El Monumento a la Patria (or Monument to the Homeland in English) is one of Merida's most recognizable landmarks and a must see if you're visiting Merida for the first time (as we were this past week)! The monument was crafted by the Mexican/Colombian sculptor Romulo Rozo and is located at the northmost point of Merida's iconic Paseo de Montejo. The construction of the monument began in 1945 and lasted 11 years! The monument is carved from stone and depicts scenes from Mexican history. There's a lot to see at this monument; it's full of incredible details (Mayan imagery, historical figures, Mexican mythology)! Definitely walk over and walk around it a few times with your camera at the ready. It's pretty incredible!

What a beautiful monument! I first saw this monument at night time, while taking a tour on a horse-drawn carriage. It sits along a major avenue in Merida, and it is lit in an impressive way. I personally think it looks a lot more impressive and dramatic at night time than during the day. That is not to say that it is anything small during daytime. If you look closely at this monument, you can see the carvings tell the story of Mexico. It is an artistic and cultural masterpiece.

A must see here in Merida! Try to get here early when they raise the flag and for photos! Not super crowded which I loved and dog friendly my dog was the perfect model!

A majestic eye-catching monument with Mayan writing on the wall situated in the center of a glorieta (or round-about), this structure showcases the names and crests of each state in Mexico. A famous tourist attraction, this monument is located on the clean and well maintained Paseo de Montejo. Plenty of restaurants, shoppes, and stores along the stretch and a nice way to end an evening or day strolling along the Paseo. Highly recommend visiting either during the day or at night. Both experiences are magnificent. A must see in Mérida. Pretty awesome! "The sight of such a monument is like continual and stationary music which one hears for one's good as one approaches it." - Madame de Stael

The Palacio de Gobierno is located on Merida's Plaza Grande, and I had heard it was worth a visit…read more It's true! The Palacio is a government building that houses some executive government offices and a tourist office. It was built in 1892, so the architecture is impressive. But that's not why you're there. You're there for the murals! So say buenos dias to the guards stationed out front and wander in. The large (and incredible!) murals on the main staircase and under the arcades of the inner courtyard were created between 1971 and 1974 by Fernando Castro Pacheco, a local artist and a student of Diego Rivera. Beginning in the staircase, the paintings tell the story of the ancient Maya, the Spanish conquest, the Mayan rebellion and Mexican independence, one after the other. In the "Salón de la Historia de Yucatán" upstairs, there are more large oil paintings by the artist dating from 1978, which offer a fascinating journey through the history of the Yucatán Peninsula. Free to visit, the Palacio is a must see when you're in Merida. Those murals are spectacular and are a great way to orient yourself in Yucatecan history at the beginning of a trip; I'm so glad we visited on our first day when we arrived last week!
