Absolute worst attorney a person could hire. He's abusive (yelled and cursed at me within the…read morefirst few weeks of me hiring him) and takes your money, only to do absolutely nothing. His lack of attention to my case had significant negative consequences to me and my kids. I handed him everything on a silver platter and he completely dropped the ball and refused to communicate. Little did I know when I hired him, but he had just had a public reprimand and then a month later was at trial for his own State Bar suspension. Due to my grievance (consistent with complaints of other former clients of his) with the State Bar regarding this attorney, the State Bar has taken him to court. He is not responding to the discovery requests of the State Bar and has gone completely MIA in his own case! If he won't attempt to save his own law license, what does that tell you about his interest in protecting you? The State Bar filed a Motion to Compel on 3/6/26 and the court has yet to act on it. Meanwhile, he is still licensed to practice law with the potential to harm more people.

Bret Doyal Fought for Me When No One Else Would - Austin, TX…read more If you're facing a tough divorce or custody battle in the Austin area, hire Bret Doyal. I was in an incredibly painful situation: for 27 months, my ex-wife kept my son from me all because of a one-sided temporary order she used to block any real contact. During that entire time, I only got to see my child once, for just 10 minutes. It was emotionally devastating and completely unfair. From day one, Mr. Doyal took my case seriously. He truly listened, understood what I was going through, and gave me hope when I had almost none left. He is not just knowledgeable about family law. He's strategic, calm under pressure, and knows how to present a case in a way the court cannot ignore. He worked tirelessly to challenge the order and expose the reality of the situation. His courtroom presence is strong, composed, and professional, exactly what I needed standing next to me in front of a judge. Bret will not respond to your messages/texts/calls at times because he knows what he is doing and just coz you researched something OR a friend told you stuff, mate, that does not make you smart. This kinda frustrated me LOL but dude this is a BAD LAWYER! Just be patient. RELAX! His closing remarks were breathtaking and articulate! I wept! Because of his dedication, we won. I now have my relationship with my son back, something I feared I might never get again. If you're in Austin, Texas and need a family law attorney who will fight for you like it's personal, Bret Doyal is the one. I'll always be grateful for what he did for me and my child. Isaac O.

There's a reason Sam is the #1 result when I searched for a divorce lawyer on Yelp…read more I went to Sam after my (not quite) ex-husband had been procrastinating filing our divorce for far longer than I'm willing to admit. I left him a message and he called me back the same day, even after business hours. We discussed my situation and he asked all the right questions to keep the conversation informative and efficient. He was very honest that I was almost finished and that I could very easily have finished everything myself. I appreciated his honesty (and he wasn't pushy about it) and felt even more sure of hiring him. He was able to schedule to meet me first thing the next day. In his office, we went over everything again once more for clarity. He reiterated that the process was already almost complete and I could have easily completed it on my own without him (just to make sure he was being very transparent), but to me it was worth hiring him just to make it not my problem anymore. We filled out a few pieces of paper and then I was on my way. Sam was able to get me into the courthouse the following Monday (rushing there on his own electric scooter). I went from hiring him on Wednesday evening to having a finalized divorce Monday morning. His empathy, sense of urgency, professionalism, and responsiveness made me wish I had hired him a year ago instead of waiting on my lazy ex-husband. If you're in the market for a divorce lawyer, you can't do better than Sam.

If you want to know the entire scoop from the questions she did not ask the apposing party, to the opening when she did not make clear to the judge the apposing party flat out lied or what she wouldn't do for me because it was not her job, email me and I'll explain everything at Thewestwood5308@gmail.com I honestly felt like I was in charge of my case, not her. I paid a 4K flat fee, I gave her a case with all documents handed to her, it was open and shut, she did not impress me. If you need a really good attorney look elsewhere. If you want an average attorney she could be for you. One more thing, she asks the same questions over that have already been asked by the other party, she does not make points sharp enough, they are so round, I am telling you I would not be surprised if the only reason she is in family law is because she would never get a case in criminal courts. She displayed enough intuition to be a great paralegal, not an attorney. I felt she was working for the other side, sad but it's honestly how I felt.

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. If you would like a competent lawyer that has your best interest in mind, I…read morewould advise you to find someone else. I used Joe to file for a divorce and he did not review my marriage agreement (which I sent to him upon retaining him) until the opposing counsel brought it to his attention months later. There was a date error on this certificate which VASTLY changed my liabilities - from nearly 0 to my house, business, etc. He provided no legal advice and advised me to go along with whatever the opposing counsel suggested, even though it was not in my best interest . He would not answer a single question I asked him and would charge me $100+ for each one sentence email he would send to me that did not provide any guidance. He was extremely discouraging and did not suggest mediation. He merely suggested I give up and pay out 50%+ even though my situation was very unique and not clear-cut (a signed, informal marriage agreement with a date discrepancy). If I continued with Joe I would have given up an extra ~$500k in my divorce. In the end I paid $4500 for him to draft a boilerplate divorce petition and forward emails from the opposing attorney with no legal advice.

My experience with Walters Gilbreath and Jake Gilbreath was beyond extraordinarily disappointing…read moreand a total waste of time and money. They completely failed me and my children. Jake billed me more than $107,000 before I finally changed attorneys, and the results and level of representation I received did not come close to justifying half of those fees. Despite the stakes of my divorce and SAPCR proceedings, my deposition preparation consisted of a Zoom call lasting less than 40 minutes. I was not adequately prepared for significant areas of questioning that arose during the deposition. Jake also failed to adequately communicate how rapidly my legal fees were escalating. On May 8, 2026, I was informed for the first time that the firm claimed I owed an additional $48,177.34, after I had already paid $59,432.65. The lack of results was equally frustrating. Over approximately four months, Jake was not even able to successfully resolve the return of my personal possessions from my former spouse. I was paying an extraordinary amount of money while watching basic issues remain unresolved. Most concerning, I did not receive the strategic guidance, preparation, communication, and advocacy I expected from an attorney charging these rates. I hired Jake expecting an experienced family-law attorney who would protect my interests and provide clear direction during one of the most consequential legal matters of my life. That was not my experience. I eventually changed attorneys, but by then I had been billed more than $107,000 thousand dollars and was left not even making it to first base in the process. He couldn't even get my possesions back for me over a 3 month period. Completely useless. Based on my firsthand experience, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere before hiring Walters Gilbreath. Do not assume that an expensive attorney or firm's reputation guarantees effective representation. I wish I had.
