Local Take: The first of the "Mondays in the Park" series started here, as well as, our first park…read morebased SLO Public Health Mobile Vaccine Clinic. The Parks department also help arrange alot & they helped with logistics, chairs, music, & invited a whole bunch of Food Trucks [Baguette About It; Cubanisimo, & Plant Ivy]. The event was quite a success from the Food Truck & fun point of view. Both kids & adults had a good time. The trucks had long lines & sold out of most things after awhile. There were some performances, dancing, & music. The park itself is really close to downtown SLO, but unless you know exactly where it is, you can easily confuse it with another nearby park that is a few blocks more toward Cuesta Grade. This park is more suited to Food Trucks being inside, but the parking around here is not so great. Our Vaccine event was more informative & it was to test the waters in a park setting. We did have a bunch of people stop by for information & did one shot, but oddly enough I had more requests for a free beer or Vodka. It seemed that the majority of the people here mostly had their vaccines done already, but it was nice to chat. Since we just finished the second "Monday in the Parks" event in DeVaul Park, which was less packed with a much better turn out for vaccines, this series in these challenging times, seems to be a hit. While there are two more events like this, in two other SLO City Parks, it is probable that if these continue to be a success, it might become a regular thing. People seem to love the Food Trucks, the fun, & do appreciate the health promotion/ disease prevention aspect as well. Of course, we also enjoy these events as we also work. It is a pleasure for us, especially the Medical Reserve Corp Volunteers, to help our neighbors & our community, in these community settings. Every shot that we do can potential save many lives by slowing down, or even stopping an outbreak...especially with the most recent finding that any one Delta case can spread to 8-9 other people. This is now a very transmissible virus that rivals Chickenpox and even exceeds the transmissibility of several other serious infectious diseases including the now extinct Smallpox. Evolution can be amazing, but can also be very deadly when it works against a species. Over the past months were have done dozens of Mobile Clinics in almost all towns & cities in SLO county. We have had Mobile or Pop-up clinics in a wide range of venues, both inside & out. They include Parks, Community Centers, Churches, Schools, Food Banks/Pantries, Low Income Housing Areas, Farmers Markets, Swap Meet, Workplaces, and more. If anyone wants to propose a place for us to do a Pop-up, we are all ears. If anyone wants to get a vaccine [either Pfizer or J&J] please look for either one of our future Mobile Clinic sites, or head to one of 3 SLOPHDs [Grover, SLO, or Paso]. While it is harder to find, some Pharmacies may have Pfizer, but we definitely do. J&J is used for those who prefer a one shot deal. Things are getting more serious as the C-19 Delta spreads & testing is ramping up again....as well as cases. The completed vaccine rate in SLO County is not the best by far, but we are trying our very best to increase awareness & accessibility for everyone. Please get vaccinated if not already & please kindly encourage those who are resistant to please come out to at least chat with us. We keep up with the latest information and can help address people's concerns as well as help correct misinformation or myths. It is great that the Parks Dept. as well as other groups help support us in these community outreach projects. While it may seem odd to get a vaccine in a park, it is hard to think of a safer more pleasant way to get one. People seem to feel much less anxious in this non-clinical environment. Thank you!

To celebrate Bastille Day, the French group again chose Emerson Park in San Luis Obispo. There are…read morelush shade trees lining one side of the park and abundant grass beneath them, perfect for a "Dejeuner sur L'Herbe," or luncheon on the grass, inspired by the French Impressionist painter, Manet. We were immediately welcomed by the host and hostess of our group, who had thoughtfully provided the tables and an umbrella. It is a bit hard to park nearby, but we all managed to ensconce our vehicles and find a place close enough to carry our picnic things. There was a long table with a tantalizing spread of French baquettes, cheeses, sausage, salad Nicoise, berries and an onion tarte. The deserts were almost a buffet in themselves, with Palmiers, cupcakes, an almond tart, Madeleines, tea bread, and a Tarte Tatin. A cooler offered iced beverages. We circled our chairs in the shade and enjoyed this tranquil space in the middle of San Luis Obispo, while our host enlightened us as to the history of Bastille Day. It is so enjoyable to share French culture with a group of people who are also interested! The park takes up an entire city block, and has play structures for children and a basketball court that was in use the day we were there. They also have two Petanque courts or lanes for bowling with bocce balls. We engaged in a spirited game after our lavish feast. If you venture online and explore the options for Emerson Park, there is a site sponsored by the city that asks for suggestions for improvements to the park. One of the many items includes parking and a public garden, as well as other ideas that would only make the park better.

I visited a…read morefew weeks ago, added this "new" entry to Yelp without any "credit" [was prompted for an immediate review & pics], and was Tardy with my Hardie review. Hardie Park is rather cute and has both a summer use adult pool, along with a tot pool. The fees are reasonable [one day= $2 a kid/ $5 an adult & season passes are a bargain] and the schedule is on the SLO County Park website...where you can also find the plethora of other SLO County Parks, Pools, Golf Courses, Lakes, Hikes, etc... The two Tennis courts are free, at least according to the people who were playing there. In front of the pool is a interesting sculpture dedicated to two local Indian tribes [see pics]. On the other side of the street, is a large well groomed grassy area, where there are ample playgrounds for tots. The county wisely used what appears to be ground-up tires/rubber for safety. There is a large covered picnic table area with a huge BBQ for groups. In the overhead structure, there are controls for lights & even an AC outlet. One likely needs to reserve and pay for use on the SLO County website. Just behind this is a lazy serene creek, which is pleasant. The banks are deceptively muddy and slippery, which I found out the hard way! I wanted a water/mud sample to test under my home microscope system. As my wife yelled at me not to go down that way, that was the way I went...only to regret it, as one sneaker got wet, as I slipped. It took me a bit to extract myself, as I ran nowhere fast. My wife joked that I looked like a mouse running on one of those wheels in their cage! Somehow, I did not fall. Later I had my wife grab me a water sample. Since the creek looked to be only about 6 inches deep, it would typically only be messy for an adult...unless you twisted an ankle or worse! Apparently, since I did not learn my lesson about creek banks, I repeated this stupidity, the very next day with AG Creek, where I also slipped & grabbed a huge Stinging Nettle branch with both hands. MUCHO-Ouch! In any case, if an old fool like me can mess up with creeks, you can imagine what a mess kids can get into. My New Balance sneakers were soaked with tons of mud, while I had a pair of waterproof boots in the trunk. I can be quite a moron! In any case, this is a rather pleasant "unknown" county park in SLO County, that also happens to be right next to a public library. You then can grab some eats from town, a book to read, and then watch your kid[s] use up some of their boundless energy, swimming. The surrounding town is quiet, has humble accommodations, and marginal eats...but it is a good base of operations for points north, south, or east. Both charming Cambria and Morro Bay/Baywood/Los Osos are just a few miles away, and are filled with lots to explore. Since a number of the SLO County Parks do have summer daily use pools, it is a great feature for kids. In our area, only a few health clubs have decent pools, and only an expensive one has a nice outdoor Olympic sized pool [e.g. Avila Club]. So if you have visiting relatives with kids, who are pestering you to swim, and you know that they can get hypothermia from the Ocean, then these parks may be a god send for some. While the SLO County Pools are spread out, it may give you a great excuse to sight see, as you check out the area. If you need a relatively safe sheltered beach, there are parts of Avila Beach that have little wave action, lots of sand for a stroll, but the water is still icy cold. Avila is the most kid friendly beach. Ironically, even though I made the first "business" addition to Yelp, someone else apparently beat me to the first review [a non-local brief review seemingly targeted to "beat me" to the obviously "coveted" "First-to-review" title]. It was rather annoying, after I took considerably more time to research, explore, & take many pictures of this cute park...but no matter... as a local with tons of time on my hands, one of my new hobbies is to check out the plethora of the many County or local Parks, Attractions, Farmers Markets, in SLO county & beyond. My additional beef with the multitudes of non-local "tourist" brief reviews, is that many either over-glorify, or overly-trash places, that they may visit once, and typically lack a comparative/historical local context. You cannot expect this rural area to compete with urban areas. While it is a relatively "wealthy" area, with pricey housing, most things have to be trucked in, from the ports of Long Beach, or from the SF Bay area. There are no major ports in this area, since the demise of this area's big oil rigs & refineries eons ago. Avila Pier had a railroad that once brought oil out to the port from SLO [Tank Farm] & was a polluting eyesore. The entire town of Avila was dug up to remove many feet of oil soaked sand decades ago!

Mitchell Park is a very choice venue in a number of ways. It's got plentiful parking all around…read moreit, it's well maintained, and it's a beautiful spot to stop off to enjoy a leisurely lunch. The definite downside is the fact that at times it's virtually overrun with homeless people; the fact that there's a liquor store only steps away probably doesn't help with that :-( That downside not withstanding, there's a nice playground here for the kids, so come and enjoy and you'll almost certain to think your time was well spent!

I have personally been accosted simply walking through the park during the day. But the biggest concern is the safety and well-being of kids. Just yesterday, my wife and I brought our 6-year-old granddaughter there. I knew it could be problematic, but we had 20 minutes to kill and were right there. At one point, my wife took my granddaughter into the women's restroom. Earlier, I had seen a man enter and then leave it. Inside, there was a completely naked woman washing herself in the sink. When my wife and granddaughter walked out, they nearly walked into a zombie-like tweaker near the bathroom door. Very disturbing.

A nice, clean, safe neighborhood park with a big playground for the kids and a huge amount of lawn…read morespace for soccer, frisbee, etc. Picnic tables are great for bringing lunch and eating outside while enjoying beautiful views of Bishop Peak nearby. It's also a 15-minute walk to the base of the peak, if you're looking for a good area to get in a run/hike. Restaurants (Pita Pit, G Brothers, Chile Peppers, etc.) and Albertson's are nearby on Foothill, making this a great place to have an easy BBQ. Next time I'm looking to get a good run in, I'll be back.

I've come here a few times since it opened and each time I leave quicker than the time before. The…read moredesign of this park follows a common trend seen in a lot of post 2010 california skatepark; it's very pretty to look at and has a big "wow" factor but it's layout just isn't fun for the average skater. The street plaza has your typical linear flow but it really only works in the downhill direction. If you want to hit anything coming back the other way, you've gotta push like hell to have any speed. There's no basic flatbars or ledges under a foot tall where a new skater could learn new tricks. I just can't wrap my head around skatepark designers that don't bother to put in a small ledge and rail....these features would get used 20x more than any other feature in this park. Terrible oversight but it's what you see all over the place. The best park of the park is the middle bowl. It's actually designed to flow pretty well. The addition of the mini ramp in the shallow end is a bummer as always for anyone who actually likes to draw lines through the whole bowl. Unless it's empty you'll probably have someone doing rock to fakies in the mini so you can forget about carrying speed through the shallow end. The oververt wave is, again, pretty to look at and great for a newpaper covershot but purely a waste of resources. The big capsule bowl is BIG, really big. Again, great for pro demos or kids who are trying to qualify for the 2024 olympics but pretty much unskatable for 95% of people who use this park. It has been empty the whole time I've been here every time. The other tiny bowl in the back is just deadly. I know they were going for more of a backyard pool feel with this one but it just isn't fun. This is where they should've put a mini ramp/bowl for new skaters to learn on. My plea to all skatepark designers is this: do an actual study of who is going to come here from your local community, evalute the full range of skill levels and what types of skaters they are, then build the park for THEM! Don't build it to look good in an a Tribune article! Don't build it as an Olympic training facility! Build it to be enjoyed by the skaters in your community! Simple, right?

Cute park nestled in a cute neighborhood! This park is typically busy with people barbecuing, kids…read moreplaying,bicyclist meeting up, tennis players and dog walkers. No sand, just bark, which I enjoy. One large play structure and a smaller play structure for younger kids. Also, baby and regular swings. The park itself is not shaded, so during the rare hot days we have it does tend to get pretty hot. There are shaded areas near the park though. Bathrooms are also available and lots of grassy areas to run free on. One of my kids favorite parks for sure.

A surprisingly large neighborhood park hidden away in the Arbors near Marigold Shopping Center…read more The play structure is off limits right now and people need to practice Social Distancing to avoid spreading the Corona VIrus, but this was a bright happy active place on Saturday afternoon. The park has an uphill slope, with a baseball diamond on the lower field surrounding it. If you go up the hill, there are a play structure, a tennis court, and restrooms. No one was on the play structure, which had a warning sign and was closed. There is also a fairly large area to BBQ and have a picnic. People were leaving space for others, and enjoying the beautiful sunny atmosphere in this hidden green gem of a park.
