I received a letter from my state this year saying I owed nearly $500 because I was given too much back last year. I went into the location who did my taxes, handed the gal my letter, and she goes "Oh yes, the Montana letter. We've been getting a lot of those. There was a flaw in our system." So, she admitted there was a flaw in their system that caused MANY people who have this issue. She had me sign a POA, said she would file a claim, and they would take care of it. I called back periodically to check in and finally, about three weeks later, she called me and said my claim went through and they would send a check. I called two weeks later, after I still hadn't received a check, and she tells me that it can take up to 6 weeks because it had to come from St Louis. Hmm. About two weeks after THAT she calls and tells me that the check was sent back. I verified my address and she send she would have it resent. Then I asked her if the state was going to charge me late fees since this was taking so long. She assured me that, no there would be no late fees. Cut to last Thursday, March 30th. The check FINALLY comes. Friday, March 31st I deposit it. I go online to pay the state and there is a $57 late fee. I call H&R Block and ask to speak to a manager because I was assured there would be no late fees and I have an issue with what has happened. She leaves a message for the manager. I call back later that day and get to speak to one and she tells me I needed to pay it up front and they reimburse me. Which is all well and good if someone had actually TOLD me that at the very beginning. I explain this to her and she tells me the lady who did my taxes has been there 25 years and she would have told me that. I pay my bills. I've rarely been late on anything. If someone had told me I needed to pay that $500, I would have contacted the state and set something up for me to pay it. I'm not one to leave my bills just hanging out, unpaid. Plus, when I spoke to the lady when she called and told me the check was returned, I specifically asked her if I would get late fees from the state. Which should have clued her in that I did not pay it and was waiting on the check from them to do so. The manager told me there was probably nothing they could do but would talk to her district manager and call me back. That was a week ago. Today I received a letter in the mail saying the state had sent me to collections the day I got the check from H&R. So I call her back to follow up and let her know that this has now affected my credit. She tells me I was supposed to be reimbursed. I tell her once again, I was never told that. My boyfriend was with me when I went in and if either of us had heard it needed to be paid upfront, we would have made sure it was paid. Then she tells me about how she was sent to collections once. Okay? She then goes on to tell me she will speak with her DM again and call me back. Then she calls me back a little while later and says "All we can do is give you a $60 off coupon for next year." After all that, I get a coupon. No apologies whatsoever. The $57 is menial to me. It's not some exorbitant amount of money. It's the principle, and the fact that I was sent to collections. If your employee messes up and it screws someone else over, you should make it right. Needless to say, I will not be using that coupon next year.

My personal impression is tha Patti Stanfill is that she is a horrible business person with zero customer service skills and NO ETHICS. It seemed to me that she charged more than was usual and customary for her services. I won't and don't recommend them.
