We went to watch the dueling pianos but had dinner first. resos on Open Table available but I wasn't sure if reserving the dinner automatically let us keep the table to watch the piano show later. I Had a hard time finding the correct phone number for the Ventura Crown hotel--ended up getting a guy in ?India representing all of the crown hotels and even he couldn't figure it out. Finally my wife found a local number and I had success making a reso--same table for dinner and the show. Showed up at 7pm-almost no one there, seated in a nice booth with view of the piano show. The place was crowded by 8:30pm (pianos started at 8pm). Service was attentive until the place got crowded and then it was hard to find our guy as he was spread so thin. The old fashion was excellent. Good wine list by the glass. The food: brussel sprout app--not overcooked but needed to be a bit singed; Also, cinnamon based sauce was weird--we prefer maple/bacon based. Pork chop was dry--good apples on top and the squash served with it was good. The clam/chorizo linguine was ok--interesting flavor but nothing spectacular. Prices were reasonable. We were staying at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and decided to go to Dueling Pianos and have dinner at the Moofish. The food was okay. We got the Moofish burger and the Cheese and Charcuterie, both of which were decent. My biggest food complaints are that the online menu doesn't match the actual menu in the cafe and they seem to have an inordinate obsession with Brussel sprouts. The service was acceptable, but we did have to go to the front to request our check despite having finished our food and drinks about 30 minutes prior. Maybe the server thought we were going to order more during the dueling pianos (although we did spend about 2 hours there). The entertainment (Dueling Pianos) was fun, however the sound system was a little strained at the volume they were using and created a lot of distortion. Also, if you attend dueling pianos be prepared to pay up if you want to make a request. Also, a word of caution to those with children, the lyrics weren't always kid appropriate. read more

After reading other reviews I'm going to assume our Thanksgiving dinner was an outlier, so don't put too much emphasis on this review: This was the first in over thirty years I didn't make Thanksgiving dinner. This year since it was just 'us' I decided to take the year off and go out! Not a lot of places open here in Ventura County, and I opted for the spread at the Crown Plaza Hotel on the beach. Let me start with the highlight. The first course had two choices a mixed green salad and this wonderful butternut squash soup. That had to be one of the best soups I've ever had. Thick very tasty, a nice and unexpected level of spice giving it a nice kick. With the sprinkling of pumpkin seeds on top and a few pomegranate seeds mixed in, it was perfect. And that's where the perfect ended. I ordered an Old-Fashioned cocktail. It's not a difficult drink to make. It was.... Not good, and they used one of those bright red maraschino cherries as opposed to the proper Luxor and I think it was just the bourbon and some simple sugar? Then the main course arrived. The turkey, the very center piece of the traditional meal, had that odd 'rubbery' texture reminiscent of a loaf, and not a hint of dark meat to go with. That was topped by a descent yet only a tablespoon or so of a mushroom gravy. The small ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes was dry and bland... no gravy. The charred brussels sprouts were indeed 'charred' in fact black. The table spoon or two of sweet potato mixture was ok, but at best uninspired. And the worst... the absolute worst part..... NO CRANBERRY SAUCE. The waitress apologized and said they ran out. Are you kidding me? My daughter, the vegetarian, had the optional butternut squash ravioli, which was only OK at best. The three of us had one of the three dessert offerings which were good. All in all, a major disappointment. At $65 a head I expected.... Well I don't know what I expected, but not this disappointment. The waitstaff was wonderful, and I tipped her well. It's not her fault, and it's a holiday, same with the parking valet. They are working a holiday and I appreciate that and even thanked everyone we came in contact with for working that day. I choose this place because when we've had out of town guests and taken them to surfers point and the pier we will stop and enjoy the outdoor patio for a drink and a nosh. I will likely continue this practice but a meal.... To quote the Raven, "Nevermore." read more

Wow, just so many things that could've been better. We visited for the weekend and have had just an absolute fantastic vacation all the way up until dinner at Moofish Cafe. I'll get straight to my list of things we felt were not satisfactory. - Dueling Pianos lady walks up to our table shortly before they went on and just dropped off a flyer with a QR code and didn't even say hi or explain how the QR code works or what to except. Other Dueling Piano performers, in other cities, have come up to our table and took time to talk with us about the process and experience so bringing our kids for the first time we were disappointed in this area. - Food was delivered in okay timing but all of our meals were meh. My Vegan burger tasted dry and bland, no dairy free cheese, their sauce selection for their burger were the typical BBQ trio of Mayo, Mustard, Ketchup so also nothing special here. My kids ended up asking for Ranch to give their burgers flavor and a few of us added salt to many of our food items. -Do not get the coffee here. We ordered 2 different coffee drinks and both tasted like something from a Gas station. - Water tasted like tap water and unfiltered. - We saw items on the Yelp Menu and were excited about some of them but when we got our Menus they were completely different. When we asked for items from the Yelp Menu but they said we changed our Menu and will need to order from the new Menus. Not cool. Just change the Yelp menu whenever you change the Menu. - I ate the only 2 options they had that were vegan or plant based and they were just okay. - My daughter requested a song that she was excited about and while one of the Dueling Piano girls were singing it the other performer female kept hating on it and making little remarks to the crowd encouraging them to pay more and they will sing better songs than this. I know she was trying to be funny but when my daughter heard that her attitude instantly changed. -Lastly, the dessert took forever. The good: Atmosphere was nice. Most of the staff was friendly. The servers are all very nice and try their best to make your dining experience pleasant. That's nearly all I can say that's nice about this restaurant. I recommend avoiding this place and visiting one is the many other restaurants on the boardwalk or in Downtown Ventura. Both entrees we ordered were unappetizing. The mashed potatoes were good! The chicken was slightly undercooked, the fish was frozen not fresh, the asparagus was served burnt, and the soda was so watered down it was pointless to drink. We will not return here. I took my wife and two sons to Ventura for a weekend getaway and we stayed at the Crown Plaza. The MooFish Cafe is connected, so it's an obvious choice to choose for food. Big mistake. We went for breakfast and ordered the French Toast for me, my wife, and my 7 year old. It was disgusting. It tasted like undercooked eggs, there was no flavor, the fruit was wack, and the maple syrup had this weird film on top of it in the little syrup boat. On top of that, the server didn't give us any straws for our drinks, any butter for wife's French toast, and he didn't check on us ONCE. I don't wanna make this a race thing, but fuck it. We DO live in America, and as a Black man, I know for a fact that in Ventura there's a handful of us out there. The table behind us were 4 Don't Tread On Me/Maga men (they literally had the Don't Tread On Me shirts on) who kept getting checked on and the best service they could find. My table on the other hand? Nope. I had to stop a guy that works in the back to get his attention, just to get my check and some service. Terrible. Don't go to this place. Especially if you look like me, and don't wanna waste a lot of money on shitty food. read more

Hidden gem. We have eaten here a few times now since the chef opened up MooFish. Had the Cioppino a few times now and my wife got the fresh fish selection. The food is always fresh and changes all the time based on what's fresh or in season. Not sure why this place isn't busier but needs to be found.
