This could be a double review, but it won't be because I'm not giving the name of the first restaurant.
Last week friends took my wife and me out to dinner at a flashy up-scale restaurant which I will not name. I'll say only that it's one of those places where the wine list is longer than the menu, and there are no prices listed on the menu (if you have to ask, you can't afford it). I've read reviews of this restaurant here on Yelp. Most of them say the food is both inferior and overpriced, and I agree.
This restaurant, although pretentious and expensive, has an ordinary steak-and-potatoes American menu - which is another reason we didn't like it. My wife and I prefer ethnic food.
To get over the disappointment, we decided to go out to an ethnic restaurant the very next day, but to one we hadn't been to before. We chose Moti Mahal. Not because the Yelp reviews said the food at Moti was good, but because they either said the food was great, or they said it was awful. Nothing in between. We wondered why
I don't know the history of Moti Mahal - apparently it's changed owners (and chefs) at least twice - but I can definitely say the food right now is great. We've eaten at most of the Indian restaurants in the Metro Detroit area (including Windsor), and Moti is one of the best. Every dish we tried was excellent. Even standards, like chicken kurma, were just a little bit better than in other local Indian restaurants.
Other Yelp reviews also complained about Moti's slow and/or poor service. The service was excellent when we ate there, but that's because my wife and I were the only diners in the restaurant. Apparently people are staying away because Moti Mahal has acquired a bad reputation. I hope they find out what a great restaurant it's become before it's too late and the place closes, because we're already looking forward to our next visit. read more
