This is a good beginner's hike, although it can get a little difficult at times. The views at the top are spectacular.
Start at Praia Vermelha. The cable car for Pão de Açucar will be on your right, and a military building on your left. Walk toward the military building and you'll see a paved trail and a fence gate. From here, continue on the trail.
The pavement will go on all the way to a dead end, and this walk is relaxing and pretty. You'll see lots of micos (small lemur-like primates) and beautiful views of the Atlantic.
To do the actual hike you'll need to look for a series of log steps up the side of the hill. This will be on the left, maybe half a kilometer into the paved trail. This is the hike up Morro da Urca.
The trail isn't very well marked, but it is very well traveled. So keep following the footprints and pounded dirt and you'll make it all the way to the top, which will be crowded with tourists who took the cable car. You can buy something to eat or drink (or a beer) up top, and use the restroom. This area has been renovated so you could even buy expensive jewelry if you want (though I don't know why you would).
If you come to a fork in the trail on the way up, go left. It might not make sense now, but you'll see.
Be careful for slippery rocks, steep soft soil, and DO NOT BEGIN THIS HIKE UNLESS YOU WILL FINISH BEFORE SUNSET. You do not want to be caught here in the dark. read more
