ducats for his John Hancock, nudge, nudge, know what I mean? Say no more! (Yes, I know that's actually Eric Idle if there's hardcore Monty Python nerds reading.) There was some good deals, though maybe not enough to make up for $30 GA plus gas, but hey, the ambience, right? There was this big hardcover Hawkeye collection listed at $100, but in a half off box. There were several copies and one had pages there were really warped, bending back and forth like a damn accordion. I went looking to make a deal and got the guy to say $40. I made a face and re-emphasized that copy's shoddiness. He was like "Well, what would you pay? " and I offered $25 to which he immediately accepted. I was like damn, I should have said $20, but it was fun to haggle and as I don't care about the book as a collectible I got a lot of material to take in for 75% off. I also ran into an old friend from my New Horizons Book Shop days and had a pretty decent conversation. All in all, a pretty fun day, but don't go on an empty stomach and be patient with crowds and lines.

I've been to Motor City Comic Con a few years now and it's always a blast. Awesome people watching, excellent art work, cool comic shops carrying their collectibles and wares, and some surprisingly excellent media guests. Sure, most of them are stars from shows gone by but every year there are a few really cool folks that I get excited to see. This year I was pumped that Peter Tork from the Monkees was there as I've been a HUGE Monkees fan since I was a little kid. You have to pay to get autographs or photos with most of the media guests but I totally ponied up to get a fab photo with Mr. Tork! There's also usually someone for Star Trek and Star Wars aficionados to get excited about. Last year it was Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) from Star Wars and George Takai and Brent Spiner (Data) from Star Trek. This year it was Billy Dee Williams from SW and Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) from ST. Pretty bad ass, I have to say. Also I know a ton of people who were really pumped that Traci Lords was there this year! I heard she was a doll! Not to mention, Dot Com from 30 Rock was tabling next to the Yelp table this year and he was super super nice! I also love that they commit to bringing in local artists. I have friends that sell her every year and they have a great time and reach a wide audience of locals and visitors alike. Plus--THE COSTUMES! People are really creative and get all decked out for Comic Con so get ready to have your mind blown! My only complaint this year is that I didn't have more time to explore since I had a lot of other events going on. But next year I'm clearing my calendar. It's definitely a place you want to spend a full day!

People of all ages, sexual orientation, color, and beliefs...HEAR ME! I come to you as a simple man, but a man who has walked through the fire of ingenuity and creativity. Yes, I come to you from the holiest of holy's, The Motor City Comic Con. Growing up in a fairly strict Roman-Catholic, Italian family, I was rarely exposed to anything outside of our cultural norm. Lots of Christ, pasta, and dark skinned Italian people. I will never get tired of those things; but, as I've grown older, I relish any time I get to meet new people with different experiences and upbringings, which is probably why I've recently gotten into the radio business. Well, I'm here to tell you that the Motor City Comic Con is the place to come for that, and many other reasons. First off, the people watching is SPECTACULAR. Just check out my pictures for evidence. People, who just 10 years ago had very few outlets for their cosplay, love of comics and games, and anime, show up in droves to explore their niche culture. The celbs are getting better every year. Wrestlers, models, actors, both young and old, fill the halls. This year a ton of the Walking Dead cast will be in attendance, as will Chloe Bennett from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the young Carmen Bicondova from Fox's Gotham. Then you have fan favorites like Ralph Macchio, Lou Ferrigno and more. Tons of people to see, get pictures with, or even hear them discuss things in panel. Then there's the comics. Tons of vendors sell classic, hard to find issues, new issues, and obscure titles. There is so much to choose from. My only two gripes (which are small and insignificant in the grand scheme of the Con), are the food/beverage selection and the prices for pictures. Food wise, it'd be nice to have a wider selection of healthier choices, along with some 0 calorie drinks (preferably some energy drinks with 0 cals). The prices for pictures are just par for the course. The media guests are here to make money, and food and lodging costs money, as does transportation to and from the event, so I get it. Here's the thing, no matter what you're into - Spider-Man and all your other favorite comics, Star Wars, wrestling, paranormal stuff, cosplay, anime, or whatever else you can think of, the Motor City Comic Con has you covered. Located in the Suburban Showcase, parking is $10.00. We came here on a Friday night, and it closed at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $30 for adults on a Friday. The foot traffic is incredibly low on a Friday so if you want to avoid the crowds this is definitely the day to come visit. There's possibly less dressed up characters and the celebrity guests are not here, but it's good if you want to just look at all the booths. This is a popular event for all ages, and kids really seem to enjoy it.

I'm reviewing this as a straight up Comic Con, not as an event in general. If billed as a Pop Culture convention, I'd give it four stars, but as a Comic Con, it doesn't focus enough on comics. For it being a Comic Con, the convention is 2/3 pop culture, TV, movie and video game related stuff. The strictly comic related things here are not enough, even in artist alley, many of the people are strictly artists and don't even work on comics. You expect a bit of that at any show, but this show as it has gotten bigger, has focused less and less on comics. Crowds have been larger and larger the last few years, and the experience of the convention is fantastic. But it's not a "comic con" in the strictest sense. In recent years there have been a lot of issues with crowd control and lines, that was much better with the 2015 show and hopefully will continue to get better in the future. I always enjoy the show, but I can't call it great if it is billed as a "Comic Con."

Comic-Con, well lots of fun, you will definitely see some interesting sites, tons of comic books and lots of cool swag, take plenty of money cus your gonna want to buy something, and if you find that one cool item you've been searching for you want to have the cash to do it. You can spend hours here, looking around getting signatures and meeting people, don't forget the costume contest that was lot's of fun and they go all out. If you've never been and your into it your gonna want to spend all day.

The shuttle dropped us off right at the end so we could start from the side (there are many vendors). It was right by the fire station. It was very hot walking through but we did find a market that was perfectly air conditioned to cool down in! We bought a refreshing Acai bowl at Wander Bowls Acai, a cookie from Chocolate Chipped Bakery (SO good and they give you a coupon for a free cookie at their farmington location), and a birthday card from the store Vitrine (also nicely air conditioned and has the cutest things)!! We saw the blue fountain, chalk art, music performer, the jurassic park dinosaur, etc. Overall, the vendors are great but it was a crazy hot day and so we didn't have enough energy to walk the whole thing. Loved what we did get to see and I think it is worth attending!

Even though I am giving the fair two stars I want to preface the review with the fact that we had a…read moreblast here and stayed for hours having the best time. But my review is not only based on the good times we had but the fact that the State Fair used to be something very different than it is now, and compared to other states' fairs, this is not the best of the best out there. It is conveniently located in Novi for those who live in the area at a hotel. So I basically parked for free in the hotel parking lot. That was great, very convenient, but it did not give epic State Fair feels. This is also at the same place at Comic Con. For Comic Con, this is a great spot but as a pavillion for the entire state, it is pretty sad. You walk into the conference area of the hotel and get tickets. We only spent $10 a person plus free parking, not bad at all. But then you walk through the doors at you are at the fair where the comic booths usually are. It is so small, like the tiniest art fair ever. Mostly local vendors selling stuff, but not enough and not enough variety. Kind of like Comic Con, my child did find some cool anime stuff to buy but it was so sparse. They had a "Cool Zoo" trying to sell exotic animals cooped up in tiny cages looking sad or selling $10 and up hugs, but were a bit deceitful, as they asked my child to touch and hold the animals but did not indicate it was for pay. Meanwhile, the livestock are thrust in the same space as the vendors in the teeniest of spaces. We enjoyed seeing the animals and giving them free pats and pets with permission from their keepers, but when this was once in Detroit, they had their own separate area. Then tucked in the same space were the kiddie rides and a few food areas. The best was the all you can drink chocolate milk for a buck, worth it! Outside were a handful or rides, a few food trucks, the midway games, the concerts, and the circus. It was a tiny backyard behind the hotel, like a teensy parking lot of things to do. It was a lot of fun. We tried a couple stuffed pepperoni pizza rolls, a tiny taco, a mini mango lassi, listening to some good music under a tent, played some games, saw some clowns and tiny dogs driving a car. You can come here for hours and have fun. The downside, most of the food trucks charge about two dollars to use a credit card (not even a percent a flat fee) so I went through most of my cash here. The main problem is when I was a child the State Fair in Detroit was huge, an epic yearly event I looked forward to. They had multiple buildings for selling art, seeing animals, a very large variety of rides and games and even more interesting food. The food trucks were the same ones from all of the summer art fairs, nothing special. Just hot dogs, pizza, and funnel cakes. I even confirmed with my parents that the fair was really large on a nice size property. While it was more convenient for me to drive 20 minutes to the fair, I miss the Detroit location and do not understand what happened. It is a shame. But, as I mentioned, we did have so much fun. We did spent hours on end doing all of the activities, eating, shopping, seeing animals. When we went there were really small crowds, so we could do things multiple times. We had no problem with too many people. My kid really enjoyed it because this is the only state fair here. I would probably go again next year if they price is the same. But many of the other reviewers are correct and perhaps there is a better fair in Michigan to go to, or maybe just visit Michigan Adventure if you want some good food and rides. It costs a bit cheaper to go there for a Cedar Point type experience instead.

No Shrine Circus?? What happend? It cost $15.00 to see the Moto Cross. Not good, should be free…read morewith cost to the fair.

It's ten tickets for $20, but this year I noticed you may purchase individual tickets. I prefer this option! Tickets are $2 a piece, so most beers cost around $6 or three tickets. I got the Griffinclaw pumpkin beer. It was amazing! Very pumpkin forward with a nice spice aftertaste. Most of the mixed drinks are between three and four tickets, cheaper than most bars. I've even seen some for two tickets. The parking can be challenging. We were able to find a good spot and only paid $3.00. But I wonder if it gets more challenging in the evening hours. I bet this a fun time at night. This is a great event when paired with the Funky Ferndale fair. I look forward to next year.
